Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Headphones
Artists and producers spend countless hours fine-tuning and mixing music to get it exactly how they want their fans to hear it. But the vast majority of headphones can’t accurately reproduce the intricacies produced in the studio. Simply put,Studios can. With precision-engineered, advanced speaker design, powered amplification, and powered noise cancellation, you hear music the way today’s top artists and producers want you to hear.

LaCie FireWire Speakers
LaCie FireWire Speakers take advantage of FireWire 400's inherent superiority as an audio connection. Conventional speakers attached to a headphone jack must contend with noise distortion from the circuitry within the computer. USB speakers vie for limited bandwidth and power, having to share the bus with the keyboard, mouse and other peripherals. And while other portable speaker manufacturers increase treble or bass to simulate better sound, LaCie FireWire Speakers rely on 8-watt minimum audio output for true sound fidelity. Sound can be tuned to individual preference within iTunes®, Winamp or whatever the user’s chosen audio/video application.

The art of connectivity... by ora-ïto : the wonderful LACIE huby®. Without a doubt the best looking hub on the market
When I was in junior high school in the late 80s, I had a Kodak Disk camera.
If it wasn't this model, it was very similar to it -- I remember the flip-down cover plate, the flash that would pop out to the side, and the bevelled shutter button. A cousin had the chrome version, but mine was black plastic like this.
At the time, it seemed very svelte and handy. In hindsight, it must have been both larger and heavier than, say, the original Firewire iPod models, the picture quality was never very good (but what the heck, I was 12 years old), and it was no fun being limited to 15 frames when other cameras then could do double that (nevermind how many images will fit today on a 2gb SD memory card, plus video too, and at much higher quality, and oh yeah no developing fees either).
I recently came across a pack of photos I took in the late 80s, and now that I have a scanner, I'll try to put some of the pictures up.
* ** *** ***** ******* ***********
This photo ran with Wired.com's GeekDad blog, July 22, 2009: 100 Things Your Kids May Never Know About.
I was cool with this at the time.
Then I realized that they're using the photo in house ads on all of Wired's articles.
The photo is clearly set with "some rights reserved", and if you click through to the Creative Commons license, it clearly says that I am not permitting commercial usage (like house ads) or derivative works (like slapping a Wired logo on it).
Surely Wired, of all people, should understand these things.
Apparently not though.
******
UPDATE: I promptly got an email & a call back from wired.com's Editor-in-chief, who was very reasonable about the whole thing. More to come, but it looks like this will have a fair resolution.
Looks pretty cool with that blue-ish backlit keyboard and short DOF. The blue hue on the backlighting comes from the fact that I set the camera's white balance to the much warmer tungsten lighting in the room. Hence the white light from the screen and keyboard have a strong cool/blue hue.
First upload from my new imac!
This has skipped to the front of my upload queue as all my existing photos are on my old imac and I have to wait till I get a firewire 800 to firewire 400 cable before I can transfer all of them across.
So this I got back from the lab today. Started using Tesco as Asda had been chewing too many of my films. So far, so good. And using an up to date iPhoto to upload to flickr. So a v. exciting day all in all...

I've always been pretty responsible about backing up my digital photos. But I've been doing it for long enough that I've started to get into the hassles of media obsolescence: it's now a pain if you ever want to retrieve anything from SCSI or IDE hard disks, FireWire peripherals, optical CD-Rs, etc.
I'm not sure we've ever had a digital media format which has managed to stick around as a mainstream product for more than 15 years or so. (Anyone remember Zip disks?)
The top strip of film is the oldest one I have found in my dad's file box, from 1938. Below it are some pictures I took last November.
We know this works. And it's not just the format of 35mm (and 120) film itself; I'm also still using my father's 50-year-old enlarger, beakers, safelights, etc.
[And by the way, if you're thinking "no worries; I have my photos backed up on Flickr!" you probably ought to go read some headlines about how Yahoo is doing lately.]
I'm saving the video via Firewire directly to the MacBook Pro using QuickTime Pro. Saves all that log and capture time later and also allows the client to preview the footage.

What's in a reporter's Bag?
TV News reporters carry backpacks. Some reporters even carry suitcases.
Ever wonder what's inside?
Here's mine.
This is not a typical bag. I carry way more gadgets than most reporters.

I decided I had to let go of some of my old Apple computers. I thought I would take a picture of them before the trip to the dump.
While planning for the picture, I realized that I could represent every major operating system version that Apple released for Macintosh. From a 128k Mac running System 1.0 to a G5 Tower running System 10.4.8.
I also realized that I could find representative applications for each system era.
While I was working with the vintage Macs, I learned that it can be very tricky doing what I had planned. I had hard drives fail after I got them setup, I had bad logic boards, bad floppy drives, bad CRTs. I had to solve networking issues and find a web page that would load on System 8 with Netscape 3. I had to find twenty five year old floppies with working System 1.0 and MacPaint. I had to track down every System disk I had stored around the house.
It is amazing that some of all of these computers still work. Computing has come a long way in the last twenty five years. Apple’s OS X has improved greatly since 2001.
I plan to turn some of the old PowerBooks in to live picture frames. I will post these projects when I complete them.
Finally a list of the equipment:
Note: Apple did not release a System 3 or 4. Check out this site for info.

:D Cant wait to shoot my final major project on it, the quality is amazing with its lens. Here I was just testing out the Firewire mode & making sure everything is working correctly
Internet, this is Nelly.
Nelly, this is the Internet.
The different design of the iMac, compared to my previous flat-screened, swivelly-necked little friend meant that alterations had to be made to my existing desk. Its dimensions fit me and everything else in the office so well, that buying a new desk wasn't really a game we wanted to play.
Dad raised the keyboard shelf a little so that it slides back over the foot of the iMac and replaced the top shelf with two custom shelves for the printer and external drive.
John came over last night to help set up the mirrored RAID set and now the whole thing is called Nelly. I transferred the contents of my old iMac via Firewire overnight and now all that remains is to grab a few things from my old 30GB external, which weren't on the iMac.
And then transfer the files from the graphite iMac to the G4 iMac for Mum.
Empty the 30GB drive for Dad to use
Do a fresh install on the graphite iMac for Suzy
and gradually get used to this new desk setup.
It is my home music player. The hard drive was loud and slow, so I removed the built-in hard drive and boot the iMac from an external 250GB firewire drive.
I'm doing some testing to interface my Nikon Super CoolScan 4000 ED - which has a FireWire 400 connection - to my newer iMac with USB 3.0.
Utilizing an "A1463 Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter" plugged into an "A1790 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2" I can connect the older scanner into my USB-C input and still use the scanner.
In fact, when connected, my iMac reports it is using a FireWire device, and has no issues at all with the kludged-together chain of adapters and cables.
Whatever works!
I needed something quick to post this morning as I am on my way in to work.
I had to go into the archives to post, we have been having trouble with our Nikon Coolscan 9000 at work which is what I do all my primary scanning on. True, we still have a Kodak HR500+ and an Epson V700, but I prefer the Nikon, as temperamental as it is.
Anyway, so out of the blue it started crashing the Nikon Scan software, for little apparent reason other than to be stubborn. I believe it was also a Monday.
To Nikon's credit their tech support has been working with us for a week reviewing our system summaries, suggesting new theories, listening to us explain their failures. It is amazing the variety of ways one can achieve the same result...
We have been suspicious that it was a hardware issue, and the scanner needed to go into Nikon for servicing. Nikon was convinced it was not.
So finally after having tried two different computers at work and three different firewire cards, including the original Nikon with NEC chip, I brought the scanner home and plugged it in here. Short story is, I finally got it working. Long story is.... ooops I run Vista 64 which Nikon never released drivers for, only 32 bit. So Nikon Scan won't recognize the scanner without the driver. Though I CAN download a free trial of Vuescan which strangely enough did have Vista 64 drivers and run that. Though unless I want to buy it, all my scans have dollar sign watermarks littered across them.
As I said, so many different ways of achieving the same result.
So now the scanner is going back to work, and the mystery will continue while we try to get the scanning computer and the scanner to kiss and make up and be old friends again.
I have a small series of these cloud images, and I was scanning one of them this morning. That one had dollar signs all over it, which was kind of interesting, but really not that much so. So I posted this one instead. We have had some great clouds lately.
