Meine Liebste......

Picture Control: C18 (Graphite)
While at the 148th Kentucky Derby, there were wonderful faces in the crowd. In this grouping, I was playing with one of the camera's built-in Picture Control modes... Graphite. I really love the way the setting pushed the contrast and created a depth that Monochrome simply could not match.

Another Day... another zoo. This time I got to visit the Los Angeles Zoo with the amazing team from Paul's Photo (Torrance, CA).
It was the 29th annual zoo gear loaner event. (You come to the zoo, you get to borrow camera gear for free.)
The mornings are pumped full of different shooting events all designed to help you get better images. A photo walk led by a zoo photographer... several 'lens envy' stations with big glass from several different manufacturers... and several roaming instructors (my assignment).
This was made on the last stop of the day. These two were napping as I got the 600mm set-up. How they can nap with all those people hollering and whistling is beyond me... but they eventually stirred and then greeted each other affectionately.
Patience paid off.

FTZ + NIKKOR 200-500mm VR. In-camera capture: 1080/120p.
Post processing via: Final Cut Pro X
Before I had tried remote capture, I was doing it by actually being at the camera. After over an hour of sitting on the patio, I discovered that ZERO bird would show up while I was outside. So... I had my tripod set-up in the living room... aimed out my open front door. This seemed to give the peace of mind they needed to stop by and visit.
I wanted to test the video... and so I did. In camera setting were for the 1080/120p (with sound). I slowed down the footage in post.
Due to copywriter issues, the best way to watch this is over on my instagram. The music really makes a big difference!

OK... something really different... birds... captured in 1080/120 (non-slo-mo in order to grab some of the ambient sound.
The clip was brought into FinalCut ProX and slowed down.

OK... first off this was so freaking EASY!!
The hardest part was figuring out how to stab the dead bee with a super thin needle in order to hold him still. He kept spinning around and facing different directions.
The Z7... Z6 and D850 also have this trick... has a 'Focus Shift Shooting' option BUILT-IN. (Still Shooting Menu). Once you get everything composed, simply focus in front of the subject then the camera will shoot... move the focus... shoot again... move the focus again.... over and over again.
In the computer, I chose the first image that had something sharp... in this case, it was the tip of the antenna... and the last image to have something sharp... legs in this shot. Then take all the images between those two and dump them into Helicon. About a minute later... out spits a full stacked image. After a bit of touch up in PhotoShop Elements, I called it done!
Anyone know a good hair stylist that works on super small projects?
Trying out an old, small, light, manual focus 50mm with the FTZ adaptor. It will autofocus on F mounts, but won't with the adaptor, although the Z6 gives you a nice little indicator when things are in focus manually.

Catching up on a lot of unposted images...
Recently, I have been playing with remote bird photography. The set-up is pretty straight forward:
1) set-up a camera and telephoto lens on a tripod.
2) aim the camera/lens/tripod at a spot where birds are likely to visit. (I hedge my bet and put out some bird seed on a corner of my patio wall)
3) go back inside the house. (The birds don't like it when I'm outside near the seed.)
4) turn on the iPad and launch the SnapBridge app.
5) wait for a bird to come into my field of view on the iPad.
6) use SnapBridge to focus, adjust exposure and capture the image.
That's really about it. SnapBridge allows me to see a live view from the camera via my iPad... wirelessly. So it is almost like cheating.
Almost.
