all rubbish including our daily "used" toilet paper have to be brought to the "shit" pit for burning. wasn't pleasant especially if you have to start burning toxic stuff like plastics.

FIRE IN A WHARE.

A MAN SERIOUSLY BURNED,

A Riverhead gumdigger named Walter Caldwell had a narrow escape of being burned alive in his whare early this morning. Caldwell is a single man about 59 years of age, and lives by himself in a raupo whare at Riverhead. He retired to bed as usual last night, but awoke at 3 o'clock this morning to find that end of his hut in which the door was placed in flames, and himself penned up in a small space, with no hope of escape except that offered by a small window, and with great difficulty Caldwell (who is a stout man) got through the window, but not before a shirt and singlet were burned off his back. Caldwell managed to crawl to the house of a neighbour named Lupis about 150 years(sic) distant, and aroused him. Mr Lupis, seeing how sadly Caldwell was burned, ran to the Riverhead Hotel, two miles distant, and called Mr Deacon, who placed his spring cart at his disposal. Mr Edward Lockett, who lives at the hotel, procured about a quart of raw linseed oil, and accompanied Mr Lupis back to his house. They found Caldwell in a terrible state, the soles hanging from his feet and his back scorched and blistered from the neck downwards. His arms, hands, and wrists also were in a bad condition. The oil applied made the unfortunate man feel a little better, and as soon as it was light, Messrs Lupis and Lockett drove him to the Kumeu Railway Station to intercept the Helensville train. He arrived in Auckland at 9.30 this morning, and the unfortunate man was taken to the Hospital, where his case is regarded as being very serious. His flesh is actually roasted in parts, and hangs from his feet and wrists in a horrible manner. He was conscious during the whole of the journey, and bore his suffering manfully. Caldwell has been digging around Riverhead for the last three years, and was formerly a man of some means in the Hawke's Bay district. In conjunction with his brother, it is said, he some years ago owned the West Clive Hotel in Napier. He is spoken of as a quiet steady man. He informed Mr Lockett that he had no idea how the fire originated, but is of the belief that it started in a little porch in which he stored his pots and pans, by the door.

Upon inquiry at the Hospital this afternoon we learn that the man Caldwell, who was so severely burned in his whare, at Riverhead, yesterday, is much about the same as when admitted.

The unfortunate man, Walter Caldwell, the gumdigger, who was so badly burned in his whare at Riverhead, on Monday morning last, succumbed to his injuries last night at the District Hospital, to which he was brought for treatment. The deceased has relatives in Napier.

An inquest was held ab the Hospital yesterday regarding the death of Walter Caldwell, who succumbed at that institution, on Wednesday evening, to injuries received through his whare, at Riverhead catching fire while he was asleep. Dr. Philson was the coroner, and Mr. Thomas Hombes foreman of the jury. Nothing of importance was disclosed beyond the facts already published, the medical evidence being to the effect that death had been caused through congestion of internal organs owing to the burns the deceased had suffered. The jury returned a verdict of "Died from burns accidentally received."

Plot 3: Walter Caldwell (59) 14/12/1892 – Gumdigger – Burns – at Hospital (Pres.)

James McIndoe (77) 15/12/1892 – at Costley Home (Pres.)

Anglican divisions M and N are what is known as ‘Potters Fields’, they were used to bury some of the people whose families were unable to afford funeral costs, were institutionalised or unidentified at the time of burial. These plots were common graves with many having several individuals interred in each. They were narrower and closer together and, because they were not paid for, permanent grave markers were not permitted to be erected.

It is now no longer known where either Anglican Division M or N starts let alone the rows or individual plots which have now been protected by ghost gums, native trees & flax.

However it is believed that Division M starts closest to Waitakere View Rd & that single rows were used for both areas.

There was a juddering rumble and the earth yawned. Flames shot high into air and some primal deity of flame and forge and transformation took shape in the white hot heart of the fire...well, ok, actually, this was the bonfire at the East Coast reception for a West Coast wedding, back in the hills of Virginia.

Fire can be so much fun to shoot, trying for the best photo when it's exponentially changing.

Firecrackers! Fiercely banned by the Government here, but I did manage to get it through few contacts. And I generously spent 100 bucks on that.

I ran to the streets threw the "Dragon Egg", ran back to a safe location and took pictures when the "egg cracked open".

My neighbors house went on fire around 11pm. Thankfully everyone was safe.

Fire on Judes Gap. View from World's Edge

I had to go see it. It was my first time on World's Edge and the view is amazing. I just hate to see the fire's destruction. Praying all stay safe who are fighting the blaze as well as those who's homes are nearby.

"As of 5 p.m. today, the fire had encompassed 550 acres, and could triple in size as fire crews extend fire lines to navigate the rugged mountain terrain. Three bulldozers and about 75 firefighters were working the scene this afternoon, David Brown, fire information officer for the State Fire Service, said from his cell phone at the intersection of Coopers Gap Road and Burgess Road near the Sunny View community, where plumes of smoke were clearly visible. Crews from Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, Edneyville and Sunny View fire departments continue to assist in the operation, as is Henderson County Emergency Services." ~ Gary Clancy, Times-News, BlueRidgeNow.com
