Basking in the golden glow of the Namibian sun, these ancient rock formations stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Weathered by wind and shaped by nature’s hand, they create a surreal landscape where the beauty of the desert meets the ruggedness of the wilderness.

From our Arizona Monsoon trip. These guys are loud and fairly easy to find, but difficult to get on a clean perch down low with a good background. This one took a lot of work.

I was filming in Southern India... it was getting dark and we were heading back to camp when three elephants blocked the road. Rather than startle them we switched off the engine and waited... they slowly moved in our direction, lazily browsing on the vegetation as they came closer and closer. They were either oblivious to our presence or considered us of no threat - we knew that this mutual understanding could all change in the blink of an eye. The tiny calf was sandwiched between the colossal flanks of the two adults and it seemed pretty carefree as it swung its trunk around, occasionally resting its head against the side of one of its guardians. It was a real privilege to see such intimacy. As they exchanged caresses, their trunks touching and stroking each other. We were lost in the moment. #EarthOnLocation #BBCEarth #EarthCapture #Elephant #India #Baby #Wildlife

Sand Martins are the smallest European hirundines (the collective name for martins and swallows). They have dark brown upper parts and dark under wings, contrasting with pale under parts divided by a distinctive dark chest stripe. They are agile fliers, feeding mainly over water. Look out for them perching on overhead wires or branches. They are sociable in the breeding season and winter. During the past 50 years the European population has crashed on two occasions as a result of drought in the birds' African wintering grounds.

Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker

The Japanese pygmy woodpecker or pygmy woodpecker (Yungipicus kizuki) is a species of woodpecker. It is found in coniferous and deciduous forests in Russia, China, North Korea, South Korea and Japan. This species has also been placed in the genus Dendrocopos or Picoides. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assessed it as a least-concern species.

This woodpecker is found in Korea, northeastern China, southeastern Siberia, Sakhalin, Japan and the Ryukyu Islands. It occurs up to 2,100 m (6,900 ft) in elevation, and its habitat consists of many types of coniferous and deciduous forests, including lowland, upland and riverine forests, and also parks and gardens.

The Japanese pygmy woodpecker occurs in pairs and mixed-species foraging flocks, eating invertebrates and berries. Its calls are khit and kzz notes, and it drums weakly in short bursts. Breeding starts in March in southern Japan and in late May in northern Japan. A nest hole is excavated in a dead branch. The eggs are white, measuring about 19 mm (0.75 in) by 15 mm (0.59 in). Five to seven white eggs are laid and then incubated for 12 to 14 days. Fledgling occurs after three weeks.

Swan Lake

Like much of Japan, Hokkaido is seismically active. Consequently, hot springs and volcanic vents can be found all across the island. Lake Kussharo, an inland lake in the western region of Hokkaido, is a caldera lake, a remnant of a long-ago erupted volcano. It is the largest of three caldera lakes that make up Akan National Park. And as with most geographic names in Hokkaido, the lake derives its name from the Ainu and the Ainu word “Kuccharo,” means “The place where a lake becomes a river.”

Its violent, seismic past is evident even today, with natural hot springs bubbling up along its shoreline, heating both the water and gravelly shores. It is here where the Whooper Swans gather to find refuge from Hokkaido’s brutally cold winters.

Amidst the dynamic ecosystem of Lagos Yaguacaca, the Great Egret (Ardea alba) stands as a beacon of tranquility. This photograph captures the bird in its poised vigilance, a sentinel in the marshes. The egret's stark white plumage, set against the dense greenery of Leticia, Colombia, illustrates the bird's adaptation to its wetland habitat. The striking yellow beak, a sliver of color, punctuates the scene, drawing the viewer's eye to the bird's elegant profile.

In this frame, my focus was on isolating the egret's form to emphasize its role within the ecosystem. It's a moment that speaks to the egret's solitary nature and its prowess as a hunter. The composition is a deliberate balance of color and space, inviting contemplation on the simplicity and complexity of nature. As a conservation photographer, these are the instances I seek to share, hoping to bridge the distance between our human experience and the natural world.

The dancing tanchōzuru:

With wings slightly raised and heads held high, a pair of red-crowned cranes begin to march, their broad, three-toed feet puncturing the snow as they trumpet loudly and steam rises from their beaks. The male calls first, followed closely by the female—several notes in quick succession, strengthening their bond. But this vocal parade is just the prelude.

Now the pair begin to dance, bowing heads, flapping wings, leaping up and down and spinning around, sometimes picking up sticks and leaves and tossing them in the air. Their momentum triggers other couples to do the same, then the juveniles join in, until the whole flock is in motion—mesmerising flashes of red, black and white, flickering across the snowfields. It’s a sight worth going a long way to see.

The Siberian Rubythroat adult male in breeding plumage has olive-brown upperparts from crown to tail. The greater wing- coverts are tipped buff, forming a narrow wingbar. The primaries are edged cinnamon.

On the underparts, chin and throat are red. Upper breast and sides of lower throat are brownish-grey, whereas centre of breast, belly and undertail-coverts are whitish. The flanks are washed olive-buff.

On the head, the crown is olive-brown. Eyebrow and malar stripe are white and lores are black. The malar stripe is bordered with black.

The bill is blackish with paler base of lower mandible. The eyes are dark brown. Legs and feet are greyish-pink.

The Siberian Rubythroat feeds primarily on insects and larvae including ants, wasps, beetles, mosquitoes, bugs and spiders. It also consumes aquatic prey such as molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic insects caught along the seashore on passage during migration.

A majestic rhino bathed in the golden hues of the African sun, walking across the rugged terrain of Namibia. This powerful creature embodies resilience and the raw beauty of the wilderness. As one of Earth's most endangered species, it stands as a symbol of strength and the urgent need for conservation.

Peregrine Falcon: a masterpiece of natural engineering The fastest animal on the planet, built like a jet fighter and just as manoeuvrable, the majestic Peregrine Falcon is perhaps the ultimate predator. Their eyesight is amongst the keenest in the natural world, and they have the distinction of being the most widely distributed bird species on Earth, found on every continent except Antarctica. They favour cliff ledges and even high buildings for nesting, but range widely in search of food. They have a very powerful and rapid flight, but it is their astonishing ‘stoop’ for which they are most renowned. They hunt other birds and, once a target has been spotted, they climb high above it, sometimes using the sun as a shield, then flap powerfully into a nosedive and plummet towards it. They can reach speeds well in excess of 300 km/h, giving their unsuspecting prey little chance: a true masterpiece of natural engineering. Females are usually larger than males, but both sexes are very similar in appearance, being dark blue-grey above and dark-barred white below. They have distinctive dark patches extending below their eyes, contrasting with their white cheeks and giving them a hooded appearance. These ‘moustachial stripes’ are present to varying degrees on many falcon species, and are believed to reduce the sun’s glare by preventing light from reflecting into their eyes. The world almost lost its Peregrine Falcons forever, due to the ravages of a notorious pesticide called DDT, which entered their food chain. This chemical weakened the falcons’ eggshells and meant that their eggs usually broke during laying or incubation. Thankfully this substance was banned in many countries, including Ireland, in the nick of time, and the species has slowly but surely recovered. birdwatchireland.ie/birds/peregrine

A breathtaking view of Namibia’s timeless rock formations beneath a sky painted with delicate clouds. This stunning landscape tells a story of resilience, sculpted by the forces of nature over millennia. A glimpse into the raw beauty of Africa’s wilderness.

Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) males weigh 20–57 kg and females are lighter, weighing 20–33 kg or 27 kg on an average. The long, ringed horns, 35–75 cm long, are generally present only on males, though females may develop horns as well. The white fur on the chin and around the eyes is in sharp contrast with the black stripes on the face. The coat of males shows two-tone colouration: while the upper parts and outsides of the legs are dark brown to black, the underparts and the insides of the legs are all white. On the other hand, females and juveniles are yellowish fawn to tan.

The Asian openbill or Asian openbill stork is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. This distinctive stork is found mainly in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is greyish or white with glossy black wings and tail and the adults have a gap between the arched upper mandible and recurved lower mandible. Young birds are born without this gap which is thought to be an adaptation that aids in the handling of snails, their main prey
