Undoubtedly the world's largest cargo airline nowadays when it comes to fleet size and freight tons flown, Federal Express today employs a fleet of some 480 aircraft worldwide. All this began in the sixties, when a certain Frederick Wallace Smith, a Yale-student at that time, developed a concept for a new, rapid-delivery system for parcels and documents. With neither the US Postal Service nor US air cargo companies flexible enough, Smith was convinced that only a concept where one single company was responsible for pick-up, air transport and delivery could guarantee a fast and reliable delivery.
In 1971 Fred Smith founded Federal Express at Little Rock, AR, but after lack of support from there, moved the company to Memphis, TN, and started overnight deliveries in 1973. A fleet of 14 used Dassault Falcon 20 jets was acquired, and the 25 largest cities of the USA were served via the Memphis hub. During the first night of operation on 17 April 1973, a grand total of 186 packages was carried. Today, on a typical weekday, more than 14 million packages are carried in the USA alone, and over 17 million worldwide. Federal Express has become an institution, even leading to a new verb in the English language: to fedex = sending something via Federal Express!
With mostly wide bodied aircraft in use today, as a contrast one of the original 14 Falcon 20 freighters was captured day-stopping at Boeing Field, showing the company's original livery of the seventies. Registered as N18FE, this aicraft was built as a dedicated freighter for PanAm in 1970, and acquired by FedEx in May 1973. After 12 years of service, when larger Boeing 727s had taken over, N18FE was sold in 1985, and flew with a variety of airlines in the USA and Italy. In 2006 it was acquired by Dodson, parted out and eventually scrapped at Rantoul, KS.
Fred Smith served as FedEx's CEO until 2022, when he stepped down and became executive chairman of the company, the position he held until his death at 80 in 2025. In rememberance, Memphis-International airport has now been renamed Frederick W. Smith International Airport as of 11 August 2026.

FedEx 727 N468FE on its take-off roll at Memphis International Airport in 2006. This jet flew for Eastern, Bahamasair and Delta before becoming a freighter. FedEx retired it in 2013.

Still wearing Sudan Airways colors is FedEx A300 N740FD. The Airbus has come to Memphis from Dresden, Germany, after completeing its Passenger to freighter mod. Originally delivered to Air Liberte (France) in 1990, FedEx stored this jet to VCV in 2023.
In September 2013, FedEx MD-11 N523FE is on final for Runway 27 at Memphis International completing a flight from Philadelphia This tri-jet was originally delivered to Delta Air Lines as N808DE in June 1993. In April 2026 it has been sitting at JFK since November 2025 due to the UPS incident around the same time.

The aircraft was built in 1997 and was originally delivered as PK-GIL to Garuda on 24-5-1997.
Later delivered to Varig as PP-VQJ, on 29-10-1999. Later transferred to TAM as PT-MSH on 4-2-2007.
It was withdrawn from use and converted to a freighter during late 2008/early 2009.
FedEx took delivery as N572FE on 20-7-2009.

FedEx MD10-10F N365FE seen at Memphis International in August 2013. The McDonnell Douglas product first flew for United Airlines as DC-10-10 N1802U in 1971. It was retired to Victorville, California, in March 2019.

FedEx 767 N299FE is landing on Runway 27 at Memphis International after a flight from Los Angeles. I had just flown on this jet a month earlier. JFK-MEM.

The aircraft was built in 1992 and was delivered as D-AERW to LTU International Airways on 10-7-1992.
It was later operated by Swissair as HB-IWS - they took delivery on 5-11-1998.
TransMile were next to operate the aircraft. They took delivery as N71WF in April 2005, where the aircraft would undergo a conversion to a freighter. It was re-registered to 9M-TGR on 1-8-2005.
FedEx took delivery of the aircraft as N642FE on 16-9-2011.
As of November 2022 the aircraft has been in storage.
