I've been unable to find much documentation about a Black Skimmer's commitment to its mate. From what I have observed, it appears that they are monogamous and very dedicated to each other and their family. In this image, the female is sitting on eggs while her mate stands very close by. When intruders come too close, both the male and female will become agitated and call to warn them off. Keeping a low profile and respectful distance from the ropes is critically important during this stage. Once the eggs have hatched, the male will become very busy hunting for food to feed their young brood. I hope to witness more of this behavior tomorrow morning when I return for a very quick trip to the beach. July 27, 2018

These train tracks lead to the malt processing factory which is about a half mile north of this location. The RR crews are usually very good about keeping the tracks clear, as trains use them two or three times a day. The mounds of snow from street clearance have frozen into icy barriers on each side of the street. What will happen next remains to be seen.

never expect that the ground was so mudly that I slip and twisted my leg...but it so worth all the pain and effort for my walk.

[EXPLORED] June 4th 2013

Didn't expect to get explored, thank you all so much!

I had my last exam on Monday and I am FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE for a whole week until we go back for the next year! (but that shouldn't be too bad). To top it all off, the weather in the UK has been absolutely brilliant, so warm and GOLDEN HOURS AAh.

I've missed photography, and glad I can get back in to it after exams. Model is Meg.

When you go on a 8 day road trip to capture the fall colors and aspens you would think your best shots are going to be of the aspens, right?!?! Nope. This and another waterfall shot may just be my favorites. I haven't used my neutral density filter in a long time, but this area was perfect. We actually went to go find another waterfall and found this one as well. I wasn't expecting such good water flow after such a dry year. The fall colors also helped add a little more color to the scene.

didn't expect the firework to start so early?

I wasn't expecting this shoot to go ahead. It was meant to be horrible weather today. This meant that, when I rolled out of bed at 11.15am this morning with a shoot scheduled for 12.30pm I had to, as the expression goes, 'haul arse'. 75 slightly blurred minutes later I was sitting in the back of my van with a double shot coffee in one hand and a copy of Frankie in the other at the scheduled meeting place, and looking foward to the shoot. Andy rocked up in his van, got out, we shook hands, and he pulled out his swords.

Yes, swords. At this point I was already stoked.

Strobist/continuing the story: I really wanted to have light like in an Ang Lee film. Unfortunately, I don't know how it's done, so I guessed (and I'm going to have to watch them again, and take notes). I just spent a lot of time playing, but most of the stuff I shot was with the 430EX about a stop brighter than the 285HV, in this case right and left respectively. I was shooting mostly at 1/200th to 1/250th, just to get as little motion blur as I could, but getting enough ambient in. A lot of the time I was wishing for a third flash too, but I think that will have to wait for a while (unless my tax return is better than I think it will be).

Wind of Change, Scorpions

Even though a person expects this to be a spring time endeavour , it should still mean that there will be more 'little monarchs" in the future.

in our garden - Frankfurt-Nordend

Another one from Scalber Force, but this time the classic shot. Don’t get me wrong, I do like this one, but I’m always trying to see spectacular locations differently as to avoid the expected. If you haven’t been there, it’s a wonderful spot and when you are down in the canyon it feels like you are in a lost world. That is if there isn’t other photographers there looking for the same experience!

Or - You dress me as an elf AND expect me to look into the camera!

Spring is still in the air for the Sparrows in the garden. We can expect the fourth brood within a few weeks!

The second trial with Sigma 1.4 TC + 150-600 mm 5-6.3. Not as successful as I expected, but I think this is the best it can do with my system on a monopod, low light, and fast-moving object.

My day started off earlier then expected since I had to drop off Mindy at Bart for work. Afterwards, headed back home to clean my room, watch television and play Modern Warfare 3. After picking up Mindy from work (Bart that is) we decided to try McDonald's Mcbites. To be honest, their alright, reminds me of a smaller popcorn chicken. Today was a pretty relaxing day, possibly a more boring entry, hopefully tomorrow something better or greater is planned.

Well, I didn't expect to see a crew member climb up onto the wings of a PBY Catalina, pull out a dipstick, and check the engine oil before winding up the engines - kind of like you would do at a self serve gas station. It makes perfect sense, of course. It's all what you're used to seeing, I suppose.

The aircraft named "Mary K" from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum was visiting a local "Wings and Wheels" event. It's distinctive profile was a joy to see - and hear - the sound of those two 1200 hp Pratt & Whitney engines is unmistakable.

Astronomers found something they weren't expecting at the heart of the globular cluster NGC 6397: a concentration of smaller black holes lurking there instead of one massive black hole.

Globular clusters are extremely dense stellar systems, which host stars that are closely packed together. These systems are also typically very old — the globular cluster at the focus of this study, NGC 6397, is almost as old as the universe itself. This cluster resides 7,800 light-years away, making it one of the closest globular clusters to Earth. Due to its very dense nucleus, it is known as a core-collapsed cluster.

At first, astronomers thought the globular cluster hosted an intermediate-mass black hole. These are the long-sought "missing link" between supermassive black holes (many millions of times our Sun's mass) that lie at the cores of galaxies, and stellar-mass black holes (a few times our Sun's mass) that form following the collapse of a single massive star. Their mere existence is hotly debated. Only a few candidates have been identified to date.

CPKC train 40B, the 'Final Spike' steam tour, is seen approaching Ludlow, MO on former Milwaukee Road trackage on the afternoon of May 11, 2024. The train is easing through a maintenance zone where quite a bit of track work is taking place.

When CP and KCS first announced their intent to merge in 2021, I would not have guessed the revival of CP's dormant steam program would be one of the first tangible results of the union, but here we are, as the 2816 and its entourage journey from Calgary to Mexico City to commemorate the first anniversary of the creation of CPKC.

Again I found an old photo.

Several months ago, I put almost the same, only with the guitar fretboard . Forgive me for that, but in last month, I have very little time on the photo. But next weekend expect really cool stuff!)

Men's Fraternity

Reject Passivity

Accept Responsibility

Lead Courageously

Expect God's Reward

Men's Fraternity: Authentic Manhood: Winning at Work & Home by Robert Lewis challenges men to step forward, meet their responsibilities, and establish their manhood. This study focuses on the chief responsibilities men have as husbands, fathers, and breadwinners. Two mirrors are presented to help men evaluate how they are doing in life: the mirror of work and career, and the mirror of home and family.

On a snowy and dreary evening, the HAT slowly descends Shoreham Hill with an ABA lashup... not something that I ever expected to see. The B unit was being tested after getting work done in St. Paul.

You might not expect to come upon a castle while visiting Spokane, but that is exactly what you will do if you visit the Spokane County courthouse. Most of us associate such architecture with romantic old castles in Europe, or perhaps something out of the world of Walt Disney or fairy tales. To find such a building in the center of a modern, growing regional hub city such as Spokane is a bit startling.

The courthouse is said to closely resemble two famous 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley of France, the Chateau de Chambord, built in 1519 and the Chateau d'Azay Le Rideau built in 1516. Many architects through the years have commented on the masterly replica of a 16th century French Renaissance design, its fine lines of style and proportion with regard to the towers and turrets, the sculpture, iron and brickwork which excel in pattern and craftsmanship. Detailed exterior trim such as shell patterns with wreaths and festoons and decorative arches are a few of the outstanding features of its design. The beautiful center tower, now lighted at night, is a masterpiece of detail in itself.

Happy Wing Wednesday!

I did not expect to see a Pacific Wren on St. Paul Island. This Pribilof subspecies is about 30% larger than the regular (mainland) species and has a longer bill. However, they sing as loud as any other Pacific Wren :). The are permanent resident on the Island. However, when the winter is very harsh, their population decreases substantially. We saw several of them in very good conditions so I have to assume that the last winter on the Island was kind to them. We were lucky. I saw reports from previous years visitors indicating they only saw one of these bird during their visit.

I hope to have some good news soon...

I wasn't quite expecting this kind of sunrise when I got up at 5:30am and took the drive down here, to St Michael's Mount, on Tuesday morning. It was windy but beautiful and with the terrible weather that has followed, I'm so glad I made the effort.

I was pretty excited to get out my 16-35mm and use it for the first time since loosing it in the Lake District. Thankfully it was found and is now safe and sound back where it belongs, on my camera!
