The West Point Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers invited seventh graders from M.S. 223 in the Bronx to the Engineering Expo April 28 to learn more about engineering concepts from cadets and instructors. Lt. Col. Donald Outing, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, introduced the students to bridge design, using the same software employed by grade school and high school teams during the annual West Point Bridge Design Contest sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Phil Savage, ChE Professor examines the work of Peter Valdez, CoE ChE Graduate Students and members of ChE Professor Phil Savage's research group, in Savage's lab in the HH Dow Building on July 26, 2012. Members of Savage's research group focus on the elucidation of the kinetics and mechanisms of chemical transformations in hot compressed water. Water at high temperatures and pressures displays interesting properties, such as an increased ion product and decreased dielectric constant, density, and viscosity, which can favorably influence a variety of chemical transformations. The Savage Research Group seeks to better understand these complicated reaction pathways using both model compounds and complex biomass feedstocks to promote the advancement of renewable energy technologies.
