The **Cabañeros National Park**, located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo, is one of the most valuable protected areas on the Iberian Peninsula. It is often called the "Spanish Serengeti" due to its vast stretches of open plains ("rañas") combined with the Mediterranean forest of the Montes de Toledo.

### Main Features

* **Landscape and Ecosystems:** The park is mainly divided into two areas: the **raña**, a large treeless plain that offers spectacular scenery—especially at sunset—and the **mountain ranges (sierras)**, which are covered in dense Mediterranean forest and scrubland.

* **Wildlife:** A true ecological paradise. It is famous for its large population of **red deer** (whose mating season, the *berrea* or deer rut, attracts thousands of visitors in autumn), as well as roe deer and wild boars.

* **Birdwatching Paradise:** This is a vital area for the conservation of large birds. It is an excellent spot to observe the **cinereous vulture (black vulture)**, the **Iberian imperial eagle**, the **black-winged kite**, the **black stork**, and various raptors such as the red kite or the Montagu's harrier.

1. **Hiking Trails:** There are numerous free, self-guided trails (such as the Boquerón del Estena route, the Rocigalgo Massif, or the Plaza de los Moros) that allow you to explore the forests and riverbanks.

2. **4x4 Guided Tours:** To visit the restricted interior area of the *raña*, guided tours in all-terrain vehicles are available. This is the best option for up-close wildlife viewing and panoramic vistas of the vast plains.

3. **Visitor Centers:** The park features several interpretation centers (such as the one in Horcajo de los Montes or "Casa de Palillos" in Alcoba de los Montes), which are perfect for learning about the local geology, flora, and fauna before hitting the trails.

Golden-throated Barbet

The golden-throated barbet (Psilopogon franklinii) is an Asian barbet native to Southeast Asia, where it inhabits foremost forests between 900 and 2,700 m (3,000 and 8,900 ft) altitude. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List because of its wide distribution and stable population.

The golden-throated barbet is vivid green above with paler yellowish-green plumage below, deep blue wings and verditer underneath the tail. Its bill is dusky black, and it is black around the eyes. Its forehead is crimson and its throat orange. Its legs are greenish.

The golden-throated barbet is resident in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and mainland China. Its presence in Bangladesh is uncertain. It inhabits tropical and subtropical moist forests at elevations of 900 to 2,700 m (3,000 to 8,900 ft). The male's territorial call is a very loud pukwowk.

Status

Summer visitor from March to September to all Irish coasts. Winters off south Africa and as far south as Antarctica.

Identification

Usually seen over the sea. Slender seabird with narrow, pointed wings, long forked tail and long, pointed bill. Grey above and white below, dark cap to head. Flight light and buoyant, can hover briefly over the sea before diving in. Very similar to Common Tern (with which it breeds) and told apart by plumage and structure. Arctic tern is smaller, with a smaller head, neck and bill and slightly narrower wings, which look forwardly placed on the body. Very short legs. Adults have a blood red bill, usually with no dark tip. The underparts are greyer than Common Tern and there some contrast with the cheek. The wing pattern is useful in separation, Arctic terns shows no dark wedge in the primaries but shows a distinct trailing edge. Arctic terns have longer tail steamers, extending beyond the wing tips. Adult winter plumage, like all terns is different from breeding plumage, but is only seen in the wintering range. Also has distinctive juvenile plumage, with some brown in the mantle, a dark carpel bar and white secondaries. Shows a distinct trailing bar to the primaries, bill darkens rapidly.

Marine fish, crustaceans and insects.

Breeding

Mainly a coastal breeding bird, but in Ireland the species also breeds inland on the fresh water lakes of Lough Corrib (Co. Galway) and Lough Conn (Co. Mayo). More colonies are found on the west coast with Co. Wexford, Co. Kerry, Co. Mayo and Co. Donegal having the largest number of birds

Wintering

Considered to have the longest migration of all birds, utilizing the summer of both hemispheres.

Monitored by

All-Ireland tern survey in 1995, and through breeding seabird surveys carried out every 15-20 years. Arctic Terns are also monitored annually at Rockabill and Lady’s Island Lake.

The Old World flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae, of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which, as the name implies, take their prey on the wing. The family includes 324 species and is divided into 51 genera.

A majestic antelope pauses for a drink at a quiet waterhole in Namibia's wild expanse. Captured in perfect light, this image reflects the tranquil essence of African wildlife.

A capture of two Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus) navigating their approach to a cliffside nesting colony. Hopefully, the composition beautifully highlights their impressive wingspans, distinctive yellowish heads, and stark black wingtips against the soft, muted backdrop of the sea. Below them, a vibrant carpet of pink Sea Campion flowers adds a gorgeous pop of colour, perfectly framing this dynamic wildlife moment.

I was shooting in Cornwall, near St Michael's mount... A Jewel of the Wildflower Meadow

Peregrine Falcon: a masterpiece of natural engineering The fastest animal on the planet, built like a jet fighter and just as manoeuvrable, the majestic Peregrine Falcon is perhaps the ultimate predator. Their eyesight is amongst the keenest in the natural world, and they have the distinction of being the most widely distributed bird species on Earth, found on every continent except Antarctica. They favour cliff ledges and even high buildings for nesting, but range widely in search of food. They have a very powerful and rapid flight, but it is their astonishing ‘stoop’ for which they are most renowned. They hunt other birds and, once a target has been spotted, they climb high above it, sometimes using the sun as a shield, then flap powerfully into a nosedive and plummet towards it. They can reach speeds well in excess of 300 km/h, giving their unsuspecting prey little chance: a true masterpiece of natural engineering. Females are usually larger than males, but both sexes are very similar in appearance, being dark blue-grey above and dark-barred white below. They have distinctive dark patches extending below their eyes, contrasting with their white cheeks and giving them a hooded appearance. These ‘moustachial stripes’ are present to varying degrees on many falcon species, and are believed to reduce the sun’s glare by preventing light from reflecting into their eyes. The world almost lost its Peregrine Falcons forever, due to the ravages of a notorious pesticide called DDT, which entered their food chain. This chemical weakened the falcons’ eggshells and meant that their eggs usually broke during laying or incubation.
