I enjoy taking portraits and I am particularly fascinated by smiles. All of them! Whilst some are easier to interpret than others, not all of them represent happiness and I’m sure that this enigmatic facial expression has been the subject of hundreds of studies...
I’ve been thinking about trying to categorise some of my portraits into the various smile ‘categories’. I’m certain that I’ll be wrong on the nuance and I’m also aware, particularly after reading the opinion of the great Garry Winogrand, that photography provides very little context.
But here I go with my second, the gold standard - The Duchenne! It’s an infectious smile, a smile that flushes your soul with endorphins and raises spirits of those lucky enough to have seen it. It’s an expression that signals true enjoyment.

NASA INFO: February 20, 1962. 9:47:39 am EST. Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 14. Powered flight lasted 5 minutes 1 second and was completed normally. During the launch countdown on 2/20/62, all systems were energized and final overall checks were made. the count started at T-390 minutes by installing and connecting the escape-rocket igniter. The service structure was then cleared and the spacecraft was powered to verify no inadvertent pyrotechnic ignition. The personnel then returned to the service structure to prepare for static firing of the reaction control system at T-250 minutes. The spacecraft was then prepared for boarding at T-120 minutes. The hatch was put into place at T-90 minutes. During installation a bolt was broken, and the hatch had to be removed to replace the bolt causing a 40 minute hold. From T-90 to T-55 final mechanical work and spacecraft checks were made and the service was evacuated and moved away from the launch vehicle. At T-45 minutes, a 15 minute hold was required to add fuel to the launch vehicle and at T-22 minutes and additional 25 minutes was required for filling the liquid-oxygen tanks as a result of a minor malfunction in the ground support equipment used to pump liquid oxygen into the launch vehicle. At approximately T-35 minutes, filling of the liquid-oxygen tanks began and final spacecraft and launch vehicle systems checks were
started. At T-10 minutes the spacecraft went on internal power. At T-6min 30 seconds, a 2 minute hold was required to make a quick check of the network computer at Bermuda. The launch vehicle went on internal power at T-3 minutes. At T-35 seconds the spacecraft umbilical was ejected and at T-0 the main engines started. Liftoff occurred at T+4 seconds at 9:47:39am EST.
The February Ohio Foothills flickr challenge is "red." At first, I was having trouble finding "red," but now I have red-eye...red things just keep jumping out at me! This is a portion of the walls of our computer room. I went a little wild on the paint job...when Todd and I purchased this house, it was about 4 years old and the family had only painted the 3 children's bedrooms so I had blank white canvases in all of the rooms. Slowly but surely, I've painted and/or tear-wallpapered everywhere except the 3 already-painted rooms, one wall of the exercise room (I'm trying to plan out a mirror-type, stucco thing for that wall), and the half-bath (for those of you who've been to my home, you know that I frequently change the decor in that little half-bath, good ol' Spooky Claus :) so I may never paint it...anyway, back to my story. The computer room actually received this paint job because the wet bar (built by the previous owner) had a red countertop and we had a black couch; plus, I had some leftover black paint from another project...add a little red, a LOT of painter's tape, and you have heartbeat-inspired, Charlie Brown t-shirt-ish walls!

Elizabeth Calder, the donor, was here from 1965 to 1970 – Her husband, Chris Calder was an engineer for the Public Works Department (PWD) for the WA Government and worked in the Ord from January 1964 to 1970 – In 1968 he was the site engineer to get power and roads in place for construction to start on the Top Dam site. We first received a Cotton Festival program from Elizabeth in 2015, since received a 2nd archive with several other unique documents and most recently this 35mm slide collection in May 2018.
On February 26, 2022, the Polar Bear Plunge at Seaside Heights returned to the beach in a big way! Nearly 6,000 plungers raised over $2 Million dollars for Special Olympics New Jersey this year!

On February 24 1913 the fate of two grey ducks lay in the hands of the Minister of Internal Affairs. Patricia Burrowes wrote to the Minister of Internal Affairs on February 24, from Gore Police Station, asking for permission to keep the birds at her private residence. She had seen one bird was injured and couldn’t fly and wished to protect the birds from youths and dogs. Keeping the ducks required high level sign off. A warrant had to be issued under Section 32 of the Animals Protection Act 1908. Thankfully Minister Francis Henry Dillon Bell issued a warrant in March 1913.
This piece of correspondence is from the Department of Internal Affairs. The Annual single number files sequence from the Department is being digitised by Archives New Zealand, starting with the most recent material. Correspondence from 1913 down to 1911 is now available online via Archway in series 8333.

Dwarf Cherry Tree.....
Last fall we pruned our trees in the front yard and Karen brought in a cutting and put it in a jar in the front window, since then she has faithfully changed the water and kept it in the sun. now it has begun sprouting leaves. It must think the unseasonably good weather is actually spring. hopefully it survives and we can plant it in the backyard this spring... wait a minute that's only 20 days away. LOL.

There's three yards in my area that are held in highest regard among local birders...of course Janice's, and Ellen's, and Eva's...they all can offer amazing moments from time to time...and I was thrilled to see this male Painted Bunting in Eva's yard yesterday! Usually it is April's Spring migration before any are seen here, but you might recall that Janice had a lovely green female Painted Bunting back in December!

The morning 7th of February I woke up to see Amsterdam covered in a coat of fresh snow. The snow fell in sudden flurries and gusts and turned the world white and wonderful. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in the winter. It snowed for the second time this winter in Amsterdam. Because the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius the snow stayed. The real feel temperature was -11 degrees Celsius cause there was a strong wind and drifting snow. It got more than a few centimeters of snow. The best advice is to stay indoors and turn the stove up a bit. Or of course to go outside to take some nice pictures. The snow is a rare highlight in these February dark days, especially when you have small children. It is quite difficult to come up with something fun in these Covid-19 lock-down days. After a while, sitting indoors becomes quite monotonous for such a toddler. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children and adults here in Amsterdam. Snowball fight, make snowmen, go sledding and adults go cross-country skiing. All fun activities that people do in this beautiful snowy world.
Storm Darcy was a storm that hit parts of Western Europe from February 7, 2021. In the Netherlands, Belgium, the east of the United Kingdom and parts of the north and west of Germany, strong winds were accompanied by drifting snow, creating snow dunes. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. Photo taken in the Damstraat, seen in a westerly direction to the Dam. Normally a lot of activity in this street that focuses on tourism. Now during the Lockdown everything closed with a few lost tourists in the distance on Dam Square. Dam Square is a square in the center of Amsterdam. The Dam was in fact a dam in the river Amstel. The dam is the historic heart of the city and the site of many events of national significance. On Dam Square are the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the National Monument, where the annual National Remembrance Day is held in memory of the victims of the Second World War. The next days it will keep on snowing. Expected more than 17 cm snow in Amsterdam. It's a joy to walk around in my neighborhood.
Vanmorgen 7 februari werd ik wakker en zag Amsterdam bedekt met een laag verse sneeuw. De sneeuw die vannacht viel bedekte de wereld om ons heen wit en prachtig. Ik heb mijn camera gepakt en op pad gegaan in m'n buurtje. Ik geniet van het geluid van knarsende sneeuw onder mijn schoenen en het prachtige gezicht op de Amsterdamse grachtenpanden. Het is min vier graden en het blijft vandaag de hele dag sneeuwen. Met een stevige wind is de gevoelstemperatuur zelf -11 graden. Mijn handschoenen en m'n sjaal houden mij warm genoeg. Er is iets heel moois over Amsterdam in de winter. Amsterdam is bedolven onder dik pak sneeuw. Het beste advies is dan maar om lekker binnen te blijven en de kachel iets hoger te zetten. Of natuurlijk even naar buiten te gaan om wat mooie plaatjes te schieten. In Amsterdam heeft het nu voor de tweede keer deze winter gesneeuwd. Bij deze temperatuur blijft de sneeuw liggen. Er is meer dan enkele centimeters sneeuw gevallen. De sneeuw is een zeldzaam hoogtepunt tijdens de donkere lock-down dagen in februari. Foto van de Damstraat, gezien in westelijke richting naar de Dam. Normaal veel bedrijvigheid in deze straat die gericht is op het toerisme. Nu tijdens de Covid-19 Lockdown alles dicht met een paar verdwaalde toeristen te zien in de verte op Dam. De Dam is een plein in het centrum van Amsterdam. De Dam was namelijk een dam in de rivier de Amstel. De Dam is het historische hart van de stad en de locatie van veel evenementen van nationale betekenis. Aan en op de Dam staan het Koninklijk Paleis, de Nieuwe Kerk en het Nationaal Monument, waar de jaarlijkse Nationale Dodenherdenking wordt gehouden ter nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De komende dagen blijft het sneeuwen. Verwacht meer dan 17 cm sneeuw in Amsterdam.
The Southern Flinders Ranges is a tough location for vineyards.
The Skorpos family have had some success with the Flinders Run Winery at Baroota, but just up the road there are acres and acres of dead vines from others who have tried and failed. A stark reminder of the precarious position the local producers are in.
With the brutal summer we have had so far (10 days over 40 decress celcius in January, with a maximum over 48c) it is going to be a very tough season.
LSWR Radial Tank 4-4-2T 488, built in 1885, takes water on a February weekend visit to Sheffield Park on the Bluebell Railway in West Sussex.
Preserved in 1962 when, as British Railways 30583, it was withdrawn after working trains on the Lyme Regis branch for many years. Today it is out of service and needs major, major boiler work to steam again.

The first time I saw the Moody Blues performing was in 1969, first in Southampton and then later in the same year at the Albert Hall. John Lodge and Justin Hayward had joined them by then. We also have a DVD of them live at the Albert Hall in 2000, which is a very good recording. They still perform many concerts every year, mostly in the USA. This year they are having a concert cruise in the Caribbean.

The group re-formed in November 1966, and new members were John Lodge, their bassist from El Riot, and Justin Hayward, formerly of The Wilde Three. Hayward was recommended to Pinder by Eric Burdon of The Animals and was endorsed by famed UK singer Marty Wilde, the leader of the Wilde Three.
