Classic Raritan Central power had gathered near the yard office during the "green era" in 2010. While their roster has only gotten more diverse over the years, I do miss those former SCL/Family Lines B23-7s. If you look carefully you can still see the CONRAIL lettering on the front end of 7579.

HHP-C 9750 leads an eastbound Northeast Regional train through Edison during the first week of revenue service for these stopgap "cab cars". The HHP-Cs have been randomly in and out of service over the last month. Not sure what the issues are...but there are apparently issues. These are needed to replace aging former Metroliner cab cars until the new Siemens Airo train sets enter service in the next few years.

Offered once again as a comparison to the preceding image of Amtrak 662 which was captured at nearly the same angle over 23 years later. Amtrak 916 leads a regional consist east through Edison, NJ. Based on the time of day and consist, this may have been train 95, the Old Dominion. Back then trains still carried names, although the "Northeast Direct" designation (a precursor to today's Northeast Regional service) did appear in the timetable as well.

In another scene from the snowy winter of 2010, an NJ Transit ALP-44 shoves an eastbound Northeast Corridor local out of Edison Station. By 2010 the newer and more powerful ALP-46s were more frequently assigned to the NEC where passenger consists were longer and heavier multilevel cars had entered service. Near the end of their career, the ALP-44s were more commonly seen on North Jersey Coast Line trains or on the Morris & Essex. By the end of the following year, ALP-44s would be retired from regular service.

NJ Transit's Atlantic City Express Service (ACES) was a short-lived inter-city train that operated between New York Penn Station and Atlantic City with only one intermediate stop at Newark. The operation was funded by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and three casinos in partnership. The CRDA is a state agency, as is NJ Transit, so essentially New Jersey taxpayers paid for it all, regardless of which agency funded it. Needless to say, the service was a failure and was in operation for only three years (2009-2011). The consist was certainly unique, operating with an ALP-44 electric on one end and a former Amtrak P40DC diesel on the other. The ALP powered the train between New York and Frankford Junction PA where the diesel took over for the Atlantic City leg of the journey. Push-pull operation was necessitated by the reverse move at Frankford. The train seen here was operating during the final summer of service, with 4803 leading through Edison, NJ and 4405 shoving from the rear. The 8 cars specially equipped for this service would be sent back to Bombardier to be rebuilt as regular commuter coaches. The P40DCs would put in a few more years of service on commuter assignments post-2011 before being sold to the State of Connecticut (CT Rail).

Conrail OI-82 made an unusual Sunday afternoon appearance at Edison, bringing 42 cars from Oak Island to Metuchen Yard. This train would usually have diverted off the NEC at LINCOLN Interlocking three miles to the north. Due to track issues on the east leg of the wye at Metuchen, this day's train has run west to Edison on 2 track. After waiting for an eastbound commuter train to clear, OI-82 would shove from 2 track across 1 and onto the 0 track at Metuchen. Aside from a weekday local, this was the only other regular freight that would appear on this portion of the NEC in New Jersey. It is fitting that a pair of former Conrail units are in the lead. Today the job that transfers cars between Oak Island and Metuchen yards primarily runs at night at Amtrak's request. Only the ME-2 local remains in daylight.

NJ Transit's ALP-46s have not aged well, at least cosmetically. Their paint and decals have faded heavily since they were built in the early 2000s. In this 2011 view at Edison, 4604 was approaching 10 years in service, but still looked clean. This was not a revenue move as it is operating on 2 Track of the Northeast Corridor on a Saturday morning. It was most likely a shop move from Morrisville, PA to the MMC.

Amtrak's Pennsylvanian on this day included four private cars on the head end. The head three cars were wrapped for a pre-Thanksgiving promotion by King's Hawaiian, a well-known baker of bread and dinner rolls. Guests were treated to a Thanksgiving meal that included King's Hawaiian baked goods as the cars traveled in segments between Philadelphia and Boston. 42 made a three-way meet at Edison, NJ with a stopped NJ Transit local and a westbound Acela. The train was running over 20 minutes late, passing Edison well after sunset.
For the record, the PVs were:
PAPX 800224: "Blue Ridge Club" - built by P-S in 1950 for C&O
PAXX 800644: built by Budd in 1951 as PRR parlor/diner "Henry Hudson"
PPCX 800045 "Caritas" - built by P-S in 1948 as Frisco 14-4 sleeper "Pierre La Clede"

Snow clings to the hind end of a northbound Acela passing through Edison at speed. A storm over Southeastern Pennsylvania that did not reach far enough north into New Jersey is responsible for this unusual view.
