using the flickr API to find and map photos tagged with "scotland". (This isn't all of them, just about 18 months' worth, about 120k images). Used QGIS and the Natural Earth Cross-Blended Hypsometric Tint map, OS GB Projection. Looks more interesting at original size.

Interesting to see the cluster around Glencoe and Ben Nevis. And someone appears to have taken lots of shots on the ferry to Arran.

I will not be posting on Flickr over the holidays so I would like to wish my friends on Flickr a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year.

I am somewhat envious of my friends in Florida with all those migrants and nice warm weather for bird photography, but they cannot photograph this classic red cardinal against white snow. I nearly discarded this shot when I noticed the junco in the background, but then decided that the little snowbird actually improved the shot

Era 2002 y por aquellas fechas tenía previsto un viaje a Egipto.

Poseía una réflex analógica con la que había hecho miles de fotografías pero un viaje tan largo y con carretes, me decía que posiblemente no podría sacar todo lo que quisiera.

Me compre esta Nikon E2500 que aunque no era lo que yo quería, podía cubrir otras expectativas y la falta de carretes en algunas situaciones y experimentar el mundo digital.

Con ella hice cientos de fotografías en los lugares mas insospechados. En el Valle de los Reyes, estaba prohibido hacer fotos en los panteones y quien las hacía, le quitaban la cámara.

Gracias a una opción que posee, se puede hacer fotografías en casos extremos de poca iluminación, sin flash y sin llamar la atención.

Durante unos años fue mi arma secreta, disparé en museos, eventos, medios de comunicación y en la calle sin apenas darse cuenta nadie de ello.

Lo que mas me obligó a dejarla fue su poca capacidad de memoria y la pantalla tan pequeña que tenía. Si la volvieran hacer con pantallas actuales, no dudaría en comprarla de nuevo. Debo deciros que el objetivo giratorio Nikkor tiene una luminosidad espléndida.

Con la evolución de las cámaras, pronto salió la primera réflex digital y esta quedó postergada en un cajón hasta que con motivo de la compra de la tercera generación me puse ha enredar con ella y tomé esta instantánea para el recuerdo.

*i joined flickr on july 21, 2005. i set a goal of posting a picture a day - and i've only missed a day or two in over 3 and a half years! when my family went on a caribbean cruise last summer - i had to pay $125 on the cruise ship just so i could post very low res images to my flickr photostream! well - i didn't HAVE to, but i wanted to because i've been bitten by the flickr bug!

*flickr has undoubtedly made me a better photographer . the ritual of daily (or regularly) posting a picture forces improvement. it makes you really think about and consider your photography and inevitably raises your standards. i tell everyone who is interested in photography to start a flickr account and try to post every day. it's a wonderful habit to maintain.

*flickr has also been a constant source of artistic inspiration as i get to view some of the best photographs in the world from my talented contacts and flickr friends.

*to all my flickr contacts and friends - i appreciate you and your photography so much - please keep shooting and posting! i have learned so much from all of you and get daily doses of delight and wonder from viewing your photostreams and reading your comments.

(this image is a pair of intertwined plastic slinkies that i use with my 3rd grade struggling readers to teach them how to s - t - r - e - t - c - h out a word. today it struck me these are perfect flickr colors - flickr on the brain i guess ...i shot this with my little point and shoot canon powershot digital elph - which i have with me at all times - for those "just in case" moments :)

Apex Motocross practice track is a 1200m track including tabletops, step-ups, drop offs, whoops and a hill, to challenge the most expert motocross riders, while being safe enough for improvers. The whole circuit is roped and staked with tyres on posts. Chestnut paling fence encloses many areas for increased safety.

Visit Lochnagar Crater.

The Lochnagar mine was the largest of the 17 mines that exploded on 1 July.

Debris from the explosion rose some 4,000ft (1,200 metres) into the air.

•The mine was packed with 60,000lbs (27,216 kilograms) of ammonal in two charges 60ft (18 metres) apart and 52 feet (16 metres) below the surface.

•The tunnel was 1,030 feet (314M) long. The longest tunnel in chalk during the war.

•The explosions constituted what was then the loudest man-made sound in history

•The mine created a crater 300 feet (91 metres) across and 70 feet (21 metres) deep, including a lip 15 feet (4.6 metres) high.

•It obliterated between 300 (91 metres) and 400 feet (122 metres) of the German dug-outs which are thought to have been full of German troops,

•The mine was blown at 7.28 on the morning of 1 July.

•Cecil Lewis, then an officer in the Royal Flying Corps, witnessed the explosion of the mine from his aircraft high above La Boisselle and is quoted as saying:

"The whole earth heaved and flared, a tremendous and magnificent column rose up into the sky. There was an ear-splitting roar, drowning all the guns, flinging the machine sideways in the repercussing air. The earth column rose higher and higher to almost 4,000 feet." (1,220 metres)

•The sector was attacked by the 34th Division, a New Army Division consisting of Tyneside Irish Tyneside Scottish, Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Royal Scots, battalions.

•The Division lost 6,380 officers and men that day, and was the hardest-hit British division

•The Crater receives around 200,000 visitors a year and is thus one of the most visited sites on the Western Front.
