From My Photo Archives: An interior view of the Paper Calmenson & Co. factory in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on July 20, 1990. This firm (now known as PACAL Industries) was a manufacturer of fabricated steel products and also did welding and flame-cutting.
Built in 1907, this was home to the Hopkins Candy Factory, which had sales in every state east of the Mississippi River and shipped over five tons of candy daily. The candy factory stopped production around 1917. Today it's the home of the Center for Performing Arts and also hosts exhibitions by local artists.
Processed in Photoshop to look antique. I used a curves adjustment layer to narrow the tonal range, then a gradient map to create a split tone effect. After that, a texture overlay made from a scan of an old daguerreotype to create the faded edges.
Other than the bright blue roofs and trees, this doesn’t look much like a North American industrial zone. The difference? In North America these factories would be surrounded by hectares of parking lots full of cars, taking up as much land as the factories themselves.
Aperture adjustments: levels, white balance, edge sharpening.
Location: on the flight from Beijing (Běijīng Shì (北京市) to Ürümqi (ئۈرۈمچی, Wūlǔmùqí, 乌鲁木齐), Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (شىنجاڭ ئۇيغۇر ئاپتونوم رايونى, Xīnjiāng Wéiwú’ěr Zìzhìqū, 新疆维吾尔自治区), People’s Republic of China (Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó, 中华人民共和国). Geotagged position is approximate, interpolated along an assumed flight path.

Mission Director Polly Dunford joined the U.S. Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission Michael Newbill on a visit to Eastex Garment Co. Ltd factory - one of garment factories that supplies Swedish company H&M. They saw firsthand how the products are made as well as the work conditions and safety measures for the factory workers. They also met with local trade union representatives and health trainers to discuss wages, working conditions and, workers' health.
Fagus Factory in Alfeld is a 10-building complex - began around 1910 to the design of Walter Gropius, which is a landmark in the development of modern architecture and industrial design. Serving all stages of manufacture, storage and dispatch of lasts used by the shoe industry, the complex, which is still operational today, is situated in Alfeld an der Leine in Lower Saxony. With its groundbreaking vast expanses of glass panels and functionalist aesthetics, the complex foreshadowed the work of the Bauhaus school and is a landmark in the development of architecture in Europe and North America.
