John the driver has cleaned the fire and is dropping unwanted coals via the front half of the rocking grate through the open ashpan hopper door. Pete and Neil are to the left in the pit hosing down the hot embers and will rake and wash the ashpan clean before re-fitting the spark arrestor grille. The lever running centre to top left is for opening and closing the hopper.
The remaining fire will be raked to the very back of the grate and covered over with a heap of fresh coal which will burn slowly and keep the engine hot and help retain steam pressure. Before turning in for the night we will add yet more coal to the level of the bottom of the firehole door and make sure the boiler is suitably topped up with water. In the morning there will be 50-100 lb of steam and enough glowing coal to start spreading over fresh coal that has been added to the grate. Then it won't be long before the new coal catches and the boiler begins to make steam.

Taken during a quick run through Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada. Blowing through the park before dawn looking for sunrise locations can be a bit tricky (and frustrating), especially when you've never been there before. Ended up getting skunked by the sunrise anyway...

Cold nights warrant fire, and fire we had. This was taken before we accidentally set that large log seen in the background on fire forcing us to add it to the pit before we had intended.
