Extra ...extra......read all about it. Wait, maybe not, apparently the crew on this westbound POSE with mixed B&M and D&H EMDs have used all available newspapers to shield the sun and seal the cracks in the door to make the trip to Deerfield manageable. B&M 313 leading POSE is passing Tyters interlocking in Athol, MA on a cold January day in 1982. Robert C. Barnett photo SC collection.

A CPR extra west works upgrade near Campbellville, Ontario behind M630 4573 and two C424's on May 27, 1979.
SOO plow extras weren't all that common up here in the Eastern Upper Peninsula and some years only a couple would operate depending on the snow pack and how effective the plow equipped units managed to keep the track clean. Usually when they did operate I couldn't do much with an eastbound plow as they tended to originate out of Gladstone/Marquette in the morning and by the time they made there way down to my area after all the work clearing sidings it would be dark or nearly dark. That only left me with westbounds to generally have a shot at. Normally geeps were the usual power as they were highly effective in snow conditions but I did catch a couple of plows over the years with GP35's of all things powering them. February 13, 1981 was one of the rare GP35 powered plow appearances as 726 shoved the Gladstone based Russell and Flanger set westbound out of Trout Lake.

A Sunday St Cloud local returns to Northtown on Monday, an extra.
Big power has appeared on the St Cloud local before, but it's not a common sight.
With temps finally above freezing (low 40s) melting has begun. Usually warm temps also bring clouds, but the sun held on just long enough for this one.
The normal weekday local with geeps would run later in the day, but I'll take the big extra.

Buona domenica
Some of the trees in Lassen National Park suffered from drought, heat or bug damage. Trees in this condition burn very easily - much of the eastern half of the park had already been burned in a huge forest fire. These days it is very common to find damaged trees in the western United States and Canada.
An early morning job running as Extra 774 west rips through Garnet with 774 leading 2230-A and only 11 cars on February 13, 1978. The SOO was burdened with more eastbound business than westbound at the time and about three evenings a week there would be an eastbound extra that would run with anywhere from 85-150 cars. This was business that couldn't be handled on daily freight 912 which was filled out to over 100 cars most days. Westbound business wasn't as heavy and the returning crew and power off the extra's would often have only a handful to 50 cars. The westbound extras normally did local work so 911 could be expedited but on this day it appears there was no local work just overflow off 911 with those big ACR chip battlewagons on the head pin.

Enveloped in remote Northern Ontario forest, an ONR ballast extra makes it's presence known with the venerable GMD SD40-2 putting on quite the performance. Just like when the '40 was fresh out of the shops in London a caboose brings up the tail.
I tried hard to get a comp of this beautiful falls but the light behind was too harsh to shoot the top of the falls. I opted for a closer in shot cutting off the top of the falls leaving it kind of mysterious !! Sometimes it's what you can't see....Kris
