Amtrak's Pennsylvanian on this day included four private cars on the head end. The head three cars were wrapped for a pre-Thanksgiving promotion by King's Hawaiian, a well-known baker of bread and dinner rolls. Guests were treated to a Thanksgiving meal that included King's Hawaiian baked goods as the cars traveled in segments between Philadelphia and Boston. 42 made a three-way meet at Edison, NJ with a stopped NJ Transit local and a westbound Acela. The train was running over 20 minutes late, passing Edison well after sunset.
For the record, the PVs were:
PAPX 800224: "Blue Ridge Club" - built by P-S in 1950 for C&O
PAXX 800644: built by Budd in 1951 as PRR parlor/diner "Henry Hudson"
PPCX 800045 "Caritas" - built by P-S in 1948 as Frisco 14-4 sleeper "Pierre La Clede"
"PRR" 7503 "Francis L. Suter": built by Pullman in 1948 as a PRR business car

Snow clings to the hind end of a northbound Acela passing through Edison at speed. A storm over Southeastern Pennsylvania that did not reach far enough north into New Jersey is responsible for this unusual view.
Amtrak 606 is wrapped for National Geographic's Beyond King Tut "immersive experience". Here it leads a 5 minute late Northeast Regional train 149 through Edison shortly before sunset. If it passed Edison a few minutes later, it would have been bathed in shadows. If it had been on time, it would have been blocked by a Trenton-bound NJT local. Sometimes it just works out...

To apply the cliché, passengers aboard Amtrak 91 are no doubt looking forward to much warmer temperatures in Florida. The Silver Star confronts a bit of winter weather while heading south out of the New York metropolitan area. The train will be in a much warmer climate in 24 hours.

On this particular Sunday afternoon two of NJ Transit's heritage units made a round trip on the Northeast Corridor between New York Penn and Trenton in succession. First up was the Erie Lackawanna unit on train 7847. The train is seen accelerating west out of Edison station on 4 track. Following about 25 minutes behind was train 7849 with the PRR unit, also shoving. Both units would return east through here a few hours later.

Sometimes you just have to take a photo, even in less than favorable lighting conditions. In this case, the sun was almost directly in view as Amtrak 140 hustled east through Edison on 2 track behind an unusual combination of ACS-64 and P42DC. This occurred while NJT 7849 was stopped at Edison station on 4 track with The PRR heritage unit shoving. Probably not something I'll see happen again...so it was worth a shot. The PRR unit was following NJT's EL heritage unit west to Trenton. The EL had shoved through Edison about 25 minutes earlier.

The crew of Conrail ME-2 had to leave their train on the General Tire Lead in Edison, NJ for the long Christmas holiday weekend. Since this job typically serves customers along the Northeast Corridor west of Metuchen on weekday afternoons, side-lit morning photos here are not normally possible. Here we see CSXT 4408 patiently waiting for a fresh crew while a Sunday morning NJ Transit local to New York Penn Station approaches Edison station on 1 Track. A diesel-hauled Amtrak passenger train is not often seen on this section of the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak Keystone service train 649 apparently developed mechanical issues with motor 605 just east of Linden station earlier in the afternoon. After numerous attempts to resolve the issue, passengers were transferred to at least two other passing trains before a KN-701 crew arrived from Adams Yard with a rescue diesel. Once tied onto the lead cab car, Amtrak GP38H-3 525 (a former GO Transit GP40TC) led the train to Philadelphia. I'm not sure if any passengers remained on board, but it still made for an interesting sight passing through Edison over an hour and a half behind schedule.

Conrail ME-2 returns to Metuchen Yard, passing between two parking lots in Raritan Center. The crew has just completed work at Lanxess in Woodbridge and is returning with two empties bracketed by covered hoppers which it appears were being used as buffer cars. And of course "the" caboose was also along for the ride.
It was announced in March 2020 that the Raritan Central Railway will soon begin serving all customers in this area that Conrail had previously retained.
