Hewetson Ltd Embroiderers (Albion Mill) Macclesfield

My Grandmother started work here aged 14 (1934) on a Schiffli embroidery machine.

Augustus Hewetson established this company

in Macclesfield in 1898 with four hand

embroidery machines. Over the next few years

it was gradually expanded, with the purchase

of further hand embroidery machines, and

schiffli machines in 1905. In 1927 automatic

machines were installed and then the firm claimed

to be ‘the largest manufacturer of all types

of embroidery in the world’.

During the two world wars Hewetson was

a major supplier of badges for the Allied

armed forces, embroidering fifty million

badges during the Second World War.

By 1958 there were about 1,000 employees

on several different sites. During all this

time (1898 – 1958) the company was tightly

controlled by one family, the Hewetsons.

There was a change in ownership in 1982

when it joined the Berisford group. Following

re-structuring of the company in 1993

Hewetson ceased to operate as a schiffli

manufacturing company.

These three were also in the running for my contribution to MM-Redux.

This pencil case was hand embroidered from a pattern drawn by myself.

Recto of silk embroidered postcard (140mm x 89mm) made in France and addressed to Miss Gwen Nevin, Strathalbyn, South Australia.

A small (78mm x 45mm) card, recto here photographed below, that apparently accompanied the larger card is 'from Harold'.

Miss Gwendoline Annie Nevin was born in Burra, South Australia, on 30 October 1900.

The identity of Harold is unknown

Embroidered with humorous quotes about food. "Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond, cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education". -Mark Twain-

I embroidered these pictures of my mother and her siblings on a linen dishtowel for our extended family dirty santa game.

Using the butterfly and dragonfly pattern from the book, Colorful Stitchery by Kristin Nicholas, I hand embroidered these linen pillows using DMC variegated threads.

I bought this denim dress a while ago, thinking I'll embelish it some day. And esmereldes' felt jumpers kind of inspired me to fo this!

YES! I think I found a way around the internet blockage!

Cooked this up last night. What do ya think?

It's a little hard to see in the other pictures, but my tabi had matching flowers embroidered at the toes!

I would rather have worn teal zori, but I don't have any blue or green zori in anywhere near the right shade, so I wore this pair that matched the kimono's general colour scheme.

Etsy buy from the States. I can believe the label that says they're embroidered by hand. Rather charmingly, they look like someone's early attempts at applique! And what is the box illustration all about? I'm pretty sure that's an old microphone she's holding.

Very ornate embroidered banner with sequins and mirrors, and a whimsical googly-eyed bat (symbol of happiness) under the crest at the top.

The front cover of this Moleskine cahier is embroidered in pink, red and white threads.

Bronze plated filigrees embroidered with glass seed beads and set off with Swarovski crystal rhinestone centres,

I found five embroidered napkins from Peru in my linen drawer. I thought they would be fun to work with. I am using size 75 button molds, but the "window" has to be fairly large, so there is not a lot of room for embellishment. Almost done with the third one and two more to go!
