1874 / Huile sur toile

En 1874, Répine passe l'été à Veules-les-Roses, en Normandie, sur les conseils du peintre de marines Alexeï Bogolioubov. Celui-ci, qui vivait alors à Paris, avait lui-même découvert cette région en 1857 grâce au peintre Eugène Isabey. Il insistait auprès des jeunes boursiers russes pour qu'ils expérimentent aussi la peinture de plein air. Ce voyage normand fut une expérience importante pour Répine. Plusieurs habitants posèrent pour lui, comme cette petite fille de pêcheur. La pauvreté de son vêtement, son visage mélancolique et sa chevelure emmêlée sont traités avec beaucoup de subtilité et sans misérabilisme.

Filles Open 2014

While driving home from hiking in Big Bear Lake last Saturday, Brent and I saw smoke in the Corona area. We drove down a street closest to the fire, and ended up being very close to the fire. The helicopters were dropping water right in front of us . . . we could feel the spray of the water! It was an amazing sight. Fortunately, the firefighters were able to get the fire under control before it did too much damage.
