I have been saying...'Harvest is On'...so I thought I'd show you my today's Harvest Collection! I usually grow 5 different varieties of Tomatoes in a rather small garden 20ft x 20ft...but I jam pack it with lots of my favourites! The 'Pesticide Free' Tomatoes did exceptionally well this year...this is just 4 of the 10 saucers I'll fill from this year's Garden...and of course Family and Friends will be included in sharing the 'Bounty'!!~

Older men and women have landmarks of their youth that they remember years later. One of mine was the price of gas when I was in college. Most stations were at .29 cents a gallon and a normal sized car could be filled for $5-6 and last an energetic lad a whole week. But I remember times when I was so poor that I could only put in a dollar or two at a time. Some farmer has built a scene from his past, complete with a telephone booth.

A shot posted thanks to Ruth , I took this shot twelve odd years ago and Ruth took a shot last week for SSC which reminded me of this old shot . Ruth's shot was taken up on the Orkneys from a WW2 look-put post .

On the other hand this was taken at the other end of the UK at the Battery at St. Anthony's Head on the Roseland Peninsula looking across Carrick Roads to Falmouth in Kernow ( Cornwall ) .

Concrete buildings on the tip of the Roseland Peninsular represent a local history of military fortifications, including a gun battery, ammunition stores and gunner's lookout.

The first artillery was built in 1796 in response to the French invasion and was a battery of 24-pounder cannons. In 1885 these were replaced by 64-pounder muzzle loaders. In 1904 a completely new coastal fort was built, with two huge 6 inch VII breech loading guns, each with 23ft long barrels.

The gun pedestals were mounted in 7ft deep pits, and below them was the magazine, entered by a central door. The magazine layout was designed to reduce the risk of accidental explosion – shells and cartridges were stored apart from each other, and lifted up to the gun pits using separate hand-cranked hoists, only coming together when they were loaded into the guns.

The battery remained fully operational, and the magazine filled with ammunition, until 1956 when the guns were dismounted, cut up and carted away for scrap. When we bought the headland in 1959 the gun pits were filled with rubble. The eastern pit has now been excavated to expose the original walkways, stores and ammunition hoists.

Info from National Trust webpage who now care for the Battery .

In the first comment comment box there is a view of the observation point from the outside and a view of St. Anthony Head lighthouse which is below the Battery further down the cliff !
