Looking forward to getting down to work in Final Cut Studio. Still need a camera, mics, etc, etc, etc, and a trip to the Haven of Hope and all sorts of places along the way in Africa.

Funny Story: I walked out of the bedroom, into the TV room the other day... turned on the TV, and saw my wife brushing her teeth on the local news. I said; "Honey? Why are you brushing your teeth on the six oclock news???"
She glggled out of control and eventually told me it was for a medical story.

February 6.
Have spent much of the week plugging away at home on a big work project. One of the things I want to get into in 2008 is Final Cut Pro. This week is the first time I've had a chance to use this software. So far I have done only very basic chores like logging tape, organizing footage, and making subclips. But I've actually been having fun.
Also, I am loving my gigantic new desk from IKEA. It doesn't look that huge here, but it is.
Freaking A, right. Giant screen. Nice speakers. Working with a mac at work is a dream. Also note the stack of Final Cut Pro 5 books over on the right. Yea, I need to learn Final Cut Pro for this job. Not a bad deal.
And if you didn't know, I started a job at Field and Stream Magazine on Jan 2nd.

This small project turned in to a two day ordeal!
I wanted to create a simple tutorial following how I made this photo….however, that simple tutorial turned out to take A LOOOOOONG time!
Making this image only took the better part of an hour, but making the tutorial took almost 28 hours. Mostly because I had to wait for parts to render out as we are using high quality playback. Still, it was quite the task!
::
I didn't leave the house much during the editing times. I had several other projects on my plate, plus this one.
I decided to show a picture of the *almost* finished product and the workflow!
Such a daunting task that was. haha
And yes, I would do it again!

My supercool new edit station, assembled in a tendon-saving afternoon whilst hard at work on the Horror Convention Massacree!
Those who know me well, know my passion for these itsy-bitsy magical beauties. So it's with much pleasure that I got to edit the promo for Nature's upcoming show on hummingbirds.
Shooting with high-speed Phantom cameras, filmmaker Ann Prum and crew were able to capture these super-fast jewels and slow them down for all to see. The cinematography is fabulous...
So here's my promo. And if you're in the States, this show airs January 10th on your local PBS station. For birders, there will be an online contest to ID all Hummingbird species in the show. For more info check Nature's website!!
Here is a screen grab of what's getting edited today. Did a conform today with HD renders from the red R3D clips. It was a 52 hour render since we only set one machine to generate the final HD footage at full debayer.
People say films never get completed. They simply run out of time or run out of money.
(I have no idea why the quality looks crappy. Guess flickr is cheap with their bandwidth allowance...)
I needed to get creative. Getting stir crazy in the house, so i pulled a few all nighters and came up with this.
The flow of universal Creativity is wide open when the res of the world is asleep!
Well, for somebody who took up final cut pro about a month ago, this is not half bad...
I was lucky enough to be asked to catch an essence of an amazing shoot with Vancouver photographer Rob Gilbert.

K just helped me do this. I really want to give stop motion a go so did this as a little test.
Used my Canon 50D, with 50mm lens using a remote switch and of course a tripod. 37 pics put through Final Cut Pro. Then the credits and audio done in iMovie.
K doesn't think it's very good but it's a first go!
Because my Intel iMac running FCS1 can't deal with some of the FCP projects I'm given, I'm using a make-shift edit suite on my MacBook with FCE.
The Tumber batmobile keeps me amused in the interim.

I have just started exploring the video features of the Canon EOS 7D. One night in Cádiz, Spain the wind was strong and the tide was high at the La Caleta beach. This made an interesting subject for slow motion testing...
I shot this at 1280x720 50fps with a shutter at 1/100sec, ISO 1250.
With Apple Cinema Tools I set the speed to 23.98fps and threw the video into FCP. The final result came out of Apple Compressor.
Any comments on workflow is highly appreciated. I have no experience with video as I am a still photographer, but I am finding it very interesting to explore the world of video.

While I've certainly looked up specific bits of information in these books over the years, no I have not come anywhere close to reading even a fraction of the pages. You're looking at the complete original (and in very good condition) books and packaging for Final Cut Pro 3; Final Cut Pro 4 with Soundtrack, LiveType, et al; and Final Cut Pro Studio featuring FCP version 5 and adding Motion 2 and DVD Studio Pro 4 into the mix.
The stuff for versions 3 and 4 I'm making available. My friend, Andy, may set up an eBay auction for them if he can gauge whether there's much interest (e.g. other auctions of FCP manuals). If so, I'll update this entry (and blog it) with the auction URL. Otherwise, if you are interested, chime in here.
UPDATE: FCP Studio 1 is now part of the batch I'll be looking to someday unload, now that I have Studio 2 installed.

Progetto Arcevia 2.0/12
In 1972, Italo Bartoletti initiated Progetto Arcevia, a vision of an existential community which simultaneously enriched the local community of Palazzo d’Arcevia (Italy) while at the same time providing a site for creatives – artists, philosophers, architects – to come together and collaborate.
40 years later, Bartoletti’s vision has been embraced by a group of young London-based designers, Unit +. In September 2012, five members of Unit + journeyed to Riserva Privata San Settimio, the very site that Bartoletti first cultivated for Progetto Arcevia, and which is still owned by his family today. Using experiential and live mapping techniques across a range of different media (conceptual documentaries, sketches, models and a fairy tale inspired comic book), Unit + explored, documented and analysed their impressions of the site.
Through their dynamic engagement with all aspects of the Riserva, they experimented with colour-coded navigation systems, a proposal for a ‘floating’ meditation room and a towering sundial. Through the support and enthusiasm of Bartoletti’s family and the Riserva, Unit + will return in Spring 2013 to initiate these projects.
Crucial to Progetto Arcevia 2.0/12 is the fact that the fundamental ideals remain the same; Unit + are committed to operating as “a thought factory and creativity lab”, a team that values collaboration and cooperation. Their work at the Riserva in 2013 represents not only a continuation of one man’s vision, but the revitalisation of concepts that are intrinsic to collaborative design.
haven't thought to post any videos to here, so here we go! shot with a 5dmk2 and 45mm f/2.8 tilt shift on top of a parking garage in hollywood, ca. footage is raw, but i did speed it up to 475% as well as, adding some text and audio in final cut pro... enjoy :)
