Sometimes it's hard to get Eden to stop making funny faces--which are often actually pretty funny, I have to admit. This is in front of the Exxon Building, which is (technically) part of Rockefeller Center.
There was a line for 1.99 gas down the street, the 3 cents per gallon savings wasn't worth the 10 minute wait.

Workers surround houses in Mayflower, Arkansas in an attempt to clean up an oil spill April 1, 2013. Exxon's Pegasus pipeline, which can carry more than 90,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude from Patoka, Illinois to Nederland, Texas, was shut down March 29, 2013 after a leak was discovered in a subdivision near the town of Mayflower, Arkansas. The leak forced the evacuation of 22 homes. Exxon had no specific estimate of how much crude oil had spilled, but the company said 12,000 barrels of oil and water had been recovered. The company did not say how much of the total was oil and how much was water. Greenpeace Photo by Karen E. McCall
I went to my first community meeting last night. You'd think a company as pro-environment [cough] as Exxon would be kind enough to clean up their little oil spills. But to my surprise, they're really not too into the idea.

There's another meeting November 9th. If the free snack table is half as good as it was last night, you'd be a fool not to attend.
Each Future World pavilion was initially sponsored by a corporation who helped fund its construction and maintenance in return for the corporation's logos appearing prominently throughout the pavilion. For example, Universe of Energy was sponsored by Exxon, and The Land was sponsored by Kraft, then Nestlé. Each pavilion contains a posh "VIP area" for its sponsor with offices, lounges, and reception areas hidden away from regular park guests. In the years since the park's opening, however, some sponsors have decided that the branding wasn't worth the cost of sponsorship and have pulled out, leaving some of the pavilions without sponsors. Disney prefers to have sponsors helping to pay the bills, so pavilions without sponsors have an uncertain future. After General Electric left Horizons in 1993, it closed for a couple of years, then re-opened temporarily while neighboring attractions were renovated. Horizons closed permanently in January 1999 and was demolished in the summer of 2000 to make room for the opening of Mission: SPACE in 2003. MetLife abandoned Wonders of Life in 2001 and that area is closed. Test Track is sponsored by General Motors, Imagination! is sponsored by Eastman Kodak, and Mission: SPACE is sponsored by Hewlett-Packard. Spaceship Earth was sponsored by Bell System from 1982 to 1984, then AT&T (Bell System's parent company, following the Bell System Divestiture) from 1984 until 2003. It was not sponsored between 2003 and 2005. It is now sponsored by Siemens.
The Greenpeace Thermal Airship A.E. Bates flies over the Dallas, Texas area as part of a campaign confronting Exxon before its upcoming shareholder meeting on May 31st. The annual shareholder meeting in Texas is the perfect opportunity to hold the company accountable for its harmful endeavor of an oil state and oil diplomacy.

Decent example of an early 1960's station which started out as a HUMBLE in 1961 and switched to the ENCO brand the following year as did all Humble stations in TX, OK, NM and AZ; selling ENCO (regular) and ENCO EXTRA gasolines out of three or four pumps under the canopy on the right hand side, along with ENCO EXTRA and ENCO UNIFLO motor oils, plus ATLAS tires, batteries and accessories. It was one of four stations in Tucumcari where motorists could pull in to PUT A TIGER IN YOUR TANK! (ENCO EXTRA gasoline).
The doors on the left were service bays for washing, lubrication, tires, minor repairs and other services. Above the service bays read the words "Happy Motoring!" In 1972, this station made the name change to EXXON as did all other ESSO and ENCO stations in the U.S.
Like so many other service stations along U.S. 66 through Tucumcari, business went down following the completion of I-40 to the south in 1981 and ultimately shut down a few years later. Today, there are no EXXON stations to be found in Tucumcari or the immediate surrounding area.

Self Service Gas Station
Updated note on 02/13/2010: In the Los Angeles Times over the last year, there has been several articles about the giant oil companies and how they are either getting rid of their retail operations or selling them off to another party.
Chevron (Chevron Texaxo), Mobil (Exxon Mobile) and Union 76 (76 Conoco Phillips) are three giants that come to mind. Some of things that I have read were Conoco Phillips has sold their retail operations to a thrid party, and Chevron is exitng certain markets.
Finally, Exxon Mobil was down sizing and exiting markets, but it was not clear where or which brands.
In Southern California, several years ago, prior to the EXXON Mobil merger, Mobil was the major player and EXXON had just re-enteered the Southern California market by taking over WORLD Gasoline Stations. All the original EXXON full service Gasoline Stations had been closed for several years and rebranded or closed by EXXON upon leaving the Southern California market.
That is probably the reason why there are two tiers of types of stations run by EXXON Mobil around here, Mobil regular full/self serve auto repair/convenience store Gasolind Stations and Exxon has mini marts or self serve Gas Stations, no full service EXXONS or ones with auto repair.

This station was located in the 1200 block of West Tucumcari Blvd. (Route 66) on the city's west side and did a great business for many years until Interstate 40 bypassed the town.
