Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode

Robin Rhode imagines Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung (Expectation) in Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode. In partnership with Performa15. Composed in 1909, Erwartung takes the unusual form of a one-act monodrama for a solo soprano, accompanied by a large orchestra. For Rhode, this atonal opera about love, loss, and lamentation, recalled the many hardships experienced by women in South Africa during and after the fall of Apartheid. Originally set in the moonlit, wilderness of the forest, Rhodeâs reproduction of Arnold Schönberg's Erwartung - A Performance by Robin Rhode interprets Times Square itself to be a contemporary forest filled with light emanating from the electronic billboards instead of the moon. The performance takes place in a huge aria with just one soprano and non-speaking performer carrying out the opera, with the sights and sounds of Times Square acting as a Greek Chorus in the background.

With every reasonable expectation of failure, I thought I'd have a crack at the Soap Bubble tonight (better known by the catchy title 'PN G75.5+1.7') - up close and personal with the C9.25. This is an example of an object I'm happy to record - at all, rather than devote my life to, and on that measure I'm happy enough with the result. It says it all about how amateur astronomy has come on in recent times: discovered by amateurs with a 160mm AstroPhysics instrument in 2007/8. This one: C9.25/0.63FR, AZEQ6, Atik460EX, Celestron OAG/ZWO ASI120MM-S, Baader 4 x 1800s Ha + 2 x 1800s OIII. Basic processing in Nebulosity/Photoshop Elements. Horrible blue Baader OIII halos. Very pleased with how the AZEQ6/C9.25/OAG arrangement is performing.

For the avoidance of doubt, the nebula is that very faint circular thing just to the right of centre. Some of the stars appear to have their own bubbly halos round them; that is just an optical defect in one of the filters.

This little tourist steam loco makes the 2km trip from the Semaphore Jetty along the coast to Point Malcolm (Fort Glanville and the nearby Caravan Park) and back regularly on weekends (40 minutes round trip). Sadly the real steam engines stopped running in 1978. Bill is a reminder of the romantic history of motive steam in the area.

"Bill" is a 457 mm gauge and is owned and operated by the National Railway Museum/Volunteers (Built by the Port Adelaide Enfield and Charles Sturt Councils and operated by the National Railway Museum volunteers, its a specially designed steam locomotive)

A LIFELONG love of all things rail led Bill Edmonds to volunteer to drive a steam train along the Semaphore beachfront 17 years ago. When he retired from the railyards in 1993, he could not imagine a life without trains so jumped at the chance to drive the Semaphore Steam Train.

It was great to hear the sound of it's whistle and see the smoke and steam.

In reply to this week's challenge, expectation, i.e. what will happen next? Yup, I'm not so imaginative.

A dear friend. Not the first photo taken so the look is a bit strained. And the flash sucks. And the framing. But I still love this pic. If only that little bugger would care to enter the world soon! He/she/it is nearly two weeks overdue in this pic.

strange to sit and cuddle plush toy and think about him, wait for him. He always disappears somewhere and so rarely comes and hugs you. And you want him to touch you, and so expect them. Waiting, warming imaginary warm plush dog, though it is your most loyal friend, and may be because of one whose warm so you need to just not there.

Theatrication is formed of young performers from Derbyshire aged between 18-24 and a considerably older director. Expectation is their debut production. Mixing dance, physical theatre and drama, 'expectation' reflects on the issues and themes affecting young people as they mature and become part of a society that is often confusing, demanding and difficult to navigate. "The company members of Theatrication delivered a tour de force ensemble performance in their inaugural devised show 'Expectation'. Each performance was fully crafted and woven into a highly engaging synergous whole..." Clare Limb: Déda. The production is a recipient of an unltd* award. PHYSICAL THEATRE

Ja, die Manege war sein Reich,

er sprang und tanzte wie ein Kind,

es war, als ob er immer lachte.

Doch erst am Abend legte er

ganz traurig seine Maske ab,

es war, als ob er immer weinte.
