If you've ever watched a Tufted Titmouse you know, like many small birds, they can be very fast and unpredictable.
They are frequent, year-round visitors in our yard, but their speed and unpredictability is why I very seldom am able to get any shots of them!
So, I was thrilled when I spotted this one at the mealworm feeder the other day! It showed up a few times and I was able to get this shot before it took off with a beak full of those tasty mealworms. I can only guess this parent was taking them to go - to feed a hungry baby or two!
I ran across this active wasp at Sandy Creek Park, Durham, NC (USA) on 25 August 2020. It was hunting rapidly across the floor of a woodland, and I initially mistook it for a female velvet ant--then it flew. It seems to be rather uncommon, but it may just be hard to notice, as it does not appear to visit flowers.

Presumably a female. Seems that males are mostly unknown in this group!
Author of this species is American entomologist Ezra Townsend Cresson (1838-1926). I did a little print source and Internet research on him. The wasp was no doubt named "mariae" in honor of his wife (married 1859), Mary Ann Ridings Cresson (1837-1909).

Very simple yet very fast photosensor circuit. The 51 ohm resistor matches to a 50-ohm cable so there is no ringing (edit: well, a bit edit2:truly, no ringing). The photodiode is an Osram SFH213, which claims a 5 nanosecond risetime. The 420 ohm resistor prevents the photodiode from slagging itself (drawing too much current and overheating) in bright light, but the 0.47uF cap allows capture of bright transients (say, from a strobe tube...).
Output goes to an oscilloscope with a 50 ohm input (with sufficient bandwidth, natch).
In practice, you want to keep the distance from the flash far enough (or use diffusion or reflection) so the output is less than a volt for flashes up to a few milliseconds, otherwise you discharge that cap too much and the curve gets distorted. For long durations (like continuous light), outputs up to 500 mV are linear.
(BTW: the resistors are surface-mounts, on the other side of the board, but that's not at all critical - just what I had on hand. I use a 9V battery for convenience. 6V or 12V should work fine too.)

Sb 600 fired upwards using the ceiling to bounce the light to the model at a 1/6.5 power.
I recently did a photo shoot which invloved a car and the model in every shot. I love the results.
P.s I got a new computer! Its been a pain having to move all my files but i love how fast it is. Its going to help a whole lot when im editing. Less frustration for me ahah. For anyone who attended the game, on this play, SKC lost control of the ball and the action went the other way. The crowd erupted in dismay, the players protested, and the umpire of course said there was no contact. I beg to differ.

356-365 toy project
Bald Eagle in flight...Taken on the Day when Don and Ashala joined me. This particular shot was when Don and I were talking. All of a sudden here the Eagle comes flying very fast, I did not have but a moment to warn Don. We did get just a few shots and it was outta here. But the light was really good on this close fly by. Pretty exciting to see and experience.
