We had the factory designed to make good use of natural daylight and to provide a pleasant and light environment in which to work. Good natural light is also helpful when working with natural wood. A set of roof lights run the length of the factory, leting natural light flood in.

My first workplace. Located in Reading, Pennsylvania, The VF Factory Outlet flagship store is in the complex of buildings that once housed the Berkshire Knitting Mills. These buildings are huge.
This factory was so important in Mansfield's development that in the early 20th century Mansfield was known locally as the chocolate town. (And until very recently, apparently much of the town often smelled like chocolate.) Lowney, the company's founder, helped develop many public works in Mansfield and donated park space, among other things. The factory later became home to Merckens Chocolate and then ADM Cocoa (Archer Daniels Midland.) I am not sure whether ADM is still there (they were supposed to be moving to Pennsylvania) or if it's empty now. If it's empty, someone's still maintaining the grass and the flowers...
HDR (3 exposures -2 0 +2) tonemapped in Photomatix plus a little sharpening in Photoshop. Changed the white balance a little, colours as shot.
While standing inside this car park all by myself I suddenly felt quite overcome by a number of different emotions. Thinking how at one time this place must have been bustling with activity.. the noises, the smell, the mutterings (and no doubt plenty of swearing) from the presumably hundreds of people who worked here. Then it kind of felt like being inside Ridley Scott's spaceship "Nostromo"... not particularly eager to become acquainted with his alien, I decided it was time to leave...

We were accompanied by elderly British tourists. They were much more interested in the subject, and openly amazed at how good our Indian-Malaysian guide's English was.

A surprisingly well conserved factory. There was also an amazing library full of books, catalogs, art, radiocassettes...that was separated from this report for it's greatness. Three floors awaiting to be explored.
