Amtrak ACS-64 616 at Edison, NJ

An NJ Transit local bound for New York Penn station slows for the stop at Edison on a crystal clear early autumn morning.

Conrail ME-2 returns to Metuchen Yard from COUNTY interlocking after waiting for many Amtrak and NJ Transit trains to pass. The majority of the 14-car train consists of empty covered hoppers from the busy salt distributor on the Delco Lead. The head car is perhaps the only exception, most likely an empty plastic pellet car off the National Can Lead. Lately the ME-2 crew prefers operating with a unit on each end of the consist vs. running with a caboose on the hind end for shove moves. Perhaps in warmer weather the caboose will make a return appearance.

Nearly the entire Raritan Central roster is gathered at their engine service area. RCRY 2092 is one of two ex-Georgia Central GP20s acquired recently by the Raritan Central. Also visible are three SW1500s, a GP38 and a tiny bit of RCRY's GP30.

Remanufactured AEM-7AC 917 leads the northbound Silver Meteor (A98) through Edison on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak's Long distance trains are starting to look like traditional passenger trains again now that the new Viewliner II baggage cars are in service. Age restrictions forced old Heritage baggage cars to the rear of the train.

The southbound Silver Star heads for a warmer climate.

Raritan Central GP20 701 was built 8/60 as UP 727. At some point it was de-turbocharged. Before coming to the RCRY it worked for the Arizona Central and Columbia & Cowlitz as CLC 701. The end stripes (unique to only this unit on the RCRY roster) are a holdover from the CLC paint scheme.

Conrail ME-84 heads west for County interlocking after working the National Can lead about a mile east of this location. The short consist is bracketed by a pair of former Conrail GP38-2s with NS 5313 leading and 5311 trailing. ME-2 is the normal symbol of this job, and I'm not sure why this symbol was used on this day.

Conrail ME-2 shoves east on track 1 toward Metuchen Yard and will soon be in the clear at Lincoln interlocking. The consist includes cars from both the National Can and General Tire leads as well as the usual caboose on the east end. This former Reading caboose is usually assigned to ME-2, as it allows the crew to make a quick reverse move at County interlocking without having to run the engine around the train. It is the height of rush hour, and moments before this photo was taken ME-2 met two westbound passenger trains just west of the station.

An eastbound NJ Transit local from Trenton emerges from the snowy wake of a westbound Amtrak Acela moments before making the station stop at Edison.

Conrail ME-2 heads back to Metuchen Yard from Deans, passing through Edison station on track 1. Today's train is very short, with a single, empty plastic pellet covered hopper car bracketed by a GP40-2 and GP38-2.

This Raritan Central job has made a Saturday morning run to Conrail's Metuchen Yard to interchange cars. Shortly after returning to Raritan Center, the crew is hard at work shoving down a spur to deliver a loaded car to Home Depot.

An Amtrak Acela consist is running west on track 2...not uncommon at rush hour. On this day the routing was necessitated by a disabled train 649 on track 3 at Linden. I assume a lack of oncoming traffic allowed for extended running on track 2.

KN701 heads west (south) with a light GP15D, plowing through drifting snow on track 2 of the Northeast Corridor. The blizzard caused NJ Transit to cancel all service for the day. The limited service that Amtrak was able to provide primarily used the outer tracks 1 and 4 for east and westbound moves. Tracks 2 and 3 were covered by drifting snow, allowing for this dramatic view of an otherwise boring light engine move. Amtrak's GP15Ds are not equipped with any type of plow on the pilot, but that didn't seem to matter on this day.
