The Hooters sind eine US-amerikanische Rockband aus P.hiladelphia, P.ennsylvania. Sie wurde 1.9.8.0 gegründet. Mit einer Mischung aus Folkrock und Rock mit Einflüssen aus Reggae und Ska konnten sie bereits in ihrer Anfangszeit lokale Erfolge verbuchen. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte die Band durch ihren Auftritt beim L.ive .Aid F.estival am 1.3. J.uli 1.9.8.5 in P.hiladelphia. Mit Songs wie All You Zombies, Johnny B. und Satellite wurden einige Chart-Platzierungen erzielt.

The Hooters wurden im Jahre 1.9.8.0 gegründet und benannten sich nach dem bandinterne Spitznamen hooter (deutsch: Hupe, Sirene) ihres Markenzeichens, der Hohner Melodica. Bazilian, Hyman und der Studiomusiker, Produzent und Songschreiber R.ick C.hertoff hatten zuvor bereits mit dem S.änger D.avid K.agan in der Band B.aby G.rand musiziert und zwei LPs auf Arista Records veröffentlicht.
The Hooters spielten ihr erstes Konzert am 4. J.uli 1.9.8.0. Sie wählten als Bandnamen den Spitznamen für die Melodica, welche von der Firma Hohner hergestellt wird. Man spielte hauptsächlich in der C.lubszene von P.hiladelphia. 1.9.8.3 veröffentlichten The Hooters ihr erstes Independent-Album Amore, welches sich mehr als 100.000 mal verkaufte. Dieses Album enthielt bereits Hits wie All You Zombies, Hanging On A Heartbeat und Fightin' On The Same Side, die in weiteren Versionen auf den folgenden Alben wieder auftauchen sollten.

Die Arbeit der Band zahlte sich aus, als Bazilian und Hyman gebeten wurden, am D.ebütalbum von C.yndi L.auper mitzuwirken. Hyman war als Co-Autor an dem Nummer-eins-Hit " Time after Time " beteiligt. Lauper bedankte sich später dafür, indem sie auf der 1.9.9.3er-Single " Boys Will Be Boys " den weiblichen Part sang.
Im Jahre 1.9.8.4 unterzeichneten " The Hooters " einen Plattenvertrag bei dem Major Label Columbia Records.

Mit Nervous Night ( 1.9.8.5) verkauften The Hooters weltweit 2.000.000 Kopien und erreichten somit Platinstatus. Das Album beinhaltete Hits wie Day By Day (USA #18), And We Danced (USA #21) und Where Do The Children Go (USA #38). Das R.olling S.tone Magazin gab ihnen den Titel Best New Band of the Year.
Im selben Jahr waren sie der Opener des L.ive A.id - K.onzerts in P.hiladelphia und tourten sehr erfolgreich durch A.ustralien. Am 2.2. N.ovember 1.9.8.5 gewannen " The Hooters " bei der 8. Billboard Annual Video Music Conference gleich zwei Preise: „Best Concert Performance“ für den Titel Where Do The Children Go und „Best Longform Program“ für das Nervous Night Home Video.
1.9.8.7 feierten " The Hooters " endlich auch ihren ersten kommerziellen Erfolg in Europa. Nachdem die Single " Satellite " aus dem Album " One Way Home " häufig im e.nglischen R.adio gespielt wurde, schaffte sie es bis auf Platz #22 der britischen Charts. Im Jahre 1.9.8.9 erfolgte ihre letzte Veröffentlichung für Columbia Records: Zig Zag, ein Album mit politisch orientierten Themen, auf dem Peter, Paul and Mary als Backgroundsänger im 1.9.6.0er-Jahre-Remake 500 Miles zu hören sind.

Mit Beginn der 1.9.9.0er Jahre begann der Erfolg von " The Hooters " in den V.ereinigten S.taaten langsam zu bröckeln, während ihre Popularität in Europa unerreichte Höhen erklomm.
1.9.9.3 veröffentlichten sie ihr Album " Out Of Body " für MCA Records. Das Album war kein großer kommerzieller Erfolg in den U.S.A, jedoch in Europa, speziell in D.eutschland und S.chweden. Die dritte Single aus diesem Album, " Private Emotion " , die später von Ricky Martin gecovert wurde, erschien auch auf deutsch (Single Heimliche Sehnsucht), wobei der deutsche Text in Zusammenarbeit mit Heinz Rudolf Kunze entstand.
" The Hooters " Live, aufgenommen an zwei Abenden im D.ezember 1.9.9.3 in B.onn und O.snabrück, wurde in Europa und A.sien 1.9.9.4 veröffentlicht, aber nicht mehr in den V.ereinigten S.taaten.
Gegen Ende des Jahres 1.9.9.5 trennte man sich, um vielfältige Soloprojekte – auch außerhalb der Musik – zu verwirklichen. Bemerkenswert ist besonders die Zusammenarbeit mit J.oan O.sborne (One of us) und R.obbie W.illiams (Old before I die). One of us wird heute auch von den Hooters selbst live gesungen, wobei auch eine deutschsprachige Version zum Repertoire gehört, die mit Hilfe der Gruppe E.rdmöbel aus K.öln entstand.

Wiedervereinigung ( 2.0.0.1 – heute )

Im N.ovember 2.0.0.1 spielte die Band beim Jubiläumskonzert für den berühmten " DJ P.ierre R.obert " aus P.hiladelphia, der Anfang der 1.9.8.0er Jahre als erster die Hooters im R.adio spielte.
Im Jahre 2.0.0.3 tourten " The Hooters " mit großem Zuspruch durch 1.7 Städte D.eutschlands. Durch diese Tour angespornt kamen sie in den beiden folgenden Jahren wieder und tourten auch durch die Schweiz und S.chweden.
Am 1.1. M.ai 2.0.0.4 bekamen " The Hooters " den Lifetime Achievement Award der P.hiladelphia Music Awards verliehen.
Im Jahre 2.0.0.7 veröffentlichten sie mit " Time Stand Still " ein neues Studioalbum. Auf diesem finden sich außer dem gewohnten Folkrock-Sound auch eine Cover-Version des D.on-H.enley-Klassikers " Boys of Summer " .
Die anschließende Tour führte sie dann durch D.eutschland, S.chweden, die N.iederlande und die Schweiz.
Im M.ai, J.uni und J.uli 2.0.0.8 fanden weitere Konzerte in N.orwegen, S.chweden, der Schweiz und vor allem in D.eutschland statt.
Seit E.nde N.ovember 2.0.0.8 ist das Doppel-Livealbum " Both Sides Live " im Store der Bandwebsite erhältlich. Die erste CD wurde bei zwei Konzerten im N.ovember 2.0.0.7 in Philadelphias Electric Factory aufgenommen. Auf der zweiten CD befinden sich Akustikversionen von zwölf Hooters-Songs, die die Band am 28. F.ebruar 2.0.0.8 und 1. M.ärz 2.0.0.8 vor kleinem Publikum in Rob Hymans Elmstreet Studios einspielte. Begleitet wurden sie hierbei auf der G.eige von G.astmusikerin A.nn - M.arie C.alhoun.

Am 9. J.uli 2.0.1.0 kam die neue EP der Hooters, Five By Five, mit fünf neuen Songs auf den Markt. Darunter auch das Stück Pissing in the Rhine, welches bis auf die Titel-Zeile komplett auf D.eutsch gesungen wird.

Mühle - Mühli Hunziken

Die Mühli Hunziken ist eine ehemalige Mühle in Rubigen bei Bern in der Schweiz, die
seit 1974 zu einem Konzertlokal umgebaut worden ist.
Aufgebaut und geführt wurde sie bis am 2.3. J.uni 2.0.1.1 durch P.eter B.urkhart oder fast
besser bekannt als " M.üli - P.esche ". Für die G.eschicke der Mühli und die Ansagen
"... no churz zum hütige Abe ... " und "Isch öper mit em Zug cho?" sind neu die Gebrüder
F.ankhauser und S.ohn T.homas B.urkhart zuständig.

Das Ambiente der Mühli ist sehr speziell, im Innern wie auch draussen hat es zahlreiche
Kunst- und Altagsgegenstände ausgestellt. Die U.hr zeigt immer fünf vor zwölf, über der
B.ühne schwebt ein S.chwein mit einer K.rone und ein F.uchs serviert eine G.ans. Von
ganz oben schaut auch E.T. den Konzerten zu und vor der Mühli sitzt J.ohn B.elushi auf
einer S.itzbank.

Die Bühne ist eher klein und man ist so sehr nahe bei den Musikern , man kann die
Konzerte aber auch von den drei oberen Stockwerken mitverfolgen wo man einen sehr
speziellen Blickwinkel auf die M.usiker hat.

Pickering Castle is situated on the southern edge of the North York Moors on a limestone bluff which formerly overlooked the meeting point of two of the main highways through the north of England: the east-west route along the Vale of Pickering and the north-south route through Newton Dale to Malton. The monument consists of a single area which includes the site of the 11th century motte and bailey castle and the 13th century shell keep castle. The former was built by William the Conqueror either during or shortly after the 'harrying of the north' in 1069-70. It consisted of an earth motte crowned by a timber palisade, flanked on the north-west side by a crescent-shaped inner bailey and, on the south-east side, by a contemporary or slightly later outer bailey. The inner bailey measured c.120m by c.35m and was bounded to the north by a steep natural slope surmounted by a palisade and to the south by deep 15m wide ditches linked to the ditch encircling the motte. The outer bailey, which measured c.185m by c.25m, was protected on the north side by these same ditches and, on the south side, by a 5-8m high palisaded bank with an outer ditch. To the immediate east of the outer bailey ditch a further earthwork bank may have provided additional defence on this side; alternatively it may be part of a medieval defence system associated with the adjacent settlement. The motte is c.20m high and has a base diameter of c.60m. It is not yet clear whether this is the original 11th century motte or a later medieval reconstruction. In the latter case, the earlier motte will have been preserved inside the later while, in addition, the buried remains of a wide range of domestic and service buildings will survive within the open areas of the baileys.
The reconstruction of the castle in stone largely took place between 1180 and 1236. There were three main phases to the work at this time, the earliest involving the late 12th century replacement of the palisade round the inner bailey with a curtain wall and also the probable construction of the first shell keep on the motte. In its present form the shell keep dates to the early 13th century but the foundations of the earlier wall will survive underneath. The remains of the early curtain wall still stand round the inner bailey, surviving best where the curtain was incorporated into later buildings. The earliest buildings so far identified are the early or mid- 12th century Old Hall, a free-standing residence whose surviving foundations show it to have been half-timbered, and the Coleman Tower, constructed at the same time as the inner curtain and an integral part of it. The Coleman Tower guarded the entry across the inner bailey ditch and was also a prison; hence its earlier name, the King's Prison. It was square in plan and had its entrance on the first floor, the level underneath being where the prisoners were kept. On the east side are the remains of a small building and also a stairway leading onto an adjacent wall. This wall, built across the motte ditch in the late 12th century, replaced an earlier palisade and provided access to the summit of the motte. A similar and contemporary length survives on the opposite side of the motte, crossing the ditch and joining the curtain alongside the later Rosamund's Tower. The keep consisted of a rubble wall enclosing a roughly circular area 20m wide. A wall walk would have lined the inside of the wall above a series of garrison buildings. The foundations of some of these buildings survive but it is not certain whether they date to the 13th or the 14th century. In some cases they will have replaced earlier timber structures whose buried remains will also survive. Also of uncertain date are the foundations of a number of buildings in the inner bailey, including a service range to the south-west and a group of buildings referred to as the Constable's Place in the accounts of the years 1441-43. The latter were half-timbered and some sections predate the inner curtain though others were clearly added later. A survey of 1537 lists a number of distinct structures, including the Constable's hall, a kitchen, buttery and pantry, and quarters for staff and servants. At the southern end of the group were a number of storage buildings, one of which is believed to have been the wool house. Two additional service buildings lay adjacent to the Old Hall and are thought, originally, to have been contemporary with it. To the south of these is the chantry-chapel which dates from c.1227 and is still complete though in a much altered state.
To the west of this is the early 14th century New Hall, initially built as a residence for Countess Alice, wife of Earl Thomas of Lancaster. This was later used as a courthouse which gave rise to it being named King's Hall or Motte (moot) Hall in later surveys. It was a penticed or lean-to building of two storeys which utilised the inner curtain for its outer wall. The inner walls were timber-framed and, as much of the surviving stonework is late 12th or early 13th century, it clearly replaced an earlier building. The upper chamber or solar of the 14th century hall was an elaborate plastered room with a decorated fireplace. The last major programme of building dates to 1324-26 when Edward II ordered extensive works to be carried out which included replacing the whole of the timber palisade round the outer bailey with a stone wall. This outer curtain included three projecting towers, a gatehouse with a drawbridge over the outer ditch and a postern gate which led from the north-east arm of the inner bailey ditch, underneath Rosamund's Tower and out onto the rampart. A second gate and drawbridge, built at this time alongside the Coleman Tower, had fallen out of use by the 16th century and can now no longer be seen. The three projecting towers, named from north-east to south-west, Rosamund's Tower, Diate Hill Tower and Mill Tower, are all square in plan and all would have led out onto the wall-walk along the inside of the curtain though, in the case of the Mill Tower, the curtain to either side has not survived sufficiently well to demonstrate this. The ground-floor entrance to the Mill Tower consisted of two doors linked by a short passage, in which the first door opened inwards and the second outwards indicating that the tower was built as a prison, a role it took over from the Coleman Tower. North of the Mill Tower, the outer curtain crossed the inner bailey ditch which can also be seen outside the castle walls on the west and north sides. This section of the ditch was part of the original 11th century defences and was quarried out of the rock on which the castle was built.
A levelled area alongside the inner edge indicates that quarrying of the rock-face continued after the ditch was cut. The quarried stone would have gone towards the construction of at least some of the castle buildings. Aside from its strategic and administrative roles, Pickering Castle had two other functions: to guard and manage the large forest which lay adjacent and to provide a court and place of detention for those found guilty of offences against it, such as poaching, unauthorised clearance and the theft of timber. The forest was an extremely important economic resource during the Middle Ages and its particular importance at Pickering can be seen in the great use made of wood in the castle buildings and also, most significantly, its continuous use in the defences down to the 14th century. Also important to the castle economy during the 14th century was the sale of wool, and it also had responsibility for managing the royal stud created by Edward II in c.1322. Possibly the stables known to have been located against the outer curtain at this time, between the gatehouse and Diate Hill tower, were connected with this. According to the Domesday Book, in 1086 the manor of Pickering was held by the king, that is, William the Conqueror. The castle established at this time as part of the subjugation of the rebellious North remained in royal hands until 1267 when it was conferred with the title Earl of Lancaster on Edmund Crouchback, younger son of Henry III. Edmund's son Thomas succeeded to both title and estates in 1296 but was executed for treason by Edward II in 1322, whereupon his estates reverted to the king. Following the unsuccessful Scottish campaign of the same year, and the ensuing retaliatory attacks on the north of England by Robert the Bruce, Edward ordered the building works noted above, clearly intending to keep Pickering a royal castle. However, in 1326 his son Edward III confirmed Henry, the younger brother of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, in his brother's titles and estates, and, in 1351, the castle became part of the Duchy of Lancaster when that title was created. Upon the elevation of the House of Lancaster to the throne in 1399, and in 1413, the succession of Henry V, the Duchy reverted to the Crown and Pickering became a royal castle once again. It has been in State care since 1926. A number of features within the protected area are excluded from the scheduling. These include the ticket office/sales point and its paved base and steps, all English Heritage fixtures and fittings such as bins, bridges, safety grilles, signs, railings and interpretation boards, the surfaces of all modern steps and paths inside and outside the castle walls, lighting and the modern walls and fences round the outside edge of the protected area but the ground beneath all these features is included.
During my recent church visits, I found some were part of the Tunstall Benefice, meaning there had to be a parent church there.
So, I investigate, and find the church on the edge of Sittingbourne.
This means it was probably an urban church, and would be locked. The sat nav said a half hour drive from Throwley, but it was a fine day, there woods were all still golden with autumns last blush of autumn; so why not?
So, we drove along many winding and twisty lanes, until we reached the outskirts of the town. From there is was urban sprawl, crossing roads leading out of the town, until, on a corner of another main road, there was the chuchyard, and church hiding behind a line of mature trees.
I park opposite, grab my cameras and walk over to the church, convinced it would be locked and the trip would have been a waste of time.
But the door to the porch was open, the church being empty, but lay's voices coming from the modern vestry to the rear.
I switch all the lights on in the church, and get down to work.
Its nice being wrong. Sometimes.

The west doorway, with an ogee-headed arch, is fourteenth century in date. It has many crockets running up the entire structure, although the finial has been lost and the string course that originally followed its outline now covers just a small piece of blank wall. The south doorway has two unusual grated ventilation openings. The nave is dignified by a hanging rood designed by Martin Travers in 1967 and may be seen against the elaborate east window of 1850, the glass of which was designed by Ward and Hughes. The south chapel, which is built of flint, was enlarged in brick in 1655 and contains some interesting monuments, most impressive of which is that to Sir Edward Hales (d. 1654). Sir Edward lies on his left side with big chubby cheeks. It is a very late date for a figure to be shown wearing plate armour.

TUNSTALL
LIES the next parish eastward from Borden. It is usually called by the common people Dunstall, a name by which it is not unfrequently described in antient deeds and writings, and which seems very expressive of its situation, dun, or dune, in the Saxon language signifying a hill, and Stealle, a place. Indeed this seems to have been its original name, and the former, by which it is described in Domesday, a mistake of the Norman scribes, who frequently, and perhaps for the purpose, mistook the pronunciation of their Saxon informers.
THE PARISH adjoins to Sittingborne northward, whence towards the south it rises to high ground, among the hills, and to a chalky barren country covered with flints, the southern and eastern boundaries extending among the woods, those in the latter being still called from the former owners, Cromer woods. It is in compass about five miles, and contains near nine hundred acres of land, of which about one hundred and forty are wood. The village, with the church. and parsonage, a small modern house, stands nearly in the centre of the parish, and near them Tunstall-house, which though not large, yet has the look of some respectability. At no great distance from the church stood the unfinished mansion of the Cromer's, erected in the beginning of king James the Ist.'s reign, as mentioned before, the materials of it were not long afterwards purchased by Sir Robert Viner, and used in the building of his house in Lombard-street, now the General Post-office, and nothing was left remaining but the foundations and vaulted cellars, which were afterwards known by the name of the Ruins, and were for many years afterwards the rendezvous of thieves and beggars, who at last became so great a nuisance to the neighbourhood, that these vaults were blown up with gunpowder, and otherwise destroyed, to prevent future resort to them. At the east end of Tunstall-green stands the house built for Sir John Hales's son during his minority, in the latter end of king Charles the Ist.'s reign. He afterwards resided in it, but after the family removed to St. Stephen's, it was left uninhabited for many years, and in the late Sir John Hales's time fell almost to ruins. It has since been repaired, and being but a mean building, is let accordingly. About half a mile southward from hence is Grove-end, the antient habitation of the Cromer's, now only a farm-house, but where the manor-court of Tunstall is still kept; and near a mile south-eastward Mr. Chambers's seat at Pistock, a neat modern built house, situated in a romantic country, almost surrounded by the woods. In the lower part of the parish near Sittingborne, is Gore-court, the house of which has been rebuilt in a costly manner by Mr. Harpur, and not far from it westward Upton manor. Almost the whole of the parish, but especially the lower part of it, must be called unhealthy, both as to air and water, and yet the number of inhabitants in the space of the last two hundred years have been nearly doubled, for in 1557 the number of households here were no more than sixteen, and the parishioners sixty; since which it appears they have so greatly increased, that in 1757 there were households twenty, and parishioners one hundred and seventy.
In 1738 several hundred broad pieces of gold were dug up in a small wood near the ruins mentioned before. They were casually discovered by a boy, but the person who gained possession of them not being able to keep the secret, he was afterwards obliged to refund six hundred and twenty four of these pieces to the crown, though Sir John Hales claimed the whole, not only as lord of the manor, but from their having been hid there by his ancestor during the civil wars, the fact of which was remembered by a person then living, together with a large quantity of jewels, which latter has been sought for, but without any success.
In the time of king Edward the Confessor, Tunstall was in the possession of Osward, a Saxon, who probably continued owner of it till the great change of property made in this kingdom by the Conqueror, who gave it, with other great estates in this county, to his half-brother, the bishop of Baieux, under the general title of whose lands it is thus entered in the survey of Domesday, taken about the 15th year of that reign:
¶In the half lath of Middeltone, in Mildetone hundred, Hugo de Port holds of the bishop (of Baieux) Tunestelle. It was taxed at three sulings and an half. The arable land is four carucates. In demesne there are two, and nine villeins, with one carucate, and nine servants. Wood for the pannage of ten hogs, and a salt-pit of twelvepence. In the time of king
TUNSTALL is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Sittingborne.
¶The church, which is dedicated to St. John Baptist, consists of three isles and a chancel, to which has been added a small chapel on the north side of it. It has a tower steeple at the west end, in which there is a peal of five bells. In the windows are several coats of arms of Cromer quartering Squerie, and impaling several matches, but most of them are much broken and defaced. In this church was the burial place of the Cromer's, as it still is of the family of Hales, and there is in it a monument and effigies for Sir James Cromer, and another costly one for Sir Edward Hales, the first baronet, anno 1654; an altar tomb of white alabaster, but without inscription, most probably for one of the Cromers; a monument with effigies for Robert Cheek, D. D. 1647, and a cenotaph with a bust, for Edward Mores, 1740, both rectors; and a monument for John Grove, esq. 1755; and there are, among others, memorials for several of the Cromers, for Margaret Rycil, 1496, and a brass plate for Sir John Guildford, 1595; and another, with his effigies in brass, for Radulf Wulf, rector, 1525.
The rectory of it was formerly an appendage to the manor, and continued so till Hubert, earl of Kent, gave it, in the reign of king Henry III. to Richard, archbishop of Canterbury, which was confirmed by king Henry III. in his 13th year. Since which it has remained, as it does at this time, part of the possessions of the archbishop of Canterbury.
In 1557 it was estimated at fourteen pounds. Parishioners sixty. Families sixteen.
It is valued in the king's books at 14l. 8s. 4d. and the yearly tenths at 1l. 8s. 10d.
In 1640 it was valued at eighty pounds. Communicants forty-eight; and in 1740 at one hundred and five pounds, then having about nine acres of glebe belonging to it.

Photo taken with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro mounted to a tripod. I also used a circular polarizing filter and a 2-Stop graduated neutral density filter. The finished image was processed from raw in Lightroom.
Stanage is the largest and most impressive of the gritstone edges
Situated on the moors north of Hathersage, and visible from miles away down in the Hope Valley, it stretches for a length of approximately 4miles from its northern tip at Stanage End to the southern point close to the Cowper Stone (near Burbage Rocks).
It is a famous location for rock-climbing and a popular spot for walkers.
Stanage's situation is high and it can be snowbound in winter.
For most of its length, it lies between the 1,300 and 1,500 ft contours. The rock face itself attains a maximum height of 85 ft, but for most of its length it is between 50 and 60 ft high.
The high point of the main edge is at High Neb (1,502 ft), which lies near the northern end.

It was quite dark in the trees and I didn't get the best picture from the moving car as we approached Huntly Castle. But with the help of Photoshop filters watercolor and poster edges, they gave definition to what we saw. A very impressive ruins! Our "Historic Scotland" passes we'd bought in Edinburgh let us into this wonderful place.
Huntly Castle: Over a period of 600 years this site saw four different castles in three slightly different locations under two different names. And between them these castles were attacked or besieged at least eight times.
In about 1180, Duncan, Earl of Fife, built the first castle here. By early 1306, John of Strathbogie, by now both Earl of Fife and Earl of Atholl, was executed by Edward I for supporting Robert the Bruce (see our Historical Timeline). The castle passed to his son, David of Strathbogie. After years of family support for Robert the Bruce, which included his using the castle as a base in 1307, David of Strathbogie chose to shift his support to the English early in 1314. This was a bad move, coming just before Robert the Bruce's final victory at Bannockburn.
In response to this Robert the Bruce, granted the castle and the lands of Strathbogie to Sir Adam Gordon of Huntly, in Berwickshire, who had shown him more consistent loyalty. This brought the Gordons to Moray, and with them the name of Huntly that was later to replace Strathbogie.
In about 1410, Sir Alexander Seton, later Lord Gordon, cleared away the 230 year old wooden castle and replaced it with a stone tower house built at the north end of the bailey. Only the thick-walled foundations of the tower house now remain, visible on the north side of the castle courtyard. The tower house would have been accompanied by a defensive wall around the bailey area, and ranges of other supporting buildings. These remain only as foundations today.
This castle was burned by the Earl of Moray in 1452, a member of the Black Douglas family and an opponent of King James II. In retaliation the Earl of Huntly (as the head of the Gordon family had become) destroyed the Black Douglas family in Moray. The damaged tower house at Strathbogie was replaced in 1460 by a much grander building on the south side of the site, where all later development was to take place. Today only the cellars under the later palace remain of the 1460 building.
In 1506, Alexander, the third Earl of Huntly, was granted a charter changing the name of the castle and surrounding area from Strathbogie to Huntly, in effect fitting the geography to his title. The castle has since been known as Huntly Castle, and the town to its south also later became known as Huntly.
By 1550 George, the 4th Earl of Huntly, was also Lord Chancellor of Scotland and one of the wealthiest men in the kingdom. He rebuilt the castle above the basement level into a grand palace, finishing the work just in time for a visit by Mary de Guise, widow of James V and mother of Mary Queen of Scots. George's strong Catholicism and political independence were later to lead to his falling out with Mary Queen of Scots. On 28 October 1562 she defeated him at the Battle of Corrichie, near Aberdeen. George was killed in the battle, Huntly Castle was looted and George's younger son was executed.
Repairs were still underway when George, the 6th Earl of Huntly, joined a plot against James VI in 1594. The King's response was to attack the castle, damaging it again and blowing up the remains of the old tower house on the north side of the enclosure. By 1599 George had made his peace with James VI and been promoted to Marquis of Huntly. His response was a further round of building work at Huntly, designed to make the 1550 palace even grander and more decorative.
The remodelling around 1600 included the remarkable fireplaces on view in the palace, one of which is dated 1606, and the decorative oriel windows and inscription on the exterior of the upper floor of the palace. The inscription reads: George Gordon First Marquis of Huntlie 16 above Henriette Stewart Marquesse of Huntlie 02.
The architectural triumph of the palace that resulted was not to be enjoyed for long. The 2nd Marquis of Huntly backed the King in the Civil War and paid for it with his life. In 1640 Huntly Castle was occupied by the Covenanting Army. In 1644 it was held for the King by the Duke of Montrose. And in 1647 it was defended by Lord Charles Gordon against General Leslie's Covenanters, but starved into submission. The defenders were all executed. In 1650, King Charles II stayed en route to his coronation as King of Scotland.
Huntly Castle last played an active role in Scottish History in 1746, when it was held by Government Troops against the Jacobites. It later became a handy quarry for those building the town of Huntly before its value as an attractive ruin was appreciated in the late 1800s. It was passed into State care in 1923, and is now looked after by Historic Scotland.

Cosy and Cool - The exterior, austere, unbroken in line, with only the row of windows flush with the walls and the double line of gold along It, gives no hint of what Iies within. It may be that the designers planned the contrast deliberately, for it is most effective. Through a flush door in the wall of blue painted steel the passenger steps into an atmosphere of comfort. The air itself is different, as indeed it should be, for the results of years of scientific and engineering experience and experiment are embodied in the air conditioning plant with which each carriage is fitted.
The floors are deep with carpeting thick piled Axmlnsters and Wiltons. Beneath tile carpet there is rubber linoleum. Beneath that again is a layer of sponge rubber; then wood fibre board; then a thick layer of cork to cover the grooved Corten steel. Then hair felt, and a sheet of aluminium. It seems as complicated a floor as ever was made; It is designed to exclude all noise, all jarring, and all vibration.
It is, In addition, an effective barrier to heat in both directions. In winter, the floor cannot become cold; in summer, it cannot become hotter than the cool conditioned air which will circulate through every part of the train. But all the passenger sees of It is the yielding carpet, edged with rubber skirtings which effectively protect the polished wood panel walls from scratches.
Walls and ceilings are Insulated similarly. Inside the shell of each carriage there is a layer of soundproof felting, cemented to the steel. Crinkled aluminium foil reduces the heat transference in the roof, and in the walls its place is taken by insulating sheets cemented to the felt The inside finish is of panels of Australian Umber in beautiful shades and figuring. Every corner Is rounded, and the joinery excites admiration for the workmen who did it.
Seats are upholstered In chrome leather to harmonise with the carpets, and there Is a pleasing variety
throughout the train. In the first class non-smoking compartments the leather of the seats is dark blue, the carpet is dark brown Saxony Wilton, and the walls are of Queensland ribbon walnut.The ladies'
compartments have light grey chrome leather seats, pastel green carpet, and panels of Queensland Royal walnut. The scheme for the smoking compartment includes Queensland flowery walnut and West Australian jarrah, rich plum red leather and a carpet of dark blue.
The materials and construction of the second class compartments are identical with those of the first class, except that the colourings are different. The only significant difference between the accommodation In the two classes is that four persons will sit on each side of the second class compartment, with folding arm-rests dividing the seats into two sections, while in the first class the same space will be occupied by only three passengers on each side, with a folding armrest on each side of each passenger.
Luggage racks have rubber-covered front bars to prevent luggage from slipping, and chromium-plated fillets against the wall piotect the woodwork from scratching and enhance the appearance of the interior decoration.
The windows are large and wide, framing the scene without. They are double to prevent the conduction of heat, and they are of unshatterable glass affording complete protection in any emergency . Each compartment has its card table stored under the seat in a little locker and the fronts of the seats come straight down to the floor, leaving no harbour for rubbish.

Christmas Day 2011. An hour and a quarter before sunset. I knew the compositions I wanted but it was ridiculously difficult to get the shots due to the extreme winds. It was a case of dash in, grab the shot and then get blown back away from the edge. High ISO and lots of sharpening.

Collecting these yearly images – essentially the planetary version of annual school picture days for children – will help current and future scientists see how these giant worlds change over time. The observations are designed to capture a broad range of features, including winds, clouds, storms and atmospheric chemistry.
Already, the Jupiter images have revealed a rare wave just north of the planet’s equator and a unique filamentary feature in the core of the Great Red Spot not seen previously.
“Every time we look at Jupiter, we get tantalizing hints that something really exciting is going on,” said Amy Simon, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “This time is no exception.”
Simon and her colleagues produced two global maps of Jupiter from observations made using Hubble’s high-performance Wide Field Camera 3. The two maps represent nearly back-to-back rotations of the planet, making it possible to determine the speeds of Jupiter’s winds. The findings are described in an Astrophysical Journal paper, available online.
The new images confirm that the Great Red Spot continues to shrink and become more circular, as it has been doing for years. The long axis of this characteristic storm is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) shorter now than it was in 2014. Recently, the storm had been shrinking at a faster-than-usual rate, but the latest change is consistent with the long-term trend.
The Great Red Spot remains more orange than red these days, and its core, which typically has more intense color, is less distinct than it used to be. An unusual wispy filament is seen, spanning almost the entire width of the vortex. This filamentary streamer rotates and twists throughout the 10-hour span of the Great Red Spot image sequence, getting distorted by winds blowing at 330 miles per hour (150 meters per second) or even greater speeds.
In Jupiter’s North Equatorial Belt, the researchers found an elusive wave that had been spotted on the planet only once before, decades earlier, by Voyager 2. In those images, the wave is barely visible, and nothing like it was seen again, until the current wave was found traveling at about 16 degrees north latitude, in a region dotted with cyclones and anticyclones. Similar waves – called baroclinic waves – sometimes appear in Earth’s atmosphere where cyclones are forming.
“Until now, we thought the wave seen by Voyager 2 might have been a fluke,” said co-author Glenn Orton of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. “As it turns out, it’s just rare!”
The wave may originate in a clear layer beneath the clouds, only becoming visible when it propagates up into the cloud deck, according to the researchers. That idea is supported by the spacing between the wave crests.
In addition to Jupiter, the researchers have observed Neptune and Uranus, and maps of those planets also will be placed in the public archive. Saturn will be added to the series later. Hubble will dedicate time each year to this special set of observations, called the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy program.
“The long-term value of the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy program is really exciting,” said co-author Michael H. Wong of the University of California, Berkeley. “The collection of maps that we will build up over time will not only help scientists understand the atmospheres of our giant planets, but also the atmospheres of planets being discovered around other stars, and Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, too.”
