For almost 40-years the HST has been the prime mover of passengers on express services in many parts of Britain and it continues to be considered by many to be the saviour of the former BR passenger network. First Great Western utilises 58 HST sets and apart from ongoing modernisation all are virtually identical, the only downside to this is that the few named workings the company operates look identical to the un-named ones, so naming may be considered a futile exercise. One such named working is pictured here on 30 August 2014, ‘The Torbay Express’ running alongside the River Teign with its next stop at Newton Abbot about 10-minutes hence, the service is 1C78, the 10.35 Paddington to Paignton.

The Glacier Express is a train route through the Swiss Alps that is a functional and practical part of the national railway system, yet is at the same time targeted to sight-seers. The passenger cars have very large panoramic windows, and skylights running down either edge of the roof to make it easier to take in all the tall views the Alps have to offer. There are a few recorded bits of travel-guide-type narrative that play at certain key points of the ride, and they try to sell you guidebooks and other souvenirs on route.
I was sorely tempted to buy a guidebook---I always want to know exactly where I am at any point in any trip, including on planes---but I had bought a 1:250,000 Hallwag atlas at the Basel SBB to try to follow along the old-fashioned way.
The full length of the Glacier Express route is 151 miles long, and takes over seven hours. I opted to take only the central four-hour chunk, whose beginning and end points were closer to the places I had to begin and end my day. Even so, I had a couple of hours worth of train rides on either end of my Glacier Express ride, so I was signed up to spend 11 or 12 hours on trains on this, my last day in Europe.

Express Travels NXI9005 leaves Manchesters dingy Chorlton Street coach station with a service for Colne. The registartion was originally carried by a Plaxton Expressliner (basically a 3500 kitted out for NatEx) but relinquished its plate when its National Express days had ended. The plate was then transfered to this Paramount 3200 whose Rapide days were about to end. It would soon visit the paint shops to recieve the new Express Shuttle livery incorporating a grey skirt and put out to grass on the 060 service linking Liverpool with Manchester.

Pizza Express, Scarborough. New lens try-out - useful for capturing buildings within a narrow street location, the downside is the inevitable distortion. Newly opened, the Pizza Express has too many signs, posts and street furniture in front unless you get really close.

these Bedford YRQ's carry the bodies of the rival coach builder back in the 70's, DNT174L was delivered new to Clun Valley Motors and carries Plaxton Elite ll body and XUJ489K new to Jones of Market Drayton has the Express vesion of the Viceroy, both these where built to a goverment grant scheme which enabled operators to up grade their fleet as long as the vehicle was used on service work as well as coach dities hence the wide doors.
