Need to Reset PMU? The iMac was a dramatic departure from mainstream computer design. The design of the first generation of the iMac has been credited to Jonathan Ive, currently Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple. It was the first computer to ship with out a floppy drive and was equip exclusively with USB port standard. The slot-loading iMac G3 began shipping in late 1999 with additional DV (Digital Video) designation. This version had FireWire, CD-RW/DVD-ROM, 500 Mhz Processor atop the new "Pangea" motherboard with a 16MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra graphics chip. The 2001 series was available in indigo, graphite, and snow with either the 500, 600, or 700MHz (PPC750CXe) processor.

Some of the tangle of power cords, adapters, USB cords, Firewire cables, speaker wires, power strips, USB hubs, Firewire hub, headphone cord, etc., under my computer table. I have since cleaned out and organized, but documented it for posterity. I look forward to my next computer which I expect to have much more in terms of wireless capability... : )

Better known as my desk.

So, after a bit of a hit and miss delivery issue with Home Delivery Network, my Drobo has arrived from Amazon. I currently have it configured with 3x 500GB 7200RPM server drives and 1x200GB 7200RPM drive that I had laying about. I will eventually sacrifice a bit of speed for some peace and quiet and get some eco-friendly 500RPM drives 4x 1TB, but for now the space is plenty.

I've relocated one of my 1TB Lacie drives to under the iMac for use as my Time Machine drive, so the Drobo will be for all my media files. So far I like it, it's kinda noisy when it is busy but the performance over FW800 is quick enough for my use. I also tested the data redundancy of the unit by removing one of the drives whilst playing a video file from it, and putting a brand new drive in - this worked fine and the within a few hours the array was back to optimal and my video never stopped playing. I have ordered a 5m FW800 cable so I can hide the unit away, it's just too noisy to have it right next to my iMac full time.

Early impressions good, full review to follow shortly. Check out my blog at jonhume.co.uk if you want to see more like this, or visit www.theultralinx.com for more reviews and tech posts.

The ports on my MacBook

My home office technology used for the NMC Symposium on Evolution of Communcation held entirely in Second Life.

The PC on the left, a high-end HP m8100y Core 2 Quad 2.40 GHz , 4 Gb RAM with nVidea GeForce 8500 GT (512Mb), is my Second Life camera, operated by my alt avatar, Zoraster Gaffer. Mirrored video output from its video card is sent by S-video and audio out form my speakers to a Canopus ADVC110 digital/analog converter, which in turn passes the signal by firewire to my MacBook Pro.

On the MBP, I run Wirecast which sends the video to our QuickTime streaming server. This video can thus be viewed by people outside of Second Life, as a normal live video stream, but the real use was to attach the video to our overflow sims in Second Life. The main NMC Conference center can accommodate up to 70 avatars; once that limit is reached we send people to 2 other sims where the live video is available. see the desktop screenshot

To participate in the activities, I am also logged onto Second Life on the MacBookPro as CDB Barkley. This is always risky as an SL crash would take down the entire video stream. For some strange reason this never happens.

Bandwidth held up okay - I get about 2.5 Mbps down and > 1 Mbps up on my DS modem; both machines are connected by wire. The outgoing video stream takes about 300 kbps upstream, and the two Sl clients take about 1 Mbps down.

Looks like I need anther computer!

The white box is not part of the set up- just my recyclable can!

And I thought my Macbook was small when I first got it! I bought the Eee PC as a "toy" because I saw how active the Mac OS X community was for it. I also threw my iPod Nano on top for size comparison reasons as well as to show it off. The Eee PC doesn't even go past the Macbook's keyboard!

Just picked up this 17-inch MacBook Pro today at the Mall of America Apple Store. It has a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 CPU with 4 virtual cores, anti-reflective matte screen (way better than glossy), 500GB hard drive, ExpressCard slot (important for me), etc.

I got the desk with my dorm room, so it wasn't my choice... ;-)

Nice white LED's.

Resetting G3 PMU ? Check out Mac Users Guide for more how-to information. Based on the Yosemite architecture featuring a 450 MHz PowerPC 750 G3 processor the Apple Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) has 1 MB of backside cache, arrives with 128 MB of RAM, a 32X CD-ROM drive and an ATI Rage 128 GL graphics card. This was the first design that utilized the “fold down door” enclosure that revolutionized the way we interact with our Mac desktops. It is extremely easy to upgrade and introduced Firewire and included both USB and ADB port connectors.

Doesn't work under Leopard but it hits disco now and again which is nice.

This is a cool little series, and I don't mean because of the photography, I mean because of the two surfers. I don't know the name of the guy in the blue shirt, but him and Chuy are both pros.

I shot these for LinkSoul and I posted them on facebook soon after, but never did get around to posting them here.

I've had some queries about how I copy my slides. I have 43 boxes of 500 each so that's too many to scan. I had a Nikon slide scanner (4000dpi) but it was slow and prone to crash so I did very few whilst it was still possible to use it. (Firewire interface - remember those).

During our period of enforced isolation I decided to crack on with the remainder and archive the better ones to Flickr. I use a light table as primary illumination, an old flat bed scanner plastic guide fixed to the surface, Gitzo tripod, wedged in tight. My Fuji XT3 and 80mm f2.8 macro lens completes the set-up. The slide is placed on the field, positioned using the tilt screen precisely, any exposure compensation front dialled in ('C' position on the exposure comp top dial), 2 secs delayed exposure. Press the shutter button manually and it is done. A box of 50 slides takes about 12-15 minutes to do.

The unfolded paper clip is to angle the slide out of the carrier, the Dust Off and alcohol to make sure the field is dust free as possible.

Import in Lightroom, grade and keyword, limited processing and then post.

My audio samples are stored in a FireWire external drive for use with the MacBookPro. I am migrating everything over to the MacBookAir and Apple told me that there is no way to use FW drives natively. WTF?!

So now I am copying everything over to the new drive. Now there are many ways you can do that. You can use OSX’s native copy and paste. But OSX copy and paste is slow and would go do file counting. It also had issues if you terminate file transfers in the middle of it.

But rsync does all these—and better at it. It is already built in inside OSX. Shell tools are better and more efficient. You can buy apps which do these kinds of things but why buy crappy apps when you have the best tool for it?

Syntax:

$ rsync -av [source] [target]

or what I did in my shell:

$ rsync -av /Volumes/Ra/Audio/ /Volumes/LaCie/Audio/

where:

-a is a flag to tell rsync to turn on archive mode, where “accessed date” and “modified date” will not be modified as a result of copying.

-v is the flag for verbose mode, which shows the files being copied as the process continues.

For the rest of what rsync can do, look no further than its built-in manual, of course:

$ man rsync

I know, it's a no brainer. But I continue to be surprised at what most people didn't know is readily available in OSX

Poor FireWire. A Haynet special run with a stupid name, He was supposed to be a dusty rose grey too but when they came were more of a muddy dun. Whatever I still like him.
