"February, when the days of winter seem endless and no amount of wistful recollecting can bring back any air of summer."

- Shirley Jackson

"February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March."

They have taken down a couple of large bushes in the churchyard, opening up the view. Not sure why, perhaps to do just that.

Couple of fascinating things about our winter thus far:

Our February is slated to go down as the coldest MONTH EVER on record here in the Syracuse area. We're averaging over 15 degrees below normal.

We've also broken the record for most days below zero (22) and the first month ever in this area where we never rose above freezing.

Pretty historical stuff!

I've been in meetings for two days straight and Tigs has taken it upon himself to provide moral support. Good job Tigs! No meeting scheduled for tomorrow.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Nothing brand new really, I just thought I'd share the card I sent Daria for Deborah's February Card Chain Challenge.

Have a great day!

The flowering quince continue in bloom - but a dip to 27o the other night darkened the blossoms to a dark pink. Still a few buds that may open. (It also knocked out most of the camellia blossoms but some are OK + buds are OK.) btw I shoot the flowering quince mostly in the soft golden light of late afternoon.

At the end of January I found 2 nests in our boxes: one is Bluebird (the pair are in the box this morning!) and I think the other is flying squirrel. I'm going to clean out the latter and give the birds a chance ... if birds don't nest then the flying squirrels can roost in it.

We've been through a colder stretch but it should start warming up again today. Have a good Monday!

Vinegar is for todays letter V, can’t beat this on fish & chips.

It does not get much better than this on the last Saturday in February on the Outer Banks...It has been a delightful winter here with minimal days of freezing cold and stunning days of sunshine and beauty.

I generally do not even complain about what the natives call cold (in the 50’s or low 60’s) and you rarely see them out and about when it is below 50! That is autumn sweatshirt weather for me...when it gets into the upper 40’s i am still not in a coat...just a down vest or my trusty hooded sweatshirts, of which i have a nice variety!

Suffice it to say it was a sunscreen kinda day today with a cool breeze on the beach and that beautiful mist on the swells which had the pelicans dancing and diving through it!

Now i am actually tired from the fresh salt air and sunshine and i am actually going to bed at a reasonable time. Tomorrow i am “arting” with a friend and organizing a class i want to give here at my home! A step outside the comfort zone of this introvert that treasures alone time! Reach...try...grow......and hope for wings on the way down from the leap! :)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

Hope everyone is doing well.

After the time compensation due the switch from Quarz to the atomic clocks based on Cesium oscilations, in 1962 February was compensated with two additional days. Its the only time in history with a 30 days February. See more about it in Wikipedia.

My first sunrise photos after hundreds of sunsets. Yes I am more an owl than the early morning bird. I need a couple of coffees before having a touch of inspiration. So it is logical that I started my sunrise HDR project during Winter holidays. In my view only bakers and the NSA should get up early. And the NSA should be first in case of suspicious bakers....

Odd clouds for February as warm air starts filtering into our area.
