We have a lovely photo from the Dublin Trams Collection for your perusal today. I have not heard the word "excursion" for a very long time. It is a word that reminds me of three specific things, being cold, soggy tomato sandwiches contaminated with sand and egg salad. Oh, the joys of youth and memory!

A Rocky Mountain Railroad Club excursion over the Great Western makes a photo run at Severance Lake on September 10, 1961. Great Western 2-8-0s 51 and 75 provided the power for the trip. A Baggage car, two Sleepers and three Coaches borrowed from the Colorado & Southern carried the excursionists. The Sleepers are the most curious addition, as they must have been what was available since their overnight accommodations were certainly not needed for the trip.

P&W's "Two Rivers Steam Special" heads south towards Groton on the Norwich line in the Greenville section on Norwich. Plant and tree life is still alive along the Shetucket and Thames Rivers.

Recorded passing Bearley West Junction signal box on Easter Monday in 1984, BR 47450 had charge of a day excursion that had visited Stratford-upon-Avon. The return working to Manchester would use the North Curve between Hatton West and North Junctions to head north via Birmingham.

It's a special excursion indeed when folks at the White Mountain Central Railroad get to ride on the line's 1929 REO Railbus. In this frame, the bus is just exiting the west portal of the Howe Truss Covered Bridge over the Pemigewasset River, as it heads back to the station after a brief trip into Wolfman Territory.

This rare railbus was originally built as a city bus by the REO Motorcar Company in Lansing, Michigan and converted for rail-borne operations in 1930 at the shops of the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad in Maine. She served several owners over the years before being acquired and restored by Clark's Trading Post for use on the White Mountain Central Railroad. She is typically stored away in the facility's engine house and is brought out for special occasions, such as the 2014 "Railroad Days" event where she is pictured here.

An excursion ship cruises in front of the sharp peaks of the Antarctic peninsula. The dramatic peaks have an appearance very suggestive of the southern Andes range, and for good reason. They are in fact part of the Andes, which dives into the ocean below Tierra del Fuego, and then re-emerges on the Antarctic peninsula.

Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and highest continent in the world. It is twice the size of Australia and a third larger than Europe. It is covered with ice averaging a mile thick, and yet is officially a desert because it receives so little annual precipitation, less than an inch a year. The temperature has reached 129 degrees below zero, the coldest ever recorded naturally on earth. The average elevation of the continent is 7500 feet, and it's highest point is Vinson Massif, at 16,050 feet.

We arrived here on an overcast, cloudy day but fortunately had numerous breaks where the Antarctic coast emerged dramatically through the clouds.

I tried to map this, but I guess Flickr has never heard of Antarctica.

Today it is oncemore hot, we have 33 degree Celcius among the shades. Enjoy the refreshing rain in the photo.
