An extra RISW makes its way back to Rock Island after servicing industries in Wilton and Durant overnight with IAIS SD38-2 152. Below, CPKC's 2-261 works its way north along the Mississippi River with the mid-train DPU exiting the frame.

CN 3318 waits at Lakeside for Stack Brothers to re-open the main after a wayward driver got caught up in it

It seems like they grabbed whatever was available in Oak Island Yard for this extra OISE. The train is passing Ridgefield Park Station; note that the canopy on the Susquehanna side remained intact as of this date. C30-7A 6578 is unique in that it lost its red FRA marker lights after some nose damage was repaired. Here it features a "standard" GE nose with small class lights.

An NJ Transit equipment extra is shoved east through Hillside behind a pair of geeps. Today, 4149 is out of service and 4210 is the Erie heritage unit.

Engineer Larry St. Martin has a good set on his train as he rolls down the hill into the sag where the SOO crosses the Millecoquins River east of Engadine on April 25, 1978. 707 is working an extra west with 45 cars on a bright spring morning. There's still traces of snow to be found in shadowed areas in the wood even though we are approaching May.

Unter der Woche gibt es im Zillertal auch spezielle Holzzüge für die Fa. Binderholz in Fügen. Lok VL23 von der Steiermärkischen Landeseisenbahn mit dem morgendlichen Zug bei Schlitters.

Extra treat

During the week, there are also special timber trains in the Zillertal for the Binderholz company in Fügen. Locomotive VL23 from the Styrian State Railway with the morning train near Schlitters.

I Need Extra time .. :}

Extra 493, a Trains Magazine photo charter special, arrives back at Durango after spending 2 days putting on a show for the participates. While from an accuracy perspective, the K-37's never actually saw service on the Silverton Branch, seeing one in the speed lettering & on the point of a mixed train definitely won't have me leave my camera down. Also, getting to shoot it passing a K-36 switching out the yard ain't too bad either. 9-3-21

A rare Sunday extra job out of Lansing, running as U305, is departing Ensel Yard. The crew will take their pair of SD40-3s and 70+ cars east to Howell, where the train will be left for the Great Lakes Central to pick up. The old bracket mast on the right held a searchlight, once upon a time.

MC 2011 leads the MBRRE extra down the hill in New Bedford. MC GP9RM 2008 was trailing. The MBRRE chartered this train to go down the lines being rebuilt for the South Coast Rail Project.

Working an industry south of Mason, Michigan we find Adrian & Blissfield GP9 1751 with SD45 carbody 821 in nice early morning light. Many thanks to "TP" for the heads up with this Saturday am "extra" run to Jackson complete with white flags.

Lens Airshow - 2014

This was a very low tide captured before a lightning storm on the Yorke Peninsula SA. The luminous spread on the horizon is Adelaide.

This is the third shot I have posted of this cosmos but this one has a little extra!

This Amish was hauling two extra horses, not sure why....

Ferry Point Park, the Bronx

You just never know what you will find on the streets of Detroit.

Normally in March I do a trip to Australia and if I get a chance, I head to Port Campbell on the Victoria coast where - if the conditions are right - you can see this sort of stuff at night. Sadly, I didn't make the trip this year but here's a photo (a stitch of several photos actually) of the Milky Way from the bottom of the Gibson Steps from 12 months ago.

Orion is on the right. Gog and Magog (and the Magellanic Clouds) are in the centre. The core of the Milky Way is on the left.

Enjoy.

Happy weekend, all! Go and be your extraordinary selves.

Toulouse Airshow 2016 (France)

Extra 2124 North behind Seaboard Coast Line U30C 2124 and GP40 1520 and 1617 departs Collier Yard, Petersburg, Virginia, USA, 12 May 1979.

Looks almost like a brand new loco in the late 70's. But it's not! 44 100 after a major overhaul in Poduyane depot is on a test run with local train 20213. For a precaution in a case of a failure of the repaired loco (which occur very often :) ), the train has another locomotive - 61 003 of BDZ Cargo, which can serve the train to the final station.

September, 2013:

BNSF #8262 leads a westbound rack train through Flagg Center on the C&I. #8262 was one of 25 SD75Ms delivered to BNSF immediately after the 1996 BN-ATSF merger. Rated at 4,300 horsepower, the SD75Ms were a more powerful version of the SD70M; only 76 models were produced.

With new ES44C4s arriving in 2014, the unit was renumbered to #262 and was ultimately rebuilt at Mid-America.
