The daylily is an amazingly low-maintenance perennial. It’s virtually disease-free, pest-free, and drought-resistant; it’s also not picky about soil quality. Plus, the flower has a long bloom period! Here’s how to plant and care for daylilies in your garden, as well as how to easily propagate them for more plants!
About Daylilies
The daylily’s botanical name, Hemerocallis, comes from the Greek hemera (“day”) and kallos (“beauty”). The name is appropriate since each flower lasts only one day! However, each scape has 12 to 15 buds on it, and a mature plant can have 4 to 6 scapes, which is why the flower seems to bloom continuously.
Originally from Asia, these plants have adapted so well that many of us think of them as natives. Imagine the excitement of a 16th-century explorer cruising the Orient and finding these gorgeous plants! European gardeners welcomed daylilies into their gardens, and when early colonists sailed for the New World, daylilies made the crossing with them.
Despite their name, daylilies are not “true lilies” and grow from fleshy roots. True lilies grow from onion-like bulbs and are of the genus Lilium, as are Asiatic and Oriental lilies. In the case of daylilies, leaves grow from a crown, and the flowers form on leafless stems—called “scapes”—which rise above the foliage.
There are thousands of beautiful daylilies to choose from. Combine early, midseason, late blooming varieties, and repeat bloomers to have daylilies in flower from late spring through the first frost of fall. If you see a height listed alongside a daylily variety, this refers to the length of the scape. Some can reach 6 feet tall!

These Daylilies were photographed at Pashley Manor Gardens. Then in late summer our Dahlia Days event transforms the gardens once more with bountiful, brightly coloured dahlias in every border and pot.

Have you catch it? I was resisting the temptation to join the train this season, no pun intended :) Work hours and feeling a bit lazy lately didn’t help either. After spending 4h in the cold last night I was happy I didn’t come back home empty handed but I kept thinking why do I do this to myself! Final frame is the blend of the few different exposures for dynamic range and clean noise free image. What do you think?
Milwaukee Road 261 traversing the Minnesota Prairie Line (on jointed rail) on day one of two trips on the TC&WR.
Here the train is just south of Hamburg, MN, and at this particular location, the air horn was used.
Lots of fans flocked to many locations to document one of 261's few outings. With limited time left until the boiler time expires, capitalizing on opportunities like this were a must.
In all, 12 passenger cars filled with riders experienced a lifetime memory. If not for the date of 2025, this could've just as well been the morning Hiawatha on the old Milwaukee Road. Speaking of the date, despite the calendar saying "October" the high temperature of 91 degrees suggested otherwise.
The container ship Callao Express being loaded at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg, Germany, which is a container handling terminal located in the Altenwerder quarter.

Così si può riassumere il Tenda Express, ovvero un treno d'agenzia che ogni anno (ad eccezione del 204 e 2015) parte da Zurigo, raggiunge la riviera Ligure di Ponente e torna in Svizzera passando per la linea del Tenda. Un'occasione ghiotta per noi appassionati che, sfruttando un agiornata meteorologicamente perfett, abbiamo "rincorso" il treno per tutta la vallata!

Durch einen sumpfigen Abschnitt des Osnabrücker Landes führt 78 468 ihren hübschen Museumszug, allerdings in eher gemäßigtem "Express"-Tempo. In dieser dünn besiedelten Landschaft wirkt die ehemals preußísche T18 wie aus der Zeit gefallen.
BR D1935 (47805), working the 1Z49 Slough Shrewsbury Saphos Trains Welsh Marches Express, is seen passing through All Stretton.
Stämpfli Express, the world’s largest rowing boat, made in Switzerland.. 144 feet long and seating 24. They were only 20 rowers :( for this shot. They were at Jordan Lake.

The TranzAlpine is a lovely train with big picture windows and comfortable seats, while outside the scenery is sublime.

New-paint Amtrak 75, running about 20 minutes late, leads train #1105, the westbound Winter Park Express, through Arvada, Colorado, at 07:45, December 20, 2024. This is the first seasonal run of the popular ski train, which started earlier this year and will soon have more than the five cars shown here. The train carries skiers from Denver to the Winter Park Resort, about a two-hour journey.

Despite the camera shake this has always been one of my favourite photos. I was twelve when I took it on an old box camera. And it is my first railway photo.
This was the last week of the through trains from the North running over the S & D.
The yard foreman used to send us away sometimes, but we always came back!

Bernina Express in the Swiss Alps.
Crossing the Alps in the Bernina Express certainly is one of the most spectacular ways to do it. Along the way, the Bernina Express rolls over the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct, the signature structure of the Rhaetian Railway and the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Altogether the train passes through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges on its way from Chur to Tirano. Travellers are treated to marvellous sights during their journey, like the Montebello curve with a view of the Bernina massif, the Morteratsch glacier, the three lakes Lej Pitschen, Lej Nair and Lago Bianco, the Alp Grüm and the Brusio Circular Viaduct.

La voiture Corail française qui était également présente dans le convoi pendant sa tournée était à ce moment restée en région parisienne.

This is a re-edit of an image I took back in 2016. These two ladies were on the rooftop park in downtown KC. I was shooting around them minding my own business when they approached and asked for their picture to be taken. From that point on, I knew I had free range to snap away as I walked the perimeter of this little hidden gem of a park.

In August 2000, my wife and I made a trip across Canada on the American Orient Express (AOE) from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Montreal, Quebec. The train traveled mostly over CN rails, stopping at various locations for sightseeing or servicing. Two CN motors and an Amtrak F40 were our power for this part of the journey. In this scene, the train is stopped for servicing and some leg-stretching at Capreol, Ontario, on August 17, 2000. Our assigned AOE sleeping car was the BERLIN, which now rolls as a private car for Patrick Henry Creative Promotions of Houston, Texas, becoming the third car operating under that banner.
SRC based WAP-4 loco - 22318 showed up with Yesvantpur (YPR) bound 12245 (Howrah-Yesvantpur) Duronto Express at its tow !!

The north american coyote... coy, clever, cunning, sly and apparently used to free handouts from passing vehicles. I work in the oilsands in northern Alberta. I see coyotes almost every day. I had some spare time yesterday so I stopped on the side of the road when I saw this one. It watched me for a few minutes then ran up to the vehicle... waiting for its free handout. I shot him instead... that is with my camera.

The Impf-Express ("Vaccination Express") circulating as a regular Strassenbahn line in front of the Südbahnhof while I was waiting for my bus to the office. I loved the driver's smile, too bad the windshield's glare hides it.
The idea of the Impf Express is that you can hop in, get your corona shot and get of a couple of stations later. I find the idea of wanting to get an injection in a moving vehicle rattling along the tracks kind of odd. Maybe their doctors are that good. Or they just wait for the stops.
