Kenya, Samburu National Reserve, 2010
Samburu National Reserve is located by the Southern Bank of Northern Ewaso Ng'iro river in Kenya.
An elephant has to eat around 16 hours a day, up to 270 kg of food. It's because only 40% of what they eat is digested.
An elephant rarely dies of age, but rather because its molars are so worn down that it can't eat anymore.
Lutsandvo (loot-sund-vor), or Luti, weighed about 225 lbs at birth. Here he seems to be using his trunk to turn a little rock.
I Love Elephants! However, this one at Greenville Zoo in South Carolina was very, very sad....so hard to see.
Two ♀ elephants - Matriarch and sister, or daughter, or just good friends? I saw these two a little before sunset in a high valley on a game drive in Mthethomusha reserve. We got as close as 10m thanks to some real off-roading.
The last elephant at the Lincoln Park Zoo, named Wankie. I took this in on Feb. 13, 2005. RIP, Wankie.
The Elephant Nature Park was created by a thai woman called Lek back in the 90’s after she grew tired of watching the elephants dissapearing.She started out with 4 elephants that she bought from local logging companies, and found a piece of land that the elephants could live on.Check out my travelblog at www.175days.no
The most beautiful wildlfife encounter for me, was to see the "endangered" (IUCN) "Bornean Pygmy Elephant", the smallest Elephant species in the world.
The pygmy elephants of Borneo are baby-faced with oversized ears, plump bellies and tails so long they sometimes drag on the ground as they walk. They are also more gentle-natured than their Asian elephant counterparts.
Here, a whole family was coming for a refreshment to the Kinabatangan river.
