October 29, approaching the paradise...
Now, some weeks later, the weather goes wild... incredibly strong wind and not only rain but deluges... yesterday, after a visit in the seaport, I couldn't return to my little bay, because the roads were completely flooded and covered with soil and rocks... so I had to take a hotel room, and here I am... still waiting for the weather to calm down, but I'm fine and finally there is some peace and quiet to upload some photos of the journey and the first days/weeks on the island. :-)

Expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.
become a stranger
To need of pity
Or, if compassion be freely
Given out
Take only enough
Stop short of urge to plead
Then purge away the need.
Wish for nothing larger
Than your own small heart
Or greater than a star;
Tame wild disappointment
With caress unmoved and cold
Make of it a parka
For your soul.
Discover the reason why
So tiny human midget
Exists at all
So scared unwise
But expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.

You can plan to the best of your ability... but sometimes conditions don't live up to expectations. Last week I set out, hoping for a perfect sunrise, only to find the place shrouded in thick fog. After 30-40minutes, I was about to give up... then, there was the briefest of clearings, revealing a backlit Wallace Monument... within 5 minutes it was gone again.
Compare with how this place looked early summer
I caught this glimpse of the sunrise as I walked away from my carefully selected spot for a recent sunrise shoot. I was done for the morning, or so I thought. As I retraced my steps back across Blue Grass Island, I wanted a bit from the trail I took through the woods to explore a bit. Sun rays came and went across the side of my face they intertwined with the bare trees. I eventually turned left and noticed the crazy range between highlights and shadows. So I unpacked everything, set up the tripod and camera, and captured this photograph.
Back home later that morning, I gave it a black and white treatment just to experiment a bit. Black and white on a sunrise photograph? Sure, why not.
The final photograph gave me a lasting message from that cold morning shoot - expect the unexpected. I was happy with the photographs I had captured that morning and was heading back home when I found something I didn't expect to see. And editing the photograph in a way I normally wouldn't gave me a final result that I love.
So this photograph will always serve to remind me that, with photography, I should always expect the unexpected.

As expected lots of other photographers here at this well photographed location. We got lucky with some lovely mist across the lake and a reasonably sunrise which later turned the mist a really orange colour.
Never expected to see a yellow F50 here in Shek O, small chance for a red one as there is a right hand drive one here (unlicensed). A truly amazing day.
GATX 396 leads back from switching out cars at the WestRock warehouse in Camillus back during the heatwave a weekend ago. Nice to finally catch something moving on FGLK for once.
This is pretty easy.....the hard part is getting the smoke or halos. You just need to have patience and some strobes :). The smoke turn out here is totally unexpected.

HMM! This week's theme is 'Unexpected'.
I don’t do maternity portraits as often as I used to while I focus more on documentary projects. But when I do, I absolutely enjoy them. This mama’s beautiful energy made photographing her such a pleasure!
A Wild Turkey was not what I was expecting to add next to my list of birds eating winter fruit! Kind of a weird story here. I spotted a group of 15 or so Turkeys in a private residence WHILE filling my car up with gas. After I finished, I drove over to the house only to have the entire group run across the a few front yards. But they finally stopped in a new front yard and started scratching and eating something off the ground. Then one of the birds flew up into the tree itself and I realized at that point they were after crabapples! It was funny to watch two of the birds try and keep their balance on the skinny branches, while trying to reach the fruits. The rest of the group stayed below where there were already plenty of fallen ones, not to mention new ones being knocked down by the two birds above. Hennepin County, MN 12/22/21

"As the jazz notes swirled around the room like a delicate promise, his gaze fixated on a silhouette illuminated by the golden glow. She moved with a grace that echoed the rhythm, and he felt an irresistible pull. The young woman, her beaded dress whispering against the polished floor, approached him like a moth drawn to a flame. Her eyes, as green as the envy the evening had evoked, met his, and in that moment, the ballroom became their private universe. They glided across the floor in a dance that mirrored the ebb and flow of the jazz itself. The world outside their twirling figures faded away, leaving only the effervescent thrill of the moment. His hand, warm, rested on the small of her back, guiding her through a waltz of stolen glances and shared smiles. The champagne bubbles mirrored in their eyes as they lost themselves in the opulence of the night, a fleeting connection that felt as timeless as the echoes of Gatsby's own starlit soirees."

If you don't see me happy, you probably should know that's because I expect too much from you, and I want too much from you.

And I am really sorry guys for that I haven't got a chance to visit you back!
An SD75I pulls an empty grain train (X-ETTSPI) with 2 CP units trailing behind. Don't think I've ever seen these lead something other than manifests, so this was a nice surprise.
The skies looked pretty innocent when I headed out to the local road end. When I got there the wind was howling and the skies were spitting rain. I had to touch up the photo a bit to remove some rain drops. The best photos seem to come when you least expect it.

After 10 days of gloomy weather I expected more of the same on the first day of my weekend, Fri 4.24, however it turned out to be a spectacular day. As luck would have it I had chores to do and wouldn’t be able to get out for any pictures until Saturday. Looking at the weather forecasts it appeared I might be in luck as my weather app was showing another day of clear skies. As it turns out that is exactly what happened. After waking up and finishing up my final chores and did some checking and discovered the south freight out of Fairbanks was running very late. The train was re-crewed at Hurricane, MP 281.4, and had departed at 0830. It was currently 0915 and my goal was to catch the train at MP 206.4 as they emerged from the woods with Denali standing tall in the background. I live in South Anchorage, roughly at MP 105, so I needed to go north 101 miles before the freight traveled the 76 miles south to arrive at the same destination. By the time I left my house it was 0920. It was a calculated risk but I was fairly confident I could beat the train here. I also knew the train had to traverse a few slow orders so that was in my favor. Luck was on my side, but just barely, I arrived at my desired location at 1100 and the train rolled past at 1105. Pretty good timing I say. As this was the only train on the system, I headed for home. Of course that was the same direction the train was heading so I was able to capture a few more shots along the way. This shot shows Denali and Hunter with the train. Earlier I posted a shot with just Denali and the train. I think I like this shot a bit better. At 20’308 tall Denali stands tall and dominates the background.in either view.

Thought I might have caught this clean pair in the Otira valley for a few shots, but here he is already at Jacksons.

Ein Zufallsgast bei der Veranstaltung war diese NOHAB von Altmark Rail
Not expected but very welcome - this NOHAB (Altmark Rail)
We're expecting lots of rain tomorrow, and a flood watch has also been issued for our area for tomorrow because we are expected to be in the outer rainbands of Hurricane Idalia which is hitting Florida tonight and then passing on through to southern Georgia and South and North Carolina.
Our biggest concern for tomorrow, with all the rain, is trees falling and knocking down power lines. No power means no Flickr. And just not sure how long I can go without that!?!
So, right now we're trying to be chill, like Frodo here, and enjoy our air-conditioning, lights, and all the good things that come with power. LOL!
Visitors to Morano can expect to be transported to an era where the pace of life was dictated by the ringing of church bells and the rhythm of artisanal crafts. The town's atmosphere is charged with a magical quality, almost as if time has stood still, allowing modern-day explorers to soak in the rich cultural heritage that permeates every corner. These narrow, winding pathways, some chiseled into the very rock, ascend steeply, weaving through a tightly-knit tapestry of homes, religious edifices, and historical structures. The town's layout is a marvel of medieval urban planning, with houses, churches, monasteries, arches, portals, underpasses, stairways, and squares all interlocking in an intimate dance of stone and history. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or simply in search of Italy's lesser-known locales, Morano Calabro offers an experience that is as enriching as it is visually stunning.

The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in series hybrid vehicle to be produced by General Motors, expected to be launched as a 2011 model with production currently slated to begin in 2010. The Volt's propulsion system will be based on GM's new E-Flex platform.
Unlike current commercially available hybrids, the actual propulsion of the Volt is accomplished by the electric motor, as the internal combustion engine (ICE) is not mechanically connected to the wheels. With fully charged batteries, this electric power may be sourced exclusively from its onboard lithium-ion batteries, for up to 40 miles (64 km), a distance capable of satisfying the daily commute of 75% of Americans, which averages around 33 miles (53 km).
After 40 miles (64 km), the range of the Volt will need to be extended through the use of a small 4-cylinder ICE which drives a 53 kW generator. The electrical power from the generator is then sent to either the electric motor or the batteries, depending on the state of charge (SOC) of the battery pack and the power demanded at the wheels. The distribution is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle. This effectively extends the Volt's potential range to as much as 640 miles (1,030 km) on a single tank of fuel (which could be potentially extended for longer trips through conventional refueling).
The Volt's 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack can also be fully charged (technically ~85% SOC) by plugging the car into a 120-240VAC residential electrical outlet using the provided SAE J1772 compliant charging cord. No external charging station will be required.

Monday morning wake up knowing that youve got to go to school
Tell your mum what to expect, she says its right out of the blue
Do you went to work in debenhams, because thats what they expect
Start in lingerie, and doris is your supervisor
And the head said that you always were a queer one from the start
For careers you say you went to be remembered for your art
Your obsessions get you known throughout the school for being strange
Making life-size models of the velvet underground in clay
In the queue for lunch they take the piss, youve got no appetite
And the rumour is you never go with boys and you are tight
So they jab you with a fork, you drop the tray and go berserk
While your cleaning up the mess the teachers looking up your skirt
Youve been used, youre confused
Write a song, Ill sing along
Are you calm? settle down
Soon you will know that you are sane
Youre on top of the world again
Monday morning wake up knowing that youve got to go to school
Mum said she had little choice when she was young, so why should you?
Do you went to work in c&a, cause thats what they expect
Move to ladieswear and take a feel off joe the storeman
Tell veronica the secrets of the boy you never kissed
Shes got everything to gain cause shes a fat girl with a lisp
She sticks up for you when you get aggravation from the snobs
cause you cant afford a blazer and youre always wearing clogs
At the interval you lock yourself away inside a room
Heed of english gets you, asks you, what the hell do you think youre doing?
Do you think youre better then the other kids? well get outside.
Youve got permission, but youve got to make the bastard think hes right
