Although she was built as a heavy freight hog for Southern Railway back in 1911, this handsome Alco Mikado #4501 has now been hauling passengers in excursion service a whole lot longer than she ever worked in the freight business. Retired by Southern Railway in 1948, after 37 years of "active" service, this engine spent about 16 years hauling coal trains for a short line in Kentucky. In 1966, she was acquired by a private owner, restored and then leased back to Southern Railway for their passenger excursion program, and later to Southern's successor, Norfolk Southern. When that company's steam program ended in the mid-1990s, she came to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, where she's been ever since. The 4501 is now a regular on both the museum's local excursion trains as well as the longer excursions to Summerville, GA.

A very memorable Sunday excursion to the Gloucester Rail Day, held at the old Horton Road Motive Power Depot. A good collection of preserved diesel traction was on display, including the sole surviving Clayton Class 1 Bo-Bo D8568. The 117-strong class was built between 1962-65 and became Class 17 under the British Rail TOPS scheme, but proved unsuccessful in service. The first examples were withdrawn in July 1968, weeks ahead of the final BR steam, and the class was extinct by the end of 1971. I never managed to photograph Claytons in service, the type being confined mainly to Central Lowland Scottish depots. D8568 managed to escape scrapping by virtue of its sale to industrial users, and in later preservation, it has enjoyed an active life on the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway.

Our third port of call was Naples, which for us meant spending most of the day on an excursion to Pompeii, where neither of us had been.
Overall, the tour was a bit chaotic and we saw more bakeries and fewer murals and villas than I'd've preferred. But it was still very interesting indeed, and I learned more than I expected.

A southbound steam excursion led by Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 passes the intermediate signal at Vienna Road south of Monroe, Michigan, on the Detroit Line of Norfolk Southern.
5050 which became 24050 waits on a train at Aberystwyth sporting green livery. The slide is from an unknown photographer with no information. The trees in leaf means it's probably summer with the 24 likely on the 18.28 to York mails and passenger train. The presence of another train of mark ones would suggest an excursion or railtour is visting the seaside resort. 5050 was the first of the 24/1 sub-class which was lighter than the 24/0 first fifty due to smaller fuel and water tanks plus a lighter Stone heating boiler. There is a picture of 5050 at Derby Works Open Day on the excellent Derby Sulzers website in September 1972 in blue livery and according to the BR Database the loco acquired full yellow ends in May 1971 so this slide dates between 1971 and 1972. D5050 was new to March (31B) on November 27th 1959 and withdrawn in October 1975.
