Mallerstang Edge is the name applied to the broken line of cliffs that tower above Mallerstang Dale, the upper valley of the River Eden. The cliffs are located on the east side of the valley and form a long scar on the ridge of high ground that runs southwards from High Seat (2,326 feet) (www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8686405348/). This ridge defines the boundary between North Yorkshire and Cumbria and it lies on the main east-west watershed of England. Three major rivers have their origins on the upper slopes of the ridge: the River Swale, the River Ure and the River Eden. The Swale and the Ure merge together and flow south-eastwards to eventually drain into the North Sea at the Humber estuary. The River Eden, on the other hand, flows north-westwards to the Irish Sea at Carlisle (“Luguvalos’ Fortified Town”).

Passing beneath Mallerstang Edge is the line of an unpaved Roman road that once ran through Mallerstang Dale and connected the fort at Bainbridge (“Bridge over the River Bain”) with that at Brough (“Stronghold” or “Fortification”). In 1927 a local shepherd discovered a hoard of Roman coins near this road and his findings are currently on display at Tullie House Museum in Carlisle. Much older flint implements have also been found near the road, prompting speculation that it may date back much further than Roman times. After the Romans withdrew their legions from this island it is said that Uther Pendragon, the father of King Arthur, built a castle in the valley to resist the Saxons invaders. It is claimed that the castle stood on the site now occupied by Pendragon Castle (www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8670050164/in/photostr...), a more recent fortification built during the late 12th century by Sir Hugh de Morville, the Lord of Westmorland. It was the Vikings, however, who were to emerge as the dominant force in this part of the country before the Norman Conquest. They settled the valley at the beginning of the last millennium and the evidence of their occupation still remains in the many place names hereabouts that are Nordic in origin. “Mallerstang” is in fact thought to be derived from a combination of two languages: the Celtic word “moel bryn”, meaning “bare hill”, and the Old Norse word “stong”, meaning a “landmark”. The old Roman road that passes under Mallerstang Edge was improved in later years and used as a coach road. It became known as “Lady Anne’s High Way”, after Lady Anne Clifford, a wealthy local heiress who lived during the 17th century. The modern motor road through the valley was only constructed as recently as 1825 and the Settle-Carlisle railway was laid down during the 1870s. The summit of the railway lies on Aisgill Moor at the head of Mallerstang Dale and at 1,169 feet this is the highest point reached by any main-line train in England. The 25 navvies and their families who died during construction of the Mallerstang section of the railway are buried in unmarked graves at St Mary’s Church (www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8680798136/in/photostr...) in Outhgill (“Desolate Ravine”). A monument to them, that also marks the area where they are buried, was erected in 1997.

Merseybus Atlantean 1024 heads up Edge Lane en route to Liverpool city centre in the summer of 1994. Behind the bus, largely hidden by greenery is the former Liverpool Corporation Edge Lane works, which at this time was still open and dealing with the influx of Leyland Titans that were entering service from London. No doubt this bus would have passed through the works at some point in its career, as unusually for this period, Merseybus still utilised a central works for repaints and mechanical work deemed to heavy to be carried out at depot level.

Today the area is undergoing a major regeneration. The works have gone, as have Merseybus and the Atlanteans with services now in the hands of Arriva.
