I spent Monday at DreamWorks' Glendale campus as a part of their Educators' Symposium. It was fun to be back on campus - this time as an invited teacher, which made it rather unique. Alex McDowell gave an in depth talk about design for live action and animated features in the digital age, including examples from his work on Minority Report, The Terminal, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Bee Movie. He also gave us a sneak peak at the special trailer of Watchmen that was only screened at Comic-Con. Though I'm very familiar with all the ways that digital design is being used in production, Alex has a unique and informative view on how it fits into the big picture, including an interesting workflow chart (that makes more sense when he walks you through it).
They also screened a sequence from Madagascar II and a 3D sequence from Monsters Vs. Aliens. Since these aren't due out for a bit, I won't say anything other than they look fantastic and we laughed out loud all the way through both of them. I can't wait for the final films!
We were also treated to a composite reel of student work from 24 schools that submitted pieces. It's exciting to see the level of talent that is just coming of age now, and the breadth and variety of work that they're doing.

42 educators attended from throughout the Hamilton County Education system.
LEGOengineering is developed by the Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO), with the support of LEGO Education and innovative teachers from around the globe, including the Engineering Design Group Educators (EDGE).
The mission of LEGOengineering is to inspire and support teachers in bringing LEGO-based engineering to all students.

Ten MTA members were among top educators honored at the State House on June 11.
David McGlothlin, a Provincetown middle school teacher and member of the Provincetown Association of Educators, was named the 2015 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year.
The ceremony also honored the 2016 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year, Audrey Jackson, a fifth-grade teacher at Manning Elementary School in Boston, as well as finalists and semifinalists for the award.
Two of the finalists — David Kujawski, a sixth-grade science teacher at Bird Middle School in Walpole and Jennifer Ormerod, who teaches second grade at Palmer River School in Rehoboth — were also on hand.
Kujawski and Ormerod — along with semifinalist Deven Antani, an English teacher at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, are members of the Dighton-Rehoboth Teachers Association.
Pamela Dalton, an art teacher at Cole Elementary School in Boxford and a member of the Boxford Teachers Association, was also a semifinalist for Teacher of the Year.
Anthony Petrelis, a fifth-grade teacher at McGlynn Elementary School in Medford and a member of the Medford Teachers Association, was named a 2014 Milken National Educator.
The ceremony also honored finalists for 2014 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Among them were:
•Mary Cowhey, a first- and second-grade teacher at the Jackson Street School in Northampton and a member of the Northampton Association of School Employees.
•John Heffernan, technology specialist at the Dunphy Elementary School in Williamsburg and Karen Schweitzer, a sixth-grade teacher at Dunphy. Both are members of the Williamsburg Teachers Association.
•Nicole Hoyceanyls, a science teacher at Pierce Middle School and a member of the Milton Educators Association.
Governor Cuomo, Westchester County Executive Astorino, we did it!
We added 19 people to the rosters of trained iMapInvasives trackers with Heidi Krahling walking us through the process of becoming Citizen Scientists. This FREE workshop for volunteers and educators in the lower Hudson Valley followed Governor Cuomo's signing of invasive species legislation last week. That law will now help protect our NY waterways and habitats from the destructive impact of invasive species.
The afternoon drew people from Rye but also Yorktown and Connecticut including the Science Department heads of 2 High Schools one of whom is hoping to incorporate
it into their AP Environmental course along with 4 members of the local garden clubs in Rye, a member of a nearby Land Trust, staff from NY City Parks, Westchester County Parks and more. Plans are already in the works for a fall event to coordinate with National Public Lands Day on September 29, 2012.
Jay Heritage Center is proud to be partnering with NYDEC and the Nature Conservancy to educate the public about non-native and exotic plants, trees and animals that can diminish local populations of flora and fauna. Future workshops will continue to show volunteers how to map these threats to our state's environment and economy. This group took a short walk afterwards to identify invasive species on the Jay Property including Japanese stiltgrass, multiflora rose, mugwort, porcelainberry, Norway maple trees and more.
iMapInvasives is an online mapping tool that uses GPS technology to define problematic areas. All interested groups, from land managers to the general public, are encouraged to help keep the NYS map up-to-date and accurate by reporting invasive species locations. Training is required to enter data. This free program will be offered again at JHC this fall with options for basic (observation) and advanced (survey and treatment) data entry.

Every year, the College of Education hosts a back-to-school thank-you reception for Pullman-area educators, in particular the Pullman School District, with whom the college has had a special relationship for a number of years. This year's event took place at South Fork on August 22.

This symposium will explore the power dynamics that shape and marginalize Asian American narratives and will take place
Panel "The Unraveling of the American Dream across Korean Migration Narratives" with Seungsook Moon, Minju Bae and Jiyeon Yuh
Minju Bae is an activist, scholar, and educator. Her work examines Asian diasporas and American histories. Minju is a member of Nodutdol for Korean Community Development.
Seungsook Moon is Professor of Sociology at Vassar College where she served as Resident Director of London Program for Media and Culture, Chair of Sociology Department, and Director of Asian Studies Program. She is the author of Militarized Modernity and Gendered Citizenship in South Korea (2005) and a co-editor, co-author and contributor of Over There: Living with the U.S. Military Empire from World War II to the Present (2010). Both books were published by Duke University Press and translated into Korean. As a political and cultural sociologist and scholar of gender studies specializing in South Korea, she has published numerous articles in major scholarly journals and has been also consulted by news media, including CNN, the Economist, El Pais, El Periodico (Spain), Korea Herald (South Korea), South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), and Weekendavisen (Denmark). Currently, she is finishing up a book manuscript that examines the relationship between neoliberalism and democracy through the lens of civic activism in South Korea.
Ji-Yeon Yuh (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1999) teaches Asian American history, Asian diasporas, race and gender, and oral history at Northwestern University. Her current projects include Asian Diasporas Digital Archive, a digital oral history repository at the Northwestern Library; “Performing History: Documenting and Enacting the Asian American Midwest,” an oral history and performance project with scholars at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, funded by the Humanities Without Walls consortium; Memories of War, an undergraduate research seminar and oral history project on the life narratives of Vietnamese and Korean Americans; and a book on Korean diasporas in China, Japan, and the United States. Active in community organizations, she is a co-founder of the Alliance of Scholars Concerned about Korea, a board member of Korea Policy Institute, and former board president of KANWIN, a Korean American women's organization focusing on domestic violence. She is a native of Seoul and Chicago, a former journalist, and a fan of genre fiction.
Workshop: "Creative Storytelling: A Screenprinting Workshop on Migration & Urban Narratives" with Rodney Camarce, Asian Arts Initiative and Maria Dumlao
Maria Dumlao works with combined media, including film, video, animation, sound, photography, embroidery and installation. Her work explores individual and collective history as mediated experience. Dumlao combines images of history, mythology and folklore, landscapes, and creatures to propose alternatives to the systemic representations ordered by colonial narratives. Born Tagalog in the Philippines, Dumlao immigrated to the US mainland, where she currently lives and works in the traditional homelands of the Lenape in Philadelphia. Dumlao received a BA in Studio Art & Art History from Rutgers College and MFA in Studio Art at Hunter College-CUNY; has exhibited, screened and performed both nationally and internationally; and recently was awarded 2021 Velocity Fund, the 2020 Leeway Transformation Award, the 2020-21 Philadelphia Photo Art Center Artist-in-Residence, the 2019 Independence Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship, and the 2019-21 Center for Emerging Visual Artist Fellowship. This past year’s (2021) exhibitions include, Pearlstein Gallery (Philadelphia), Michener Art Museum (Doylestown), Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (Philadelphia), and TCNJ Art Gallery (Trenton). Upcoming projects include Mas Masarap Magkasama (more delicious together), a public and interactive 2-season project in collaboration with Bahay215 at The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (Philadelphia, 2022), residencies at Interlude Art Residency (Hudson, NY 2022) and Portside Arts Center (Philadelphia, 2022), and a solo exhibition at Rowan University Art Gallery (Glassboro, 2023).
Rodney Camarce returns to the Asian Arts Initiative after serving multiple arts organizations throughout Philadelphia as a visual artist, a facilitator, the Youth Development Manager for the Mural Arts Program and a graphic recorder for the Bartol Foundation, Lenfest Foundation, and Ground Work USA. He has served as a Co-Ambassador for the Racial Equity Network for the National Guild for Community Arts, has been a Community Organizer in South Philadelphia and the International District in Seattle, works to build solidarity among all people in struggle, believes that we must subvert this cultural genocide by any means necessary, and practice radical optimism to imagine new possibilities.
