Hey, Axel. What's new?
What's up, Miles? How do you like my new place?
New place? You're gonna live here?
Oh yeah. Just a few things to clear out. I'm concerned that there's mice though.
Yeah?
Yeah.I saw one.
How big?
Not big. Like from your wrist to your elbow.
Dude. You ever see a mouse before?
Well, no.
I hate to say this, but I don't think you have clear idea of what a mouse looks like.
Maybe not.
Definitely not.
The wasps and broken glass aside this now decaying greenhouse is something straight from a fairy tale or a Disney movie, a terrific location to spend ones Saturday afternoon to be honest.
The greenhouse was built on the side of a large castle in Europe that is far from abandoned (although it sure looks like it from the outside). However out the back a German Shepard awaits you with its bare teeth.
For once I got to shoot a location with too much light as it poured in through the broken glass above, a rare treat in Urban Exploring. With the light came heat, shooting in a greenhouse certainly is a warming experience.
Maybe a bit cliche, but the idea grabbed me and my son was (somewhat) willing. I first saw this effect used on Pink Floyd's Ummagumma album - released in 1969. I can't imagine how the photographer did it without the help of the computer programs we have today, but then again Pink Floyd always had cool album covers. The name Droste harkens back to the early 1900s when a company named Droste ran an advertisement of a woman carrying a tray with the product on it. Of course the product showed an ad of a woman carrying a tray with the product on it, and so forth.
Headed out with a mate last night to Stockton sand dunes to take advantage of the dark new moon skies overhead. We ended up walking a lot further then planned, though with a beautiful night and good company it was welcomed. The light pollution ensured a somewhat faint milky way compared to a few nights earlier. This is a composite image from a nice little location we stumbled across in the dark.

This unmarked lane in the Napa Valley in California's wine country makes me wonder who lives down there and what sort of wine do they produce! 30-second exposure, no HDR.

The Story

A temporary break from the seascapes...
I am not sure where this leads, but this is the first in a series that will cover each of the 4 seasons in the Northern Hemisphere, because the leaves will turn Red in late November and then be bare for a couple of months until spring in February or early March. it will look different each time.
I was heading up the Napa valley on a warm day last weekend, when I was once again FORCED to stop and take a shot. Well, actually I waited for the sun to almost go down behind the hills to get warmer light, then I took the verrrrry long shot through the large automatic gate! The leaves moving in the breeze softened the look of the trees for a more impressionistic look and feel. During daylight hours, you have to do something extra to avoid a photo looking like a snapshot. Actually, this would look better with a wet street, but the dry season that lasts until November will make that difficult to pull off!
The map shows exactly where this is. It is right off the road, but no easy parking is available. And make sure nowone is driving towards you!

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

I won't post a lot of effects pictures, but I am just learning some of this stuff and I really liked this one. It came from a photo I took the other night. That picture is posted as well, but is not as exciting.

I just went my own way with THIS Gimp tut in Photoshop.
Thanks to Don for passing this tut on.

A bit too backlit maybe - the sun is up early in the Uists in May (this was taken at 5.30am). I like the almost translucent effect on the bill and legs - how's that for a skinny leg bone!

Mock-up band shoot with Kane and Debbie for my media coursework.
Woo! fake band shoots in golden hour!
I think they'd make an awesome band, the Butterfly Effect :)
Colorful ballons flying into the setting sun. Even though it is very contrasty due to the bright sun behind the balloon. I still liked the effect.

My first sunset in Iceland, and I was treated to this scene! Lenticular clouds forming directly above the spire of Selfosskirkja. The colors of the sunset only added to the halo effect for the rest of my stay in this magical country.
I later read this church, located in the center of Selfoss, started being build in 1952 and was consecrated on Palm Sunday, 25 March 1956. To the members of Selfosskirkja, here's to 70 years of Palm Sundays in this striking place of worship and best wishes to all on this Easter Sunday!!!
I'm extremely fortunate to share this image with you all via Explore. Thanks to each of you for the feedback and the continued encouragement! Cheers!
Whilst we did receive a text from Sky to say my new router will be delivered today I had accepted that it was never going to happen given the snow. And then, a touch of luck, my old router decided to spring back into life. Yay! So, a quick upload to keep things ticking over. This was taken last weekend on a very cold and icy morning at Bristol's harbourside. The row of coloured houses are the much loved Redcliffe Parade.
Hope you are all having fun in the snow (well those of you who have some). My boys got to use their sled and we all got to throw snowballs at each other which was loads of fun!
Have a great Sunday! :-)
