ELC's Conference Empowers Early Educators, Strengthens Teacher-Child Connections

On Saturday, January 27, 2024, 300 early educators from across Sarasota County gathered at Suncoast Technical College in Sarasota to experience a morning filled with education, empowerment and enlightenment. Offering a diverse array of workshops, the professional development event focused on creating and strengthening positive teacher-child interactions.
Whether you're a seasoned pro or new to the field, our conference caters to all. Saturday’s immersive experience was designed for preschool directors, preschool teachers as well as those
working with little ones at local businesses and community-based nonprofits. The goal is for them
to gain valuable knowledge, discover new strategies, and exchange insights with peers.

Twenty-seven-year-old Hafsat always felt the calling to become an educator, having grown up surrounded by passionate teachers in Nigeria. Today, at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri, Hafsat teaches children of repentant former members of armed groups. At this centre, Hafsat touches the lives of countless girls and boys. This work has only confirmed the young teacher’s belief that teaching is what she was born to do.
With funding from Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises within the UN system, and support from UNICEF and the Government of Norway, temporary learning centres have been constructed in the camp to provide vulnerable children and youth with foundational literacy and numeracy skills.

MS and HS educators attended our Million Orchid Project training on January 16, 2016. Over one hundred schools will be propagating native orchids for this project.

El Museo del Barrio invited educators to see the newly renovated facilities, including two exceptional inaugural exhibitions: VOCES Y VISIONES: Four decades through El Museo del Barrio's Permanent Collection, and NEXUS NEW YORK: Latin/American Artists in the Modern Metropolis in Manhattan Nov. 12, 2009. Educators get hands-on experience playing a game called "Who Can Harvest a Walleye" that shows how factors affecting lower parts of the food chain can affect higher levels as well.

Community, faith, and labor advocates joined educators, healthcare and human service workers, bus drivers, and other public-sector workers call on Massachusetts lawmakers to avoid devastating budget cuts, and instead invest in public services by asking profitable corporations and investors to pay their fair share.
