LIR: Engineering in the 21st Century (And Some Fun Applications of CAD). Dr. Barry Hojjatie, VSU Engineering Dept., talked about the various fields of engineering and showed members how to apply a computer graphics program called AutoCAD to develop simple 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional images, and convert the 3-D computer images to 3-D objects using a 3-D Prototyper at the VSU Engineering Lab. Aerospace Engineering Professor James Cutler oversees launch day operations as students make final preparations to release the balloon and CubeSat payload during the BSA CubeSat Demonstration Program (CDP) outside the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building, on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, on April 19, 2025. The launch day brought together students across disciplines and experience levels to collaborate on real-world engineering challenges.
As part of the BSA CubeSat Demonstration Program, students designed and built small-scale satellite systems to collect and store atmospheric data. Supported by the MXL CubeSat Flight Lab and Blue Origin engineers, this hands-on project gave participants real-world experience in system design, fabrication, and flight testing.

71-year-old Cindy lost the full use of her limbs following complications from a severe heart attack. While waiting for her new robotic prosthetic, Cindy improvised 'object hacks' to help her with everyday tasks that she now found impossible. These adaptations to the most commonly used objects in her home allowed her to hold cutlery, play cards, brush her teeth, read the newspaper and much more.
Design educators Sara Hendren and Caitrin Lynch documented Cindy's hacks 'to illustrate new ways of understanding who can engineer, what counts as engineering, and this matters'. The project reminds us that the best innovations are not necessarily high-tech, and that technologies are valuable for their social function or ability to empower us, not just for their precision or sleek appearance.
