Conasauga RD controlled burns to benefit mountain longleaf pine on the Armuchee
Chatsworth, Ga. (March 17, 2017) - USDA Forest Service officials of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests announced today that, weather conditions permitting, the Conasauga Ranger District is conducting several controlled burns on the following units over the next several days:
Hammond Gap 60 acres - 5 miles WNW of Trion
Narrows 40 acres - 5 miles W of Trion
Storey Mill 97 acres - 5 miles SE of Summerville
East Armuchee 337 acres - 12 miles SW of Dalton

Several burn units include longleaf pine plantings that are several years old, which require periodic burning. The controlled burns will occur on the Armuchee unit, which resides in the Ridge and Valley Landscape. This low-lying region is characterized by a series of narrow, steep ridges separated by wide, flat valleys. Its diverse habitats contain many unique species of terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna, including mountain longleaf pine.

Works best on Black (L). At the Offshoot outing to White Rock in Killiney Bay last Monday, I didn’t get anything as good as what’s already been posted although arriving late did give me a different perspective – see below.
However, when I left the after session in the pub, the near full Moon that had been hidden earlier by the mist was clear in the sky, so I went back along the coast road to check possible shots and I came on this beach party back at the White Rock. The title is from Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms:-

I took a number of versions from a distance about half way down the steps to the beach, and I like this 30 second exposure because of its movement blur and because it obscures the guys' identities. I used the Canon 100-400mm, while mounted on a Manfrotto 055CX3 tripod for 30 seconds at 320mm, f11, and ISO 100mm . . . and for the picky camera club types, yes the fire is blown out . . . get over it :-)

These outdoor fire escapes are disappearing as downtown Memphis, Tennessee, is revitalized and renovated. It's a shame... these structures are beautiful with their lines and shadows.

The hotel has a great fireplace that they light most nights - very cozy and nice sitting out there watching. I was happy to get the chance on Tuesday night - the other nights I could just smell the fire from my balcony when going to bed at midnight after working since 6am...
Some very nice folks from New Jersey and Annapolis were out there as well, enjoying the fire.
Approaching the southern end of the as enchanting as desolated Spiti Valley (Himachal Pradesh, India), my two friends and I ended up one night in a small village named Nako. Located at 3625mt on Mount Reo Purgyal's western face (6,816mt), this charming buddist village offers an incredible variety of gorgeous views to experience. But luck blessed us and what we saw went beyond ordinary: we arrived there during an astonishing wedding ceremony, and this picture perfectly captures the power of it.

Paxton Hotel was a single room occupancy hotel. located at 1432 N. La Salle street
On March23, 1993 the first company that arrived at the fire saw people hanging from the windows and ask for a box, it turned into a 5-11 and 1 special alarm. Some 24 engines, 10 trucks and 15 ambulances responded. The firemen rescued over 100 people with ground ladders on the upper floors, but the first floor windows had burglar bars and the guess in them could not escape, some 19 people died. I went to this fire but did not have my camera like I did most of the time.

I recently hosted a hearth cooking night at our house, and while I was having too much fun to remember to take pictures during the event, when I repeated some of the experiments on my own later I decided to document it.
It's much easier to cook in a fireplace than you might think! This is the fireplace in my apartment, which is actually rather small. It has a good sized pipkin, a much smaller one, and some chestnuts all in it at once. You could also experiment with roasting (I need a spit!) or grilling, and cast iron will work just fine if you don't have pottery.
Some tips: get the fire going well in advance of when you want to cook. Start with a BIG fire and let it burn down to coals. You'll actually be cooking over small piles of coals moved off the main blaze. For roasting chestnuts, I heated the base of the hearth with coals, then scraped them back into the fire and put the chestnuts (slashed) on that.
