As the sun began to set over the Peruain Amazon, this pair of Lineated Woodpeckers landed on this eposed dead tree, setting up the perfect shot I'd been eyeing this dead tree for a few days, and after all the students had left, I had the opportunity to sit and wait for the woodpeckers to come so I could make this image.

A charming image of a Namibian ground squirrel standing upright while nibbling on fresh grass. Captured in the arid landscapes of Namibia, this delightful moment showcases the resilience and beauty of small wildlife.
The **Cabañeros National Park**, located between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo, is one of the most valuable protected areas on the Iberian Peninsula. It is often called the "Spanish Serengeti" due to its vast stretches of open plains ("rañas") combined with the Mediterranean forest of the Montes de Toledo.
### Main Features
* **Landscape and Ecosystems:** The park is mainly divided into two areas: the **raña**, a large treeless plain that offers spectacular scenery—especially at sunset—and the **mountain ranges (sierras)**, which are covered in dense Mediterranean forest and scrubland.
* **Wildlife:** A true ecological paradise. It is famous for its large population of **red deer** (whose mating season, the *berrea* or deer rut, attracts thousands of visitors in autumn), as well as roe deer and wild boars.
* **Birdwatching Paradise:** This is a vital area for the conservation of large birds. It is an excellent spot to observe the **cinereous vulture (black vulture)**, the **Iberian imperial eagle**, the **black-winged kite**, the **black stork**, and various raptors such as the red kite or the Montagu's harrier.
### Activities
1. **Hiking Trails:** There are numerous free, self-guided trails (such as the Boquerón del Estena route, the Rocigalgo Massif, or the Plaza de los Moros) that allow you to explore the forests and riverbanks.
2. **4x4 Guided Tours:** To visit the restricted interior area of the *raña*, guided tours in all-terrain vehicles are available. This is the best option for up-close wildlife viewing and panoramic vistas of the vast plains.
3. **Visitor Centers:** The park features several interpretation centers (such as the one in Horcajo de los Montes or "Casa de Palillos" in Alcoba de los Montes), which are perfect for learning about the local geology, flora, and fauna before hitting the trails.
This was one of two common Oriole species seen around feeding stations in Costa Rica. The other was . . . Baltimore Oriole. Those are the same birds that live around our houses out East but simply on winter territory. It was strange to see.

Amandava amandava
The red avadavat (Amandava amandava), red munia or strawberry finch, is a sparrow-sized bird of the family Estrildidae. It is found in the open fields and grasslands of tropical Asia and is popular as a cage bird due to the colourful plumage of the males in their breeding season. It breeds in the Indian Subcontinent in the monsoon season. The species name of amandava and the common name of avadavat are derived from the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, from where these birds were exported into the pet trade in former times. This small finch is easily identified by the rounded black tail and the bill that is seasonally red. The rump is red and the breeding male is red on most of the upper parts except for a black eye-stripe, lower belly and wings. There are white spots on the red body and wing feathers. The non-breeding male is duller but has the red-rump while the female is duller with less of the white spotting on the feathers.

Plumbeous Water Redstart (Female)
The plumbeous water redstart (Phoenicurus fuliginosus) is a passerine bird in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. It is found in South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. Males are slate blue in colour, while females are grey. The bird's common name refers to its colour which resembles lead. They tend to live near fast-moving streams and rivers.
The plumbeous water redstart is typically 14 centimetres (5.5 in) long in total, with an average weight of 22 grams (0.78 oz) for males and 18.8 grams (0.66 oz) for females. The male birds are slate blue in colour with a tail that is rusty red. On the other hand, female birds are pale grey and feature a white rump.
The bird is found in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Their preferred habitats are streams, nullahs and rivers with boulders that are shaded, as well as vegetation near riverbanks. Streams with higher populations of insects such as mayflies appear to be preferred.
They are typically found at relatively high elevations, with the ones living in the Himalayas seen between 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) and 4,100 metres (13,500 ft). However, they tend to descend to lower altitudes during the winter.
The plumbeous water redstart has been placed on the Least Concern category of the IUCN Red List, as the population has remained stable throughout the last ten years. The size of its distribution range is over 5,100,000 square kilometres (2,000,000 sq mi).
The plumbeous water redstart is very protective of its habitat and will be extremely confrontational to any trespasser on its territory. In order to catch flies in rivers, it flies vertically until it is at least 20 feet (6.1 m) above the water, before gliding down in a spiral back to the same place.
Captured in the heart of Namibia’s Namib Desert, this breathtaking dune in Sossusvlei glows with warm hues under the rising sun. The interplay of light and shadow creates a dramatic contrast, showcasing the raw beauty of one of the world’s oldest deserts. A mesmerizing landscape of solitude, timelessness, and nature’s artistry.

The Siberian Rubythroat adult male in breeding plumage has olive-brown upperparts from crown to tail. The greater wing- coverts are tipped buff, forming a narrow wingbar. The primaries are edged cinnamon.
On the underparts, chin and throat are red. Upper breast and sides of lower throat are brownish-grey, whereas centre of breast, belly and undertail-coverts are whitish. The flanks are washed olive-buff.
On the head, the crown is olive-brown. Eyebrow and malar stripe are white and lores are black. The malar stripe is bordered with black.
The bill is blackish with paler base of lower mandible. The eyes are dark brown. Legs and feet are greyish-pink.
The Siberian Rubythroat feeds primarily on insects and larvae including ants, wasps, beetles, mosquitoes, bugs and spiders. It also consumes aquatic prey such as molluscs, crustaceans and aquatic insects caught along the seashore on passage during migration.

Himantopus himantopus
The black-winged stilt is a black and white wading bird with incredibly long legs. They live in a variety of wetlands, from marshes to coastal lagoons. They wade through the water, plucking insects from the surface. Their incredibly long legs (around 60% of their height) allow them to walk through deeper water than other wading birds.
It has black on the back of the neck, a white collar and a red iris. Both sexes are similar, and the plumage does not change during the year. Black-winged Stilts give a repeated high-pitched barking call. Young Black-winged Stilts lack black on the back of the neck and have grey-brown wings and back, speckled with white. They have a smudged grey crown, which extends down the back of the neck as the birds get older.
Appearances can be deceiving, even in the world of butterflies. The colours and patterns on their wings play an important role in protection from predators. For example, Owl Butterflies use a combination of cryptic patterns and colours not only for camouflage, but to cleverly disguise themselves by mimicking the intimidating appearance of some venomous snakes. The disguise is further enhanced by the way the butterfly positions itself when resting. Such disguises may be so effective that it is enough to deter predators from risking an encounter with another animal they perceive to be dangerous.

I was filming in Southern India... it was getting dark and we were heading back to camp when three elephants blocked the road. Rather than startle them we switched off the engine and waited... they slowly moved in our direction, lazily browsing on the vegetation as they came closer and closer. They were either oblivious to our presence or considered us of no threat - we knew that this mutual understanding could all change in the blink of an eye. The tiny calf was sandwiched between the colossal flanks of the two adults and it seemed pretty carefree as it swung its trunk around, occasionally resting its head against the side of one of its guardians. It was a real privilege to see such intimacy. As they exchanged caresses, their trunks touching and stroking each other. We were lost in the moment. #EarthOnLocation #BBCEarth #EarthCapture #Elephant #India #Baby #Wildlife
