I was sitting at home minding my own business when a friend calls and tells me there's a fire in a vacant building on Clinton Street. When I got there, much of the building was involved and there was a healthy gathering of onlookers.

Goodbye heritage building. A view across the adjacent construction site as the fire reaches its peak. The hotel is located in a set of low-rise refurbished heritage-protected buildings between the city and the lake foreshores. I think only one of the buildings was burnt, but not sure. Apparently no-one was hurt.
PS Newspaper reports refer to the burnt building as the New Acton Pavilion, not the Diamant Hotel, I gather they are different although the Canberra Times is still calling it "Fire at the Diamant Hotel" so not sure. The burnt building housed several bars and restaurants and some offices.
Canberra Times: "Hundreds of people are lucky to be alive after a ferocious fire destroyed one of Canberra's oldest buildings.
The heritage-listed New Acton Pavilion was engulfed by flames in a mere 20 minutes, shutting down major roads and causing chaos in peak-hour traffic.
Dark clouds of smoke were clearly visible from Parliament House and the far side of Lake Burley Griffin.
Popular eateries Flint Restaurant, Parlour Wine Room and Bicicletta were incinerated, as were the offices of the Molonglo Group, which owns the site.
Fears that the adjacent Diamant Hotel had also been destroyed were later dispelled by authorities. "
3x crews from St Neots, Huntingdon and Stangrounds Multistar 1+ in attendance following reports of a high voltage generator fire on fire on the roof of the building in the centre of town. (16/3/17)

The Feuerwehr is a number of German fire departments. The responsible body for operating and equipping fire departments are the German communities ("Gemeinden") and cities ("Städte"). By law, they are required to operate a fire-fighting force including Emergency medical services (EMS) in numbers corresponding to the inhabitants of the county or city. In cities, this is usually performed by the Fire Prevention Bureau, one of the higher-ranking authorities.
Most of Germany's 1,383,730 fire fighters are members of voluntary fire brigades, with a lesser number working in professional fire brigades either operated by
a municipal body, such as the city of Berlin (Berufsfeuerwehr - full-time city department)
a larger company ("Werkfeuerwehr", for the needs of the company operating them) e.g. refineries or chemical industry production facilities
airports to meet the ICAO requirements ("Flughafenfeuerwehr" - this includes airplane factories like that of Airbus in Hamburg)
the armed forces ("Bundeswehr-Feuerwehr" with specialized divisions such as "Fliegerhorstfeuerwehr Cologne-Wahn"/located at German air force bases, military bases, naval bases as well as on any ship of the German navy).
By law, cities with a population of more than 80,000-100,000 people (depending on the state) are required to have a professional fire fighting force ("Berufsfeuerwehr"). Others such as smaller cities and towns can set up a full-time force ("Hauptamtliche Wachbereitschaft"), which is basically a group or a squadron occupying one large fire station around the clock. This force deals with smaller incidents on its own and is supported by voluntary forces for larger incidents. Each community meets the need of fire-fighting personnel by setting up a voluntary force ("Freiwillige Feuerwehr"). A community or a city may also set up a professional fire fighting force without additional volunteer forces. In case it is not possible to recruit enough personnel for this job, the mayor of a city is required to set up a "Pflichtfeuerwehr" (compulsory fire brigade), where he will draft the number of personnel required.
