The Excursion appears to be a touring bike offered around the turn of the 90's. It was set up more like a European trekking bike, though, with flat bars. It came stock with a bottom bracket generator (!) which this specimen lacks. However, there is a very Euro rear wheel lock on this one! Racks also appear to be original.
seen whilst on an excursion is MRN's Hotspur Leyland Leopard PLaxton Supreme SOA680S, fleet no 680, deliverd new to Cannock depot in January 78, transfering to Wellington depot in July 78. Although Wellington depot operated under the Tellus banner for the town services, the rural routes came under the Hotspur name, as did the coach unit that was set up here.
Excursion with Maricel into the world of magic and fairies, it was great fun, especially when the vodka man came around the corner, who knows what he wanted to do with us.

Southern Railway steam excursion train - July 4, 1979. I was pretty sure I couldn't get a good picture of the lead diesel and the steam engine, so I concentrated on trying to get the steamer. Looking back, I kind of wish I had gotten the Chessie cat in the lead here. Who knew that Chessie cats would be as far removed as steam power, thirty one years later?
Oh how we Europeans scoffed at the sheer vulgar bulk of the original Ford Excursion. Its typical North American excess and terrible fuel consumption were totally at odds with what we were driving and thought this would see the end of the SUV boom with some kind of backlash!
Well SUV's certainly haven't gone away and although the Excursion was still massive even by todays standards so have many of our SUV's and pick-up trucks too!
It was only a matter of time before Matchbox paid homage to this leviathan and here it is, debuting in the latest batch of Moving Parts. They certainly haven't dare skimp on metal content or proportions, both of which have needed to be particularly generous for the casting to look right.
Its actually quite a stunning diecast for its price point with glitzy chrome, shiny metallics and fantastic front and rear detailing.

LAL 425 is on the back of the Northbound excursion train at Pole Bridge Rd. in Avon, NY on 10/27/2012. This was the first public excursion over the LA&L since 1989.
