Today I had an interview and kind of got a new job (I say kind of - it's a job in the same place I have worked for the past 10 years, with the same boss and it's the extension of a project I've been working on for the past 2-3 years. And I was the only person who was qualified and interviewed for it. Not saying it was a done deal but I stood a VERY good chance!). Anyhoo, changes are afoot for me as I'll be moving out of the office I'm currently in (with colleagues who I love) and into my own room in a different building. It's a project I'm seconded to for 2 years and it's all going to be very hectic and very cool I hope. I was ok at that interview you know - yay me!

A sunny February day in Rackwick, Hoy on the walk to The Old Man of Hoy

I met Dana, her boyfriend Alex and her sister Erin today. I drove about an hour and a half to meet them and we spent pretty much the whole day together. We met at noon and then had lunch, followed by Target. Afterwards, I followed them downtown where we walked around and took pictures. We then drove over to "Antique Alley" and walked around antique stores and what not for a while. Then, it was off to the park for a bit. It was Miss Erin's birthday and the pub was calling their name. I still had an hour and a half to drive, so I hugged necks and headed home. It was so nice to meet them all. They were all gorgeous and fit as fiddles. I felt like a bridge troll. But hey, I kept up with the best of them! In Chucks no less. Speaking of, Dana bought a pair! I swear, if you spend too much time with me, it's bound to happen.

The above picture was taken in one of the antique stores we went into. I wanted to buy this so damn bad. I never even looked at the price. I just knew it would be too expensive. This particular store was quite fond of it's merchandise. $500 for a lawn chair? Okay.

I took 228 photos. I will probably use about 20. Not because they suck, but because who in the hell uploads 228 pictures in one sitting? Not I. I'm sure I will get a lot of use out of them. Also, Dana and Erin? If you have any pictures of me, please burn them. Thank you!

20 second exposure balanced against a tree branch - it was pretty much pitch black except for the lights in the distance. You can see the smudges of Lupe and Shoko under the bough.

On this day in history in 1900 - the Labour Party for formed in the UK.

The Labour Party itself sees February 27 1900 as the date when the party began life, what was formed then was not in fact a party, but a coalition of like-minded groups with a view to achieving representation in Parliament for the working classes. The name ‘Labour Party’ would not be adopted until several years later.

The grouping called itself The Labour Representation Committee, and was formed at the conclusion of a two-day conference in London’s Memorial Hall on Farringdon Street. The 129 delegates from the Fabian Society, Independent Labour Party, Scottish Labour Party, Social Democratic Federation and various trades unions united behind Keir Hardie’s motion to create: “A distinct Labour group in Parliament.” Cynics may comment that such unity was short-lived and the party has divided into factions ever since, perhaps inevitably given the significant class and political differences between the various original components.

Ramsay MacDonald became the Labour Representation Committee’s secretary, partly because he (via his wife) was independently wealthy so no salary cost accrued to the new body. In October 1900 the new political force fielded 15 candidates, with Keir Hardie and Richard Bell winning seats. The seeds of future power had been sown.

Alrewas Signal Box situated on the relatively short section of line between the Derby – Birmingham line and Lichfield is seen here on the 21st February 2015. The box was built by the London and North Western Railway and opened in February 1899. It has a brick base with a wooden operating floor and originally had a toilet on a landing at the top of the steps. It was originally fitted with a 25 lever London and North Western Railway tumbler mechanical frame and a gate wheel. In 1969 it became a fringe to Derby PSB and the mechanical frame was replaced by a small panel mounted on the blockshelf in 1982.

On the 23rd October 2005 the box was damaged by a small fire caused by a hi-viz vest being left over an electric heater. Although the interior was badly smoke damaged the signalling panel and level crossing control equipment were still working. This “saved” the current structure and it was repaired/refurbished with the entrance to the signallers toilet being relocated into the main structure. Whilst the work was being undertaken the signallers were accommodated in a temporary cabin only entering the Signal Box to operate the signalling equipment.

This is a confusing time in Portland, as it appears to be spring already.

Meanwhile, back home they have about three feet of snow.

I'm not complaining... I went for a walk in the sun today and I even found a rose. Whoever heard of roses blooming in February?! Crazy.
