Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode

Robin Rhode imagines Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung (Expectation) in Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode. In partnership with Performa15. Composed in 1909, Erwartung takes the unusual form of a one-act monodrama for a solo soprano, accompanied by a large orchestra. For Rhode, this atonal opera about love, loss, and lamentation, recalled the many hardships experienced by women in South Africa during and after the fall of Apartheid. Originally set in the moonlit, wilderness of the forest, Rhodeâs reproduction of Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode interprets Times Square itself to be a contemporary forest filled with light emanating from the electronic billboards instead of the moon. The performance takes place in a huge aria with just one soprano and non-speaking performer carrying out the opera, with the sights and sounds of Times Square acting as a Greek Chorus in the background.

The #3MichelinStars restaurant #Quince in #SanFrancisco did not disappoint—it exceeded every expectation we had and then some.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed into a world where elegance, hospitality, and culinary artistry existed in perfect harmony. We have had the privilege of dining at several Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, including another three-star establishment in the Bay Area, and while there are similarities in service standards and restaurant aesthetics, Quince stood in a class of its own. Every detail seemed thoughtfully curated to make guests feel not merely accommodated, but genuinely honored and celebrated.

The evening became even more memorable when #ChefMichaelTusk himself graciously spent time with us. He spoke with us casually, warmly, and without pretension, as though it were the most natural thing in the world for one of America's most celebrated chefs to mingle among ordinary food lovers. I must admit, I was completely in fan-girl mode. Standing there, speaking with him, and taking a photograph together felt surreal. It was one of those moments where reality feels better than imagination.

The food was extraordinary. Every dish was a masterwork of texture, flavor, aroma, and presentation. Each bite revealed layers of complexity while remaining beautifully balanced. One of the highlights was the addition of caviar as a side accompaniment, enhancing the umami profile of the dishes and creating remarkable depth and richness throughout the meal.

What truly touched us, however, was the generosity of the people. Juan, our host from Mexico, treated us less like paying customers and more like cherished friends. When we shared stories about dining at Pujol in Mexico City and Central in Peru, the conversation sparked something special. To our surprise, Juan and Chef Tusk gifted us a #RelaisAndChateaux travel book to inspire our next culinary adventure.

As if the evening had not already been magical enough, they sent us home with exclusive limoncello from #Cotogna and a bottle of #BlancDeBlancsChampagne tucked into our to-go bag. We were overwhelmed by such kindness and generosity.

This was not simply dinner. It was one of those rare, once-in-a-lifetime experiences where exceptional food, extraordinary people, and heartfelt hospitality come together to create a memory that will last forever.

It is my greatest wish to return someday with my sister so she, too, can experience the finer things in life and witness the magic that places like Quince create.

The Laburnum Arch is ready to burst into bloom. The structure and expectation is worthy of photos at present, not quite so many people present

“The expectation is that this will turn around mid month. But right now, the state is in a bad place for a lot of different reasons, hospital staffing is the biggest reason. We’re under immense pressure.” ~Paul Thottingal, MD
