The colliery was closed by British Coal, as the National Coal Board had become, in 1993 and reopened by RJB Mining (now UK Coal) in April 1994, the licence to dig for coal being limited to the Yard seam which is located at a depth of 957 yards (870 m). The colliery was finally closed in April 2003.
Clipstone Colliery has been closed for almost ten years but the Grade II-listed 220ft headstocks remain standing.

A labourer collects salt using his bare hands. The cut on the left hand burned but being on daily wage he simply had to work to fill his stomach.
Saltpan workers labour 8 to 10 hours a day under the blazing sun for a paltry income. With no proper gear, not even footwear, to protect them from the saline environment they are exposed to eye problems (including blindness) and skin diseases. All for the sake of an apathetic landlord.
