I recently acquired a new light painting torch, the famed lenser v24, and thought I might take it out for a test spin before a planned light painting session on the weekend. I must say that I am very impressed with the quality of light, and absolutely love the effect that this LED light wand creates.

My lenser orb needs some practice, but I was happy with it for a first attempt.

On a side note, I am sure it looks quite crazy to onlookers. :)

Saturday, February 13th, we tried our first run of a photo tour I call "Sunrise to Sunset". The day started and ended at the latitude of 41.xxx and offers two views of the same Great Lake: Lake Michigan. Along the way, we experienced clear skies to cloudy skies and freezing rain, which made the end of day all the more challenging. 18 hours, three locations, and great friends to share it with, made the experience priceless.

First Congregational Church, Marietta, Ohio, stands on Front Street, facing the Muskingum River near its confluence with the Ohio River, across Muskingum Park. This photo was taken June 7 during an enjoyable day with Flickr friends Pat Rodgers (WVJazzman) and Tim Hoeflich (thoeflich), our third get-together since May 2009, plus one with Pat in North Carolina two years ago.

This building dates from 1906, when it was built to replace a white-frame church on the same site that was dedicated in 1809 and destroyed by fire in 1905. Formed in 1796, the congregation is the oldest west of the Allegheny Mountains in continuous existence. The design is much the same as that of the earlier church, including the twin bell towers, but the current church has a brick veneer; the design was patterned after a church one of Marietta's founding fathers had attended in Boston, Massachusetts. Marietta, founded in 1788, was the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory and the first capital of Ohio. This church is part of the Marietta Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 (74001646).

This is one of the first shots I've (ever) taken with my new strobe kit. (3 Paul C Buff Einstein E640, cybersync system and a few modifiers). This was just a test shot in my house.

So, I used to be very intimidated by strobes and flash photography in general; that was until about a year ago. I found myself getting really frustrated with not being able to have control over light in a way I would like. I started exploring flash photography and I've been blown away by so many photographers.

I've spent a lot of time thinking, researching, learning about flash and trying to figure out if i wanted to take the plunge into using studio flashes. This is also apart of by bigger quest of trying to find my own artistic style. I am inspired by so many photographers of various styles I've really struggled with where i want to focus my own work.

My biggest debate when looking into flash photography was weather I should drop the kind of money required to buy a basic studio kit. I could have rented equipment to try before I bought but after looking what it would cost to rent a compete setup for a week I realized I could have already bought a single studio flash with that money. I also realized (rationalized) that if i decided it wasn't for me after a while i could sell all the equipment at close to what i paid for it (based on what i saw on ebay). With carefully consideration I finally made the plunge.

I've only taken a handful of photos so far but I already love it! I'm not sure why I was ever so afraid. I have a lot to learn yet but I'm sure it will come with experimentation. I'm going out later this evening to take more photos. I can't wait!

Lighting setup. Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. I was playing around a lot with back light and fill. I'm pretty sure this is a single strobe, camera left in medium softbox with a grid.

My first post using the brand spanking new 60D.

I didn't get quite the sharp detail I wanted, but he was pacing fast so I had to pick a spot and click as he strode by.

I wandered around the garden and the aquarium (figured there was no time like the present to learn how to catch a fish) and the zoo yesterday. Captured some nice flowers, a few River of Lights Christmas decorations and a very blurry shark....not all images are fit for Flickr consumption but I had a blast!
