Excursion party makes a stop along the summit road on Mount Etna (SP 92, via Cassone) (Sicily, Italy).

ETNA EXCURSION - STOP 3

Our guide, Sebastiano Squillaci, stopped here for us to see the views in all directions, and to see the area where the 1792 lava flow started (not in this view). We are at about 1280 m a.s.l. here. The excursion was run by Geotours, who use geologist guides. Our guide is 4th from L, facing us, holding his information folder. Jill is 2nd from R with red rucsac. The company uses Land Rovers and tours can be booked direct from hotels in and around Catania, and people are picked up from their hotels. Our party included Italians, Canadians and Belgians (plus a Brit and a Bermudian of course). The guide spoke English. Our particular tour went only as far as the little tourist centre at Rifugio Sapienza close to the summit, but some longer tours include a short cable car ride above that, and a summit walk (conditions permitting).

LONDON - PARIS - CATANIA - ROME - LONDON ----- DAY 5

Photo from the fifth day of our crazy long distance rail trip from home (London) to Sicily. We spent the first day travelling from home in London to Paris, by Eurostar train, and were meant to the take an overnight train from Paris to Rome that same evening. But our Eurostar train out of London was badly delayed due to 'a fatality [unexplained - perhaps fortunately] on the train'. So we missed our onward connection to Rome and had an unexpected but happy second day in Paris. We left Paris that evening, on the equivalent Rome service arriving in Rome on our third day where we changed for our onward train, arriving in Catania (Sicily) that same evening. Our fourth day was our first full day in Sicily, and we spent this in the centre of Catania itself. We spent our fifth day on an excursion to Mount Etna run by GeoEtnaExplorer. We chose this tour company because the guides are geologists. Our particular tour went high up on the flanks on the summit, but not to the summit proper.

By the end of the whole holiday trip we had seen things and sites from ancient Greek time to modern, so the trip felt like a mini Grand Tour. Or given the rich mythology of Sicily, Etna and the Straits of Messina (Odysseus, the Cyclops, Scylla & Charybdis, etc.) perhaps our trip was like a modern mini Odyssey of our times. Odysseus took ten years to get home. It took us ten trains - but no monsters.

The Severn Valley Railway's class 108 DMU set was used for chartered trip by retired police officers from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth and back today; seen leaving Bridgnorth on it's return journey.

This was the largest SUV you could buy at the time of its release. Despite strong initial sales, rising gas prices turned customers in other directions and the Excursion went out of production in 2006 after just 7 years. An extended length Expedition replaced it.

Southern Railway steam excursion train - July 4, 1979. I was pretty sure I couldn't get a good picture of the lead diesel and the steam engine, so I concentrated on trying to get the steamer. Looking back, I kind of wish I had gotten the Chessie cat in the lead here. Who knew that Chessie cats would be as far removed as steam power, thirty one years later?

2002 ford excursion v10, flat black, 6 inch lift on 22s with 35 mud tires

Oh how we Europeans scoffed at the sheer vulgar bulk of the original Ford Excursion. Its typical North American excess and terrible fuel consumption were totally at odds with what we were driving and thought this would see the end of the SUV boom with some kind of backlash!

Well SUV's certainly haven't gone away and although the Excursion was still massive even by todays standards so have many of our SUV's and pick-up trucks too!

It was only a matter of time before Matchbox paid homage to this leviathan and here it is, debuting in the latest batch of Moving Parts. They certainly haven't dare skimp on metal content or proportions, both of which have needed to be particularly generous for the casting to look right.

Its actually quite a stunning diecast for its price point with glitzy chrome, shiny metallics and fantastic front and rear detailing.

Mint and boxed.

The car was built by the Budd Company and ran on the Great Northern Railway's Empire Builder train. The car was part of Great Northern's "View" series (1390-95) of dome lounge cars. The car became Burlington Northern No. 1391 and then Amtrak No. 10031. In 2008, the car was in a North Star Rail excursion train.

Excursion Santorin - Septembre 2011

In October 1987 Conrail was open to running special trains, such as this fall foliage excursion powered by the two restored Pennsy E units. They looked very much out of place at MP 338 of the former NYC water level route. Scanned from a 35mm slide.
