A march against the exploitation of and racism toward international students in Australia that the governments (both state and federal) continue to allow to exist. International and Australian students from NSW universities (such as Newcastle, UTS, Macquarie, UNSW and Sydney University) rallied together, marching from Sydney University to UTS and on to NSW Parliament House, asking for the government to intervene and change legislation that allows international students to be taken advantage of.

Some basic rights like abolishing the 20-hour work week limit and providing student travel concessions to international students were demanded in chants and songs. At a deeper level though, the protesters are demanding an end to the systematic racism and exploitation of international students, who are increasingly treated more as a means to profit than as students to educate.

France, Paris, 2017-12-08. For this edition of the Telethon (huge French event to help disabled people), tightrope walkers have installed and crossed a highline between the Eiffel Tower and Trocadero. The event is broadcast live on France 2 and TV5 Monde. It was a unique feat and a world record because the strap was almost 700 meters long. It was the first time in the world that such a long line was installed and crossed in a city. Last June, they broke the world record of highline at Navacelles, crossing a line of 1662 meters long, barefoot. Photograph by Fred MARIE / Collectif DR.

Ankarana National Reserve, near Antsiranana, northern Madagascar.

Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area in northern Madagascar created in 1956. It is a small, partially vegetated plateau composed of 150-million-year-old middle Jurassic limestone. With an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 millimetres (79 in), the underlying rocks have been eroded to produce caves and feed subterranean rivers - a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion and exploitation.

This was at our first campsite in Ankarana.

We hung all edibles in carrier bags, as there were animals that might have raided any food. We also checked our shoes and clothes before putting them in, in case of spiders or scorpions.

The ring-tailed vontsira (Galidia elegans), locally still known as the ring-tailed mongoose, is a euplerid in the subfamily Galidiinae, a carnivoran native to Madagascar. It is the only species in the genus Galidia.

The ring-tailed vontsira is relatively small but is the largest member of the subfamily Galidiinae. Its body is long and slender, and the rounded head has a pointed snout. The body is a dark red colour and the feet are black. As the name implies, its bushy tail is covered with black and red rings and is similar to the red panda.

Ring-tailed vontsira are very agile, and good climbers. They are quite playful and are active during the day. Their habitat consists of humid forests. Their diet is mostly of small mammals, invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and eggs, but they occasionally eat insects and fruit.

The population of ring-tailed vontsira has decreased by 20% during the period 1989-1999 due to habitat loss. Another problem is competition with the small Indian civet (Viverricula indica).

On Thursday 30 October 2025, officers from the City of Manchester Central district, alongside partnership agencies, focussed on several businesses along Stockport Road, in Longsight, and surrounding areas as part of a national operation cracking down on organised criminality on local high streets.

Operation Machinize, is the ongoing NCA-coordinated operation to tackle money laundering and criminal use of cash-intensive businesses.

The day saw teams of officers attend several businesses with partners including Manchester City Council Trading Standards, Immigration Enforcement officers, Regional Illicit Tobacco Officer, the Department of Health and Social Care, Housing Compliance & Enforcement, and a detection dog officer from Wagtail.

Teams visited businesses including convenience shops, beauty salons, barbershops, a bakery and more.

The visits tackle issues such as health and safety hazards, unlicensed products being sold over the counter, the sale of illicit cigarettes and vapes, immigration crime, money laundering, drug dealing and exploitation.

Vulnerable people are often exploited through these types of criminality, and the proceeds of crime are often used to fund further criminal activities.

A detection dog was on hand to help find hidden compartments concealing illegal commodities.

In one premises, a large concealment was discovered behind a hydraulic wall filled with illicit cigarettes. On further inspection, several more cartons of illicit cigarettes were found hidden behind foam ceiling tiles.

As a result of the day, three men were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences and breach of bail conditions.

Officers recovered various cartons of illicit cigarettes, disposable vapes and tobacco products to the total of £30,256.60.

Two businesses were referred to our civil penalties team for a fine of up to £60,000 per worker, and six businesses will be referred to HMRC for sanctions of up to £10,000.

Meanwhile, the Housing and Compliance team served two Emergency Prohibition Orders on flats above two retail premises.

A referral will be made to Environmental Health, and to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in relation to some products found in a beauty shop.

PC Francesca Hooley, City of Manchester Central District Intelligence Unit said: “Yesterday we held a proactive operation, as part of a national intensification period led by the NCA, alongside our partner agencies to tackle criminality in our local high streets.

“The day yielded successful results with three arrests made by Immigration Enforcement Officers and seizures to the value of over £30,000.

“As a result of this work, we have removed large quantities of harmful substances; drugs, illegal vapes, illicit cigarettes, that otherwise would have be sold to our local communities, putting people at risk.

“Our work does not stop here, and we will continue to protect our communities from the harms of illegal products, while ensuring those involved in this criminality are held accountable.

“We take any information we receive seriously, so I urge people to continue to provide Greater Manchester Police with information, and we will continue to investigate all aspects of this criminality and act upon it accordingly.”

If you suspect that a business is involved in any illegal activities, you can report them to Trading Standards at Consumer Help and Advice | Chartered Trading Standards Institute UK

If you are concerned about criminal activity within your area, you can report this to us directly on 101 or by using our online report tool at www.gmp.police.uk

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted in confidence via 0800 555 111.
