HE > me

Early 20th century private postcard (probably from the 1910s) of father and mother sitting with their younger daughter standing between them, and the identically dressed older daughters standing behind them. Dressing twins alike is not a new phenomenon.

Unfortunately no additional information is available - not even the name of the photographer (though this is obviously taken at a professional studio). But it is likely taken in Sweden.

The two older girls counts as grown-ups here, with their hair pinned up. And it's not only their clothes that are matching, but even their jewelry, wearing as they are identical necklaces/brooches (you can't really tell which one it is). Not that I can say for sure that they are twins, nor that this is even a family - but it has every likelihood as everything is presented that way.

The younger girl has a brooch holding together a collar decorated with lace (probably removable), the same way her mother has some fancy lace around her neck and down the front of her black dress - also most likely pinned on. The father is also well dressed with a stiff collar (most likely removable too, it was quite popular at the time) and the hint of a chain to a pocket-watch.

Sicily was having way too much fun at the beach to hold still for a photo. Took several, and this one turned out best. In several of the others, we were inadvertantly photobombed by other beachgoers who were oblivious to our efforts at a simple family photo.

Another shot from Nxai Pan, Botswana.

Taken just before sunset, September 2018.

"Nxai Pan National Park is a national park in north-eastern Botswana, consisting of Nxai Pan, which is one of the Makgadikgadi Pan salt flats. Nxai Pan National Park lies just north of the Maun-Nata main road and adjoins Makgadikgadi Pans National Park on its northern border. The pan itself is a fossil lake bed about 40 square km in size."

The River Tamar forms the boundary between Cornwall and Devon. Rising only 4 miles from Bude and the Atlantic Ocean, it flows south, slowly at first, for nearly 50 miles to the English Channel. In its middle reaches, the River Tamar winds its way through steep wooded country.

This is also an area strewn with the relics of two centuries of mining and is part of Cornwall's and West Devon's World Heritage Site. On the Cornish side is Cotehele Quay, once a busy port on which the local community depended. It is now looked after by the National Trust. Several times a year, at the height of the spring tide, the quays disappear under water.

As the sun went down a family of swans appeared from around the corner of one of the marooned buildings. In the fading light they paused to search the shallow water covering the quays for food.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas, whatever you are doing, and thank you all for your interest and support over the past year.

Today I am very grateful for my family and the time we could spend down to Ken’s.

Seahorses in the aquarium

The unique Glasswing or Clearwing (Greta oto, too Greta morgane oto) is a brush-footed butterfly where its wings are completely transparent. Like its English name its Spanish name too is very fascinating. It is called 'Espejitos', which means 'little mirrors’. The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass.

The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown, sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. The length of the wings is between 4.5 and 6.0 cm. It is thought that their mostly transparent wings make these butterflies less visible when in flight.

It is a day active common butterfly from Central America (Mexico to Panama) and the Caribbean. The Glasswing may also be found in Venezuela in the mountain area around the City of Caracas. Adult glaswings inhabit the tropical rainforest and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers.

This picture was taken in the indoor tropical butterfly garden of De Passiflorahoeve in Harskamp, the Netherlands.
