Amtrak 164 behind ACS-64 621 meets Amtrak "Holiday Extra" 1057 at Edison. The extra is being handled by a set of borrowed NJ Transit Arrow III EMUs.
Amtrak's Silver Star is only about 40 minutes into its journey from New York to Miami as it passes through Edison on the Northeast Corridor.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, I spent two thirds of the Memorial Day weekend in the hospital with chest pains and shortness of breath. Health and legal issues have been a bit of a problem. I was finally able to get out for some shooting after services on the Sunday before last. Of course I got a hard time for it. This is one of the shots I got. I refuse to let my present circumstances keep me from trying to photograph the beauty of God's creation.

In the distance...the crew of Conrail ME-2 is finishing up some switching moves on the National Can lead while a westbound NJ Transit local scoots past on 4 Track. The yellow and black "100" mph signs warn of a permanent speed restriction for the curve into Metuchen ahead.
Just past those signs is an overhead bridge which once carried a balloon track over the Northeast Corridor. This track was PRR's eastbound connection to Camp Kilmer. Today this is a "bridge to nowhere". With no approaches on either side, it remains intact only as a catenary support.
Camp Kilmer was constructed in the early 1940s between the present-day location of Edison station and the Rutgers University Livingston campus. A substantial amount of trackage (including a yard and passenger platforms) supported the installation which was served by the PRR, Reading and Lehigh Valley railroads. Very few remnants of this operation exist today, with this overpass being one of the more obvious signs. Several warehouse buildings remain on the former camp grounds; these are now part of Rutgers University. An occasional piece of rail sticking out of the dirt and a few Hayes-style bumping posts are the only remnants of rail activity in that area.

Amtrak work train KN702 shoves west through Edison, NJ with a very lengthy consist. The train includes an undercutter (ballast cleaner) with supporting conveyor cars plus a long cut of side dump cars. Trailing the lead unit is Amtrak GP38H-3 527 (ex-GO Transit GP40TC). In a few miles the trail will cross over to track one to access Amtrak's maintenance-of-way yard at Adams.

NJ Transit YM32 hauls ass through Edison station with a single Comet coach for Morrisville, PA. I didn't use that expression lightly...the engineer assured a hesitant Amtrak CTEC-8 dispatcher that he would make track speed shortly after passing COUNTY interlocking...100 mph.
Yet another NJ Transit equipment extra...GP40-2 4303 leading two Multilevels and an ALP-46 on track 1 at Edison. The train is running from Morrisville Yard to the MMC.
Acela 2167 is running west/south on track 2 at Edison due to an NJ Transit Jersey Avenue local which has reversed direction onto track 3 at County interlocking for a deadhead run back to New York.
NJT 3738 deadheads east on the Northeast Corridor at Edison, NJ during the evening rush hour. This train originated at Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick and will make its first revenue stop at Metropark. It will then run express to Newark Airport and make all local stops between there an New York Penn Station.

The history of St. Thomas Aquinas High School can been seen on the side of bus 78. The large dark rectangle is a leftover from the large black patch it wore while the school was known as Bishop George Ahr HS. Its original owner was Cardinal McCarrick HS, which closed in 2015. Its students (& apparently at least one of its buses) then went to Bishop George Ahr HS the following school year. A few years ago, 78 was the school's only type C bus. It now sits surrounded by the school's current, much larger, fleet.

This guy seemed to like having his picture taken. He allowed me to get relatively close to get these shots. He didn't take off until a group of kids charged at him, but by that time I had already gotten quite a few shots of him.
Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but last Thursday (6-25-2015) I had a scary incident occur. I was looking out my front door waiting for my ride to the doctor. The next thing I know, I'm in the ER. I don't remember anything between. I was told that I had a seizure and that I had numerous seizures between then and Friday at noon. The whole time I spoke gibberish. I had never had one before and it scared the daylights out of me. If my wife hadn't been there, no telling what would have happened. They now have me on three seizure medications and I am not allowed to drive. Any and all prayer is appreciated.
AND THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER EXPLORE!
A Metuchen-based local heads west on the Northeast Corridor through Edison. At the time this was a lucky catch...I was not as familiar with local operations here at all. CR B23-7 2000 leads three plastics hoppers and the ever-present caboose CR 22137 (which hasn't looked this good in YEARS). Some things have changed and some haven't!

This will probably be the last winter season for the dwindling fleet of AEM-7s on Amtrak's roster. So it was very nice to see 919 leading Northeast Regional train 195 through the heart of a major winter storm. In this view 195 was running only a few minutes late, but the train would eventually arrive in Washington, DC about an hour and a half late. This is not bad considering the blizzard conditions that were encountered during most of the trip. Heavy winds caused the ripples of drifting snow that can be seen across all four tracks at this location.

It's train time at Edison, Conrail ME-84 slowly rolls west through the station on Track 4 while an Amtrak Northeast Regional train flies by on track 2. Track 1 is occupied by a New Jersey Transit local bound for Penn Station making Edison quite a busy place for at least a few seconds.
A set of Arrow III EMDs heads back to Penn Station a short while after completing a run to Jersey Avenue. The set must have been needed to cover another outbound rush hour train from New York.
This Raritan Central job has made a Saturday morning run to Conrail's Metuchen Yard to interchange cars. The crew has just returned to Raritan Center and they will spot a loaded car at Home Depot before yarding the train.
Amtrak "Metroliner" cab car 9640 leads a Saturday-only Keystone service train 662 from Harrisburg, PA to New York, NY. The first snow storm of the season started only an hour earlier and snow is already sticking to just about everything visible in this view at Edison, NJ.

This is a shot taken back when I was still using my Canon 20D. It was taken at Dismal Swamp Conservation Area in Edison, NJ. I took it because I liked the tree reflections in the water and the calming affect it had on me. I felt like part of the nature around me.
NJT ALP-46 4619 hauls the first batch of ten borrowed MARC coaches from Philadelphia to the MMC. The train is passing through Edison station moments after another MMC Extra which had originated in Morrisville, PA. NJT GP40PH-2 4145 was sent to MARC in exchange for these cars, which are needed to alleviate a serious shortage of serviceable coaches.
NS 212, with SD80MAC 7226 leading, is holding clear of Tingley Lane at CP Potter in Edison, NJ. A series of unfortunate events has caused trains to stack up on this blustery late-winter morning. A broken rail in the vicinity of CP Potter has taken track 2 out of service, so all trains are forced to use track 1. That is when Murphy's Law was put into full effect. NS 18G, which was running just ahead of 212, took a hit on the Middlesex Wheel Impact Detector and was forced to stop at CP Aldene so the conductor could walk the train. The Lehigh Line was effectively shut down until 18G could get underway which, thankfully was not too long. But by then the damage was done, with multiple NS and CSX eastbounds lined up waiting not just for 18G, but also for 21M which was later given priority to run west.

Previously Bishop George Ahr number 75, this bus was given a red paint job a number of years ago. The bus still wears its characteristic Bishop George Ahr black patch job, despite the school changing its name to St. Thomas Aquinas in 2019 & the other buses having their patches removed. Now very faded & parked far away from the rest of the fleet, it awaits the next call to duty over summer break.
